April -- Tuesdays
CC * 14 * MD * 6 PM * Capital Crescent Trail (CCT)
Bethesda to Georgetown and Back . Looking for a relaxed, social midweek ride? If so come join us for the first of this year's rides from Bethesda to Georgetown and back on the Capital Crescent Trail. We go to dinner afterwards at a moderately priced Bethesda restaurant. In April the ride leaves promptly at 6 PM from the far corner of the parking lot at Woodmont and Bethesda Aves. Bring quarters!! The meter maids are out until 10 PM. No go if it's raining, pavement is wet or storms are seriously threatening. Helmets required. Patrice Coss 703/521-6159.
CC/B/BB * 22 * VA * 6 PM * Cameron Run Regional Park, Alexandria
Tuesday Night Ride . The route loops through Alexandria and around Lake Barcroft over flat, rolling, and hilly terrain. All levels of riders are welcome to join us and set your own pace. We'll ride unless it's raining at start time. (Directions from the Beltway in Virginia : Take Exit 174 to the Eisenhower Ave Connector. R on Eisenhower Ave @ TL. L into Cameron Run Park after 0.5 mile.) Please bring your helmets. Cynthia Priddy [diamrem<>aol.com] W: 703/926-2899 or 703/501-8525.
B/A/AA * 20-30 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park
Downtown Breakaway . Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark. Ride leaves promptly from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. Ride leaders of various speeds will be ready to lead each week according to availability. If you'd like to help lead, please contact one of the leaders. Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] C:301/367-2430, Jonathan Mirsky [mirsky2207@hotmail.com] C:202/320-1310; Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] C: 860/869-7610; Brian Freburger [freburgerbe@cox.net] C 703/508-0282.
B/BB(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead "A" ride below. Ride leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the "A" riders. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). Early April is a special treat: big old cherry trees decorate part of the route! Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
A/AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3 mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). The plan is that the main group departs at 6:10 PM promptly, as any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (E.g., a 6:30 departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
April -- Wednesdays
B/BB/A * 20-30 * MD * 6 PM * Ivy Lane Office Complex (IVY)
Midweek Madcap . Wow - it's already that time of year again!! Come out and enjoy a mid week ride through the Ag Center and Old Town Bowie. Terrain is flat to rolling. There will be several routes to choose from with no rest stops. Choose the ride/mileage that will ensure that you get back to the ride start before it gets dark. No go in rain/wet roads. Note: The ride start time for April is 6 PM with it changing to 6:30 in May. Jeanette and Jay Howard [Tucohoward@comcast.net] 240/271-7001.
April -- Thursdays
C/CC * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Spring is back ! So is the Tenley Circle ride. Meet the regular group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma street, starting on April 12th, and every Thursday after that till the end of September. Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! No go if raining or wet roads. Let's get the season started! Reggie Beard 240/899-2391 or Steve Brickell 301/946-2520.
B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] and Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -– with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. This ride will start at 6 PM in April and move to 6:30 in May. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
April -- Fridays
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60s. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49ø. If colder but sunny and calm please call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or C: 202/997-2376 George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
April 1 Sunday
TANDEM * 8-38 * MD * 10 AM * Mt Airy
Mt Airy Spring Demo Day . No Fooling, skip breakfast, come out and play - we'll have the juice, java, bagels and fresh pastries ready. Our later 10 AM start time will give you time to grab helmets and shoes. Rides from the family-friendly 8 miles to the more challenging 38. After the ride try out some of the new tandems, recumbents and singles, plus other interesting two and three wheel toys. New-to, or wannabes get first-hand tips from the seasoned devotees. After the rides find out more about the club over a healthy catered lunch, courtesy of long time CRAB-ers Larry and Linda Black, tandemming since the days of the 10 speed in the 70s. Got old gear? Swap with fellow club folk - no fees. Maybe even score a great tandem. There will be a bunch of tandems, recumbents, trikes, and other toys to try out all day. (Directions: From I-270, Exit 16 (Md 27 - Father Hurley Blvd) East approx 13 miles to MD 144 (Old National Pike), Right at Shell gas station and go 1/2 mi to Mt Airy Bicycles, 4540 Old National Pike.) More info atwww.bike123.com. Team Black [info@bike123.com] 301/831-5151.
D * 19 * MD * 10:30 AM * Pierce Mill (PIM)
Cherry Blossom #1 . This is the first of two Sunday rides to take in the Cherry Blossoms in the Washington area. The cherry blossoms should appear first by the Jefferson Memorial. We'll meander through downtown and try to avoid the crowds, if possible. We'll stop somewhere (maybe the Watergate) to buy a take-out lunch and then find a spot to view the blossoms. Bill Michie C: 301/828-5818.
C(MF) * 30-35 * VA * 9:30 AM * Nokesville Community Park (NCP) * 45°
April Fools' Day Ride and Tailgate . On this date 10 years ago John Zebatto and Butch Counts founded the Nokesville Picnic Ride. The joke was on them as the weather was cold, over cast and only 20 riders showed up. The grills were used for heat!! Lets hope we get a nice sunny day this time. Route is flat to gently rolling. Joint ride with "B" and "CC" groups. Tailgate afterwards so bring a light dish to share (fruit, salad, cookies, chips, salsa, etc.) Butch will bring a 5 gallon bucket of his famous pasta salad. Other ride leaders will provide picnic supplies. Questions about ride or weather contact ride leader. Teresa Brooks [tacbrooks@cox.net] 703/971-3617 or 703/728-7635.
CC * 35-44 * VA * 9:30 AM * Nokesville Community Park (NCP)
Nokesville Picnic Ride Redux . Loops will be the same as used for the popular Nokesville Picnic Ride that will be held in May. Terrain is flat to gently rolling. Rest stop in Bristerburg with bathroom facilities then the familiar return through Catlett and a few rollers leading into Nokesville. Tailgate afterwards with B riders. So bring a light dish to share: fruit, cookies, chips, etc. Leaders will bring pasta salad as well as plates, napkins and utensils. Questions on weather or anything else about the ride, contact the ride leaders. Catherine Kitchell [ckitchell@earthlink.net] C: 703/599-4228 (day of ride only, please) and Debbie Reynolds 703/360-2339.
CC * 37 * MD * 10 AM * Poolesville HS (POO) * 40°

B * 44 * VA * 9:30 AM * Nokesville Community park (NCP)
April Fools' Day Ride and Tailgate . On this date 10 years ago John Zebatto and I founded the Nokesville Picnic Ride. The joke was on us as the weather was cold, over cast and about 20 riders from all classes showed up. We lit the grills for heat!! Lets hope we get a nice sunny day for this pre-ride of next months picnic. Route is flat to gently rolling with the familiar rest stop in Bristerburg. Joint ride with "CC" group. Tailgate afterwards so bring a light dish to share (fruit, cookies, chips, salsa ,etc.) Butch will bring a 5 gallon bucket of his famous pasta salad. Leaders will provide picnic supplies. Questions about ride or weather contact ride leaders:
Butch Counts [eacounts2@yahoo.com] 301/871-6232 and Melinda Simons [melindasimons@yahoo.com] 703/892-4928.
B * 50ish * MD * 9 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)
April Fool's Surprise . The surprise will be what cue sheet I will pick. Distance will depend on the weather. Don't be a fool and not show up. No go in rain. Kirk Walder [kirkwalder at comcast.net] 301/210-5914.
BB(MH) * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Damascus HS (DAM)
The "Hey, Mr. DJ" Ride . That's the song you'll be humming on this somewhat hilly ride on the upper Montgomery County/lower Frederick County roads. I've been working on this route throughout the winter; I think you'll enjoy some of the "new roads" that are seldom thought about and off the PP radar screen. Don't let the low mileage concern you. There are some pretty good climbs on this route that will keep the ride interesting and challenging. If the temperatures are low, we'll skip the rest stop and keep moving to stay warm. If, by chance, a 60+ øree day is predicted, I'll have a longer cue sheet with an extra 10 miles and a rest stop prepared. Minimum temperature 45ø at ride start. Call if in doubt. Doug Johnston [johnstond@si.edu] C: 301/787-9664.
April 3 Tuesday
C(F) * 26 * VA * 10 AM * W&OD Trail Rte 28 Parking Lot (R28)
Sterling Discover the W&OD Trail . If you go to work late, have the day off, or simply want to play hookey, come out and bike the legendary W&OD Trail. Our annual mid-week W&OD cycling series begins with a spin from Sterling to the Vienna community center. Enjoy the Herndon historic district, Sunset Hills in Reston, and the parks along Difficult Run before reaching downtown Vienna. Helmet required. Glenn Gillis 703/430-0568.
April 7 Saturday
TANDEM * 29/35 * MD * 10 AM * Sherwood Elementary (SES) * 45°/50%
Northern Montgomery and Howard Cos . A rolling (read hilly) ride around the Tridelphia area in Montgomery and Howard counties. The ride leaders will most likely be doing the shorter ride, but cue sheets will be available for those who wish a slightly longer ride. The 29 mile route has one rest stop at about mile 18, the 35 mile ride has one at 24 miles. A gathering at the Olney Ale House after the ride is possible. No go if the chance of rain is greater than 50% or the roads are already wet. Jeff Giddings and Alice Filemyr [jhgiddings@gmail.com] 301/233-0285.
D * 20 * DC * 11 AM * Pierce Mill (PIM) * 34°
Georgetown Branch Rock creek loop . We will ride the Capitol Crescent Bicycle Trail. Easy ride, no big hills. We will stop for lunch in Bethesda returning along Rock Creek. Tim Bouquet [timothy.bouquet@acm.org] 202/387-8731.
D * 22 * MD * 11 AM * Candy Cane City (CAN) * 50°/50%
Lunch at Watergate . Enjoy a leisurely ride down Rock Creek Park to the Watergate condominiums (in memory of Al Jones, no burglary anticipated). Bring a lunch or buy it at Safeway or one for the restaurants in the Watergate Plaza. We'll return via the Capital Crescent Trail. Linda Borst-Kolko [flamingote@starpower.net] 301/270-5680.
C(MF) * 30 * VA * 10 AM * Roosevelt Island Parking Lot (ROO) * 50°/40%
Local Trails Ride . This ride will go at a genuine "C" pace when trail traffic permits. The route will depend on trail conditions at ride time. We will take the C&O canal trail up to Great Falls for a picnic if the trail is dry (road bikes not recommended). If the canal trail is gooey, we will take the Crescent-Rock Creek loop with a picnic on the way back. If there is a nuclear bomb threat and the city has emptied out, we will take the Mt. Vernon trail down to Mt. Vernon for a picnic. Call ride leader before 6 PM the night before the ride for updates. Bring helmets, water, and picnic lunch. Al Burt 703/521-9629.
CC * 42(H) * MD * 10 AM * Laytonsville SC (LAV) * 35°
Battle the Bulge . A George Haas Ride which I tried leading in February, but got rained out. Same old roads north of Laytonsville with some hills to help you get back in shape for the season. Standard stop at the High's Shell in Woodbine. Short-cuts available if you get chilly, wet, or tired. (No whining!) John Hutchinson [hutchjm@us.ibm.com] H: 301/926-8767 or 240/997-5820.
CC * 45 * VA * 11 AM * Naked Mountain Vineyard, Markham
Naked Mountain Waterloo . Come on out and ride an excellent Naked Mt. Winery route to Wilson Road and Waterloo Road, followed by an indoor/could be outdoor picnic (bring your own and to share) at the Winery. All ride levels are welcome. Or just come at 2:30 PM or so to socialize. The ride starts at Naked Mt. Winery (address, and link to the winery web site with excellent directions, below). Basically it is a long downhill at the start, which becomes a climb at the end that ultimately convinces you that lunch was well earned. Preview the cue sheet online at the PPTC site if you'd like, or call/email me to find out what the ride is like. (Directions: Naked Mountain Winery, 2747 Leeds Manor Rd / Rt 688. www.nakedmtnwinery.com. 540/364-1609.) Please NOTE: We cannot bring any alcohol or beer onto the grounds of the winery. Peter Klosky [pptc@peterklosky.com] C: 703/727-4939.
B * 34-51 * DC * 10 AM * Sutton Place
A Spring Meander in and Around DC . As usual, people are encouraged to initially load up on carbs and caffeines at Balducci's before heading through DC's northwest back roads to some off-beaten tracks in Montgomery County. The actual length of the ride will depend upon the weather. If we opt for the 39 or 48 mile route, we'll make a pit stop. Otherwise, we'll keep riding to keep the bodies warm until the end with the 34-mile route. Whichever route we take, all can be assured that we'll be hitting some back roads through Northwest DC and Montgomery County, including a long stretch on Beach Dr through Rock Creek Park leading to some meandering in Cleveland Park for the ringing of the bells of the National Cathedral signaling the ride's final mile. We'll deviate slightly from the typical route to enjoy the Cherry Blossoms at the Tidal Basin. If folks are interested, a lunch afterwards will be had at Chef Geoff or somewhere near the monuments. (Directions: Sutton Place (now Balducci's) is located at 3201 New Mexico, off Cathedral Ave, nearAmerican University.) Matt Birnbaum [noshbygosh@comcast.net] 202/360-3969.
BB * 56 * MD * 9:30 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Fixed Flats . A great ride designed by Mike Whitney and is fixee friendly as well. April is still early in the season and this is intended for getting over the 50 miles mark without working too hard. Leave the hammer home. The ride goes to a rest stop in Emmitsburg without any significant climbs, just the usual ups and downs of the Frederick area. "B" riders are welcomed as well. Aitan Ameti [aameti@verizon.net] 301/972-2819 or day of C: 301/502-2050.
BB * 62 * VA * 9:30 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL)
Up West! It's spring, so it must be time for me to lead this ride towards the northwestern reaches. No major hills, but plenty of rollers and some good sustained grades to test your legs. One rest stop in Upperville, invariably with barbeque aromas that drive you crazy. No go if raining or roads are wet. Steve Wartik [steve dot wartik at verizon dot net] 703/979-8885.
April 8 Sunday
D/C * 20/23 * MD * 10:15 AM * Veirs Mill RC (VMP)
Lunch at the Ale House . See the description for the 9:25 ride starting at CAN. One brief stop between VMP and the Ale House at Olney Manor Park. Chris Moriarity -- before 8 PM -- 301/270-3416.
C * 37 * MD * 9:25 AM * Candy Cane City (CAN)
Lunch at the Ale House . Cruise up Beach Drive and other streets (mostly residential) to the Olney Ale House. We'll stop at VMP enroute to pick up riders who want to start later and/or do less distance. Ride leaves at 9:25 sharp because of VMP pickup. Bring helmet, ID, lunch money, and lock. No go if wet roads, call ride leader between 8:15 AM and 8:30 AM on the morning of the ride if the weather is marginal. Cue sheet available online at http://www.qis.net/~cmoriarity . Chris Moriarity -- before 8 PM -- 301/270-3416.
C(MF) * 36 * VA * 10 AM * Nokesville Community Park (NCP) * 50%
South of Nokesville . Join us for this popular Virginia ride. We are able to stay relatively close to the Metro area, while still enjoying a rural setting. The ride is mostly flat to rolling with no serious hills to contend with. There are two rest stops to allow for regrouping and refreshment. I will lead at a true "C" pace and promise to leave no one behind. Ed Kerr [ekerr56@comcast.net] 703/791-6113.
CC * 42 * MD * 10 AM * Southern HS, Harwood (HAR)
The Real Deale . We've been here dozens of times on the way to Happy Harbor, but never really left the main road and explored the little beach towns on the Bay. This time, we will. Optional lunch stop in Deale. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. This is an honest CC-paced ride. (Directions to ride start: from I-95 Exit 11-A take Pennsylvania Ave / Rt 4 10 miles past Upper Marlboro to Waysons Corner. Take the exit for Rt 408 through Waysons Corner and go 5.5 miles to a roundabout. Take the second exit from the roundabout onto Rt 2 north. Continue 3.6 miles to the HS on the left.) Steve Palincsar [palincss@his.com] 703/548-1585.
CC/ATB(H) * 38 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Fauquier Rustic: Stealth Route to Orlean . About 10 miles of this route are unpaved one-lane, picturesque, bucolic roads that are typical to Fauquier County, which roads the county is fierce on preserving. Recommend touring bikes, cyclocross, and hybrid bikes. Mountain bikes are also appropriate, but since most of the ride is paved I recommend not using the typical heavy treaded mountain bike tires. I do recommend 700c x 28 - 32; 26 x 1.50. I'll buy a treat at the break for anyone who shows up on French 650b tires. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062 or C: 703/577-9567.
B(MH) * 46 * MD * 10 AM * Sherwood ES (SES)
Olney Surprise . Too old for the Easter Bunny? Have you gained 5 lbs from eating Easter candy? Well, come join me on this Easter Sunday ride. The route is rolling and goes through Howard and Carroll Counties. No go in the rain, hail storms, sand storms, high winds, fires, etc. If the weather is questionable, call the ride leader. Karen McMillan [kmcmillan1124@worldnet.att.net] 703/522-1475.
B * 50ish * VA * 9:30 AM * The Plains (PLA) * 50°/50%
The Plains Recovery Ride . If you did Steve's ride yesterday this will be a recovery ride. If not, you can pull. Rick said we need a rest stop so I'm still working on my wanderings. Should time be the stronger presence the rest of this month we'll do a cue already made; should I get lucky enough to get lost in my own time zone, then perhaps we'll wander around the Piedmont - 50ish. Janice Stoodley [Janice.stoodley@verizon.net] 703/532-3021.

BB(MH) * 50-70 * MD* 10:00 AM * Point of Rocks (POR)
Ghosts of Antietam Prelude . This ride reaches NW to the battlefield at Sharpsburg, and takes in many seldom-visited roads & small towns en route. Of course, there are two ridges to climb or scoot around at the river--Catoctin Mtn. and some climb of South Mtn are unavoidable, but we'll do some of their mildest crossings. I hope to roll along Elk Ridge and into Weaverton on the opposite hillside. Here's a chance to get some more climbing on the legs, without the big pains of e.g. Fox Gap or Mountville Rd. Depending on how the muse finds me, and the weather, I could have 3 cues: shorter, for Bees, in the 50 mi range; longer, for the A-types to keep pace with BBs. If weather is dubious, check the local e-waves or contact the ride leader. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113
April 14 Saturday
TANDEM * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Atholton HS

Bill & Sally Ryder [onebyke2ryders@yahoo.com] 410/730-5541 or 410/340-0205.
D * 17+ * MD * 11 AM * Poolesville HS (POO) * 50°/50%
Mouth of Monocacy . A pleasant ride over easy rural roads to the Potomac River at its confluence with the Monocacy. We will lunch at Bassett's in Poolesville at the end of the ride. Bring locks and helmets. Linda Borst-Kolko [flamingote@starpower.net] 301/270-5680.
C * 26 * VA * 10:30 AM * Lucketts Community Center (LUK) * 70%
Luck 'N' Love . A little jewel box of a ride with a modest hill going out and coming back. This ride starts in Lucketts, goes over the ridge to Lovettsville (Rest Stop), and on to the historic village of Waterford (a National Historic Landmark). Great views over mostly rolling ribbons of "rurban" roads. Bob Downs [RWD at bskb.com] C: 703/615-3702.
CC * 33 * MD * 10 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
Western Montgomery Circuit . Roads around Potomac and Poolesville with rolling terrain. Mike Divine [mikeandjoandivine@erols.com] 301/258-7820.
CC(H) * 41 * VA * 10:30 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot (WAR)
King of Swain Ride . Come out and do an early spring hilly ride on some of our favorite roads before the summer heat is upon us when we climb. The ride includes an early rest stop at the Orlean store (mile 7) and another at the Marshall 7-11 (mile 25). No go in steady rain. Please check with ride leader the morning of the ride by cell phone or email if the weather is dubious. Ride leader will post to the PPTC Topica message board Sunday morning by 8 AM if the ride is cancelled. Brin Luther [brinluther AT comcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.
B * 45/55 * VA * 9 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Piedmont Peregrination . I haven't ridden this route in many years but I vaguely remember a “couple” of hills. I expect that I'll be off the back doing a lot of sightseeing. Melinda Simons [melindasimons at yahoo.com] 703/892-4928.
BB/A * 53 * MD * 9:30 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)
Deale With It . Okay, so Al usually leads this one. But I figure that I also love this route, so let's give it a swing! All of the former problem sections have been repaved since last summer, and the rest stop options in Deale include either divine espresso or the fluorescent Mountain Dew! After the ride, we can dine on all-you-can-eat pizza and salad at Armand's (R.I.P. Luigi's). No go if there's gale-force winds or torrential rain - otherwise, we roll. Email the ride leader if the prognosticator's Magic 8 Ball comes up as questionable (and I'll post any late-breaking stuff - only the "regrets" type - to the Topica list and the BikePPTC.org forums). Shiftless Bums Ride Redux . A ride for those Luddites (and "C" Luddites welcome as well, BTW) who disdain the current trends in abundantly geared thousand-dollar bikes, have renounced coasting forever, relish the simplicity of one gear, hate cue sheets and want to save some bucks on gas by doing a nice local ride. I plan to hit the WO&D at noon from the VCC and ride it out to Purcellville and back. Probably stop in Purcellville for a short mid-morning repast; lots of rest stops and restrooms along the way. If you have an abundantly geared bike you are also very welcome, but single speed and fixee riders on vintage bikes will be worshiped accordingly. No go if heavy rain; if in doubt give me a holla on my cell an hour before the ride. Frank Giresi [fgiresi@verizon.net] C: 202/368-0887.

Boyce 'N Berryville Forever! It's back to the bucolic lanes and gently rolling terrain of the Shenandoah Valley for a ride I've led over and over again. Ride begins in Boyce, Virginia, and loops through the West Virginia Panhandle on the way through Berryville on familiar roads. Apple-Blossom Bouquet - 14th Annual
These rides target the blooming (we hope) apple orchards in the Shenandoah valley in some of the area covered by the Berryville PPTC century routes. The terrain is fairly mild, tandem friendly (but not "flat" or boring). Along with the apples, there are usually ample redbud & some dogwood. Riders willing to monitor their odometers (or work with mis-matched mileage to cues) might find an around the block tour of Stephens City enjoyable. The Route 11 Chips factory store has fresh offerings for sale & sample, and sometimes one can view the baking process. Add to the day by bringing something to eat or drink after the ride. There are also some nearby attractions: the Burwell-Morgan mill in Millwood, and the Virginia state arboretum along Rt 50 nearby. (Directions: from I-495 go west on I-66 about 40 mi; exit north for "Route 17 / Delaplane" (after Marshall) and go all the way to the T at Rt 50; go west/left on Rt 50 for 9mi to the 1st light (Sheetz, potties) and turn right on Rt 340; follow Rt 340 a few miles into Boyce, and turn left at the blinking? light onto Rt 723; in 0.2 mi turn left into the school lot ("BB/A" riders pass this entry to the next one, front of school under trees). Similar routes exist for Rt 50 most of the way, and for Rt 7 to Berryville and then south on Rt 340 --with more in-town traffic lights, maybe fewer miles.)
