Kentlands Kaper . We will ride on Quince Orchard Rd., Route 28 and Seneca Rd. for a short stretch. Traffic can be heavy and the shoulder is not wide. I recommend helmet or bike mounted mirrors. Riders can use the bathroom of Gaithersburg Dental Care to change. (Directions: From I-270 take I-370 / Sam Eig Hwy west to a right turn (North) onto Great Seneca Hwy and proceed 2-3 miles. Turn left at Quince Orchard Rd. Make the first left (at Exxon station) which is Booth St. Another quick left at Arch Pl and proceed 2 blocks to the parking lot. B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . The cherry blossoms might adorn some roads in the first week, as we continue our season of evening riding. We'll try to be rolling out at 6:10 promptly; but later starting riders have an easy intercept course to join in. The park is situated in a nice setting of smooth, quiet roads; the route stays within 3 mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride; Bill, e.g., has gills. Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241 9113.

C * 17 (MF) * VA * 6 PM * South Run Recreation Center * 50%
South Run Burke Lake Occoquan Loop . Little traffic and lots of shade! This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a shaded bike path. Then we cycle along the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. We double back - and after an energizing climb - return on neighborhood streets and another shaded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sounds of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.)) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/350-9209 or Teri Larriva 703/644 0884 or C: 703/629 8847.
April -- Thursdays
C/CC * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Spring is back! So is the Tenley Circle ride . Meet the regular group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma street and ride with us every Thursday until the end of September. Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! No go if raining or wet roads. Let's get the season started! Reggie Beard 240/899 2391 or Steve Brickell 301/946 2520.
B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday listing for further information. Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241 9113.
B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436 6128.
April -- Fridays
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 44°
Weekend Warmup . Join our nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual "CC" paced flatish ride with a few nice climbs for your trouble. Lunch after ride if temps in the 60s. Possible hot chocolate stop mid-ride. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot and not across the street at Ivy Lane. Ride decision is dependent on conditions so if cold but sunny we might go - call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. If marginal or in doubt CALL! George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854 0388 or 202/997 2376.
CC+ * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR) * 50°/50%
Scenic Social! . This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. Note: ride leaders may change from week to week and/or be chosen from the "regulars" in attendance. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. CC: Brenda Ruby C: 301/602-4683 B: Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600 BB: Bill Hermatch [bhermz@yahoo.com] A: Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367 2600.
April 5 Saturday
TANDEM * 33/42 * MD * 10 AM * Southern HS, Harwood MD (HAR)
Ride to Harwood . Joint WABITS/CRABS ride to Deale with lunch at a restaurant in Deale on the water. A nice ride with some pretty overlook views of the water on the longer route. The ride has some hills, but is not too difficult. The ride back after lunch is the same for both rides and is about 10 miles. The ride leaders will be doing the 42 mile ride. Call ride leaders if weather is doubtful. C: 240/271-9168 Team Glasgow, Ross & Donna [Rossell.Glasgow@FERC.gov] H: 301/249 5055.
D * 20 * DC * 11 AM * Pierce Mill (PIM) * 34°
Georgetown Branch Rock Creek Loop . We will ride the Capitol Crescent Bicycle Trail. Easy ride, no big hills. We will take a brief detour to see the Kenwood cherry blossoms and stop for lunch in Bethesda returning along Rock Creek. Tim Bouquet [timothy.bouquet@acm.org] 202/387 8731.
D/C * 28 * MD * 9 AM * Shady Grove Metro (SHA) * 50%
Hill Cheater Ride . A one way ride to Bethesda for lunch via Great Falls and Glen Echo at a D/slow C pace, mostly on residential streets. We lose altitude. The attitude will be that we'll more or less stay together, "D" ride style. Return to Shady Grove via Metro. Leader will provide instructions for bike on Metro; WMATA guidelines are at http://www.wmata.com/riding/bike/bikeonrails.cfm . Exit Shady Grove Metro by turning right at the turnstile, meet outside the NE tunnel exit. Check with ride leader to see if the ride is on if the predicted high temperature for the day is less than 40°. Margaret Chapman -- evenings other than Tuesdays -- 301/977 8988.

The fire road, constructed in Springfield by a CCC camp comprised of African American men based at Fort Belvoir, crossed through present day Lake Accotink Park. Music, refreshments, walking tours and exhibits will make this event entertaining for history buffs and other park visitors. Free. Event held rain or shine. Advance registration helpful though not mandatory. 703/569-0285 www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks. Woody Lipinski [woodylipinski@cox.net] 703/764 2702.

Biking and Bubba's . We will ride from Mile Post marker #8 on the W & O D trail to Mile Post #23 at Sterling Blvd. Meet at Shrevewood Elementary School Parking Lot, Falls Church. (Directions: I-495 to exit #8 / Rt 50 east / Fairview Park Dr N. Stay on Fairview Park Dr about 1/2 mile, turn left on Lee Hwy and take 1st right at light onto Shreve Rd. CC * 40 * VA * 10 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/50%
Old Town to Vienna Town . Let's get the bike season started! This will be my first ride lead of 2008, and it was the last ride I led last fall, so I will be rusty. (Not quite ready for the Blue Ridger -- YET!) Those who want to go on ahead of me may certainly do so, but I will appreciate the patient company of those who want to hang with me. This is one of the few rides that originates close in, and almost no "CC" rides start near Alexandria. We will follow the Mt Vernon trail north through historic Alexandria, then upriver to Rosslyn where we will climb out of the Potomac River Valley on the Custis Trail and then take the W&OD Trail to Vienna. For those who are not health-food-prone, I will stop at the venerable Vienna Inn for dogs and brews. The ride turns around at that point, returning via the W&OD, Shirlington, Beverly Hills, and Old Town back to the ride start. NOTE: The ride will meet at the rest room area of Belle Haven Park. Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] 571/332 2571.
B * 30 -50 * MD * 9:30 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
Spring has Sprung . Let's ride around on those wonderful roads in Poolesville. This ride has options, as little as 30, as far as 50 miles. Only rollers on this "let's get in shape ride". All are welcome, but ride leader will ride a "B" pace. Helmets, please, and park in the corner away from the school. Spring sports will be in full swing. FYI. This is a cue sheet borrowed from Bob Bloomfield. Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] 301/367 2430.
BB/A(MH) * 48/68 * VA * 9:30 AM * The Plains (PLA) * 40°/50%
Plains Snickering . Relaxed ride (maybe, depending on who exhibits irrational exuberance) on quiet rolling roads. We'll take the back way to Middleburg, then ride the Snickersville Turnpike rollers to Airmont before returning on Rectortown and Frogtown Rd, among others. Longer option takes a jaunt up to Purcellville and Hillsboro for those who want the extra miles. Plenty of steep (but short) hills to warm us up. John Carey [carey<>aya.yale.edu] 703/534 4613.
April 6 Sunday
TANDEM * 30/33 * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
Middleburg Meander . Stop at 16.1 miles for Cokes and food. Rolling Piedmont. Blue Ridge Mountains. Horse farms and estates. Jack Kent Cooke's former estate. Smooth rolling hills. No monster hills. No water at start. Restrooms nearby at Safeway and Exxon. Dave and Julie Harper [Dave-n-julie@comcast.net] 703/925 0338.
ALL * 24 * MD * 10 AM * Candy Cane City (CAN) * 50°/50%
Beach to Creek (& Linda's Birthday Ride!) . A nice in-town ride with an emphasis on natural scenery. We'll ride up Beach Drive, through nice neighborhoods with some long hills, and down Sligo Creek Parkway. This ride invites ALL pace levels and naturally splits into smaller groups. The ride leader's pace is CC; a cadre of regulars know the route and will help those who are faster or slower. There will be no sweep. We'll regroup when we stop at the Takoma Park Co-Op for a quick bite. NOTE THE DIFFERENT RIDE START. If you want to start at Pierce Mill, leave by 9:30 and ride up Beach Drive. You will arrive to CAN by ride start time. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. Contact ride leader if in doubt. Linda Schwartz [lschwartz216@gmail.com] 202/468 6681.
D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington . Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet at 11 AM on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library / Signature Theater on Campbell Ave (formerly named 28th St South.), Arlington 22206, to select a restaurant, then go to lunch at about 1 PM. See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 11 AM and 1 PM you are welcome to join the leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet and map on PPTC website, and passed out at ride). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow "C" pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more or fewer miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining: lunch is at 11 AM; ride is no go. (Detailed Directions: I. From Beltway / I-495: Take I-395 North; Take Exit 6 - Shirlington / Quaker Lane; bear left over highway, move immediately into right lane, and turn left at the first traffic light onto Arlington Mill Dr; cross through traffic light at intersection of South Randolph St and Arlington Mill Dr then make the next left onto Campbell Ave; proceed one block and turn right into the parking garage (if your bike is on top of your car, park in open-air lot along Arlington Mill Dr instead); park on an upper level (lowest level is reserved); exit the garage and turn right: meet on the brick plaza in front of Signature Theater / Shirlington Library. CC * 36 * VA * 10 AM * Nokesville Community Park (NCP) * 45°
Nokesville Picnic 36 Mile Ride . This is a great ride because there are not a lot of cues and there are plenty of places to stop on the second half of the ride. Terrain is flat to gently rolling with two very small rolls at the end that I find annoying just because there has hardly been anything up 'til them. I'll be "leading" the ride from the back because that's what happens anyway and one might as well make a virtue out of riding slowly. Questions on weather (won't go if it's actually raining) or any other, contact ride leader (please note that ride leader does not obsessively check email on weekends so call if it's really important). Catherine Kitchell [ckitchell@earthlink.net] 301/657 9793.
CC(MH) * 45-50mi * MD * 10 AM * Poolesville HS (POO) * 40°/40%

B * > 10 < 100 * MD * 10 AM * Veirs Mill Park RC (VMP)
Ken's Surprise . Your actual mileage may vary as Ken did not give me much to go on other than a ride start location. My thanks to him for volunteering to fill the ride schedule. Come on out and support Ken and see what he has up his sleeve and in his legs. (Bob B.) Ken Sanford [kanford at verizon.net] 301/942 5208.
BB(MF) * 62 * VA * 9:30 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot-A (WAR)
Country Life . Save for the last six miles, this ride is about as flat as they come. You'll be deluded into thinking you're stronger than you really are as the paceline carries you along the long country roads. One rest stop at Elk Run. No go in rain or on seriously wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] C: 571/232 0164.
BB/A * 53 * MD * 9:30 AM * Laytons Village SC (LAV)
50 Miles to Nowhere. This is quickly becoming a club favorite. 53 relatively flat miles that pass thru Lisbon two times, and narrowly misses a third time thru. Plenty of short cut options if the weather is questionable. Karen Berlage 301/963 1482.
April 12 Saturday
TANDEM * 30/50 * VA * 10:30 AM * Clarke County HS (CCH)
Berryville-Milltown Loop . Take a springtime ride through picturesque, historic, Clarke County on the lightly traveled roads that are part of the PPTC Century in the fall. These roads are just too perfect to do but once a year! Some rolling hills (only about 1200 ft gain in all), but the scenery and the wonderful food at Locke Store in Milltown make it well worth the effort. Note the 10:30 start to give everyone extra time for the drive to Berryville. If weather doubtful, call before 9 AM. Shenandoah River Rustic Ramble (paved/unpaved) . A special ride that winds along both shores of the Shenandoah River, on both dirt and paved roads, with happy bluebells along the roadsides to cheer us on. Suitable for bikes with wide tires, such as cyclocross, hybrids, mountain bikes, 650B. It is definitely worth the drive. The "H" describes about half the ride. One store at mile 31, but leaders plan to take a rest stop at about mile 20 so please bring snacks. If you have any questions about the ride, call or email the ride leaders. Plenty of long stretches of smooth, rolling roads and one section (0.75 mile) of dirt/gravel on Cannonball Gate Rd. The 46 mile route is gravel-free and parts company with the longer ride at mile 33. I'll ride in a drizzle but not a downpour. Will post cancellation to the forums if necessary. Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbm<>verizon.net] H: 202/543 8005 or 202/834 9309.

Bear and Bull . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a rural ride out of Tyler ES to points north, thereby avoiding the long hill into The Plains. The ride traverses country roads alongside tranquil woodlands and pleasing pastures. When Ed Kerr and I originally pre-rode the route in the spring of 2007, a bear was spotted at mile 13. Later, Ed had a stare-down with a bull calf that had escaped from the pasture. BOTH TRUE! Me, I did not try to out-distance either the bear or the bull, but I made a point of keeping Ed between me and the critters. The ride is moderately hilly but is also refreshingly flat or downhill in many places. One rest stop at 16 miles. No restroom at ride start. Total ascent is about 1,900 feet over 34 miles or 55 feet per mile. Questions? Call ride leader at home NLT 2 hours before ride start or on cell phone thereafter. How Hilly is My Valley . Third time a charm? We got frozen out of the full 65 mile version in November and February, but hopefully Spring will have sprung and we can do all 65 miles this time. This ride winds up, down and through the hills and dales of the valley east of Frederick north to Union Bridge for a rest stop, turns south to Mt Airy for a second rest stop, and then turns westward for the chug back to Urbana. In addition to a surprising amount of elevation gain, we get to use some rarely used roads, and some roads in new combinations and directions. If temperatures at the start are predicted to be below 40° or are not projected to get above 50° that day, check the Forums or Pedalers Group Friday night for possible revised start time and/or distance. Faking It From The Real City . Who says that, in these days of pricey petrol, it's necessary to drive out to the 'burbs to have a great ride? This ride takes a quick route out of DC to the hills of MoCo, via Potomac and Seneca, then back to DC and the ride start via Rock Creek Park. There ought to be enough hilly variation and semi-rural scenery to keep things interesting, and the ride leader has skied more this winter than in years past, so the pace could be a challenge, even for the leader. No go if there's a steady downpour, tornadoes, or rhino stampedes - otherwise, we roll. Any last minute updates will be posted to the Pedalers Google Group and the PPTC forums. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's Pub (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. Apple-Blossom Bouquet (15th Annual) . These rides target the blooming (we hope) apple orchards in the Shenendoah valley in some of the area covered by the Berryville PPTC century routes. The terrain is fairly mild, tandem friendly (but not "flat" or boring). Along with the apples, there are usually ample redbud & some dogwood. Riders willing to monitor their odometers (or work with mis-matched mileage to cues) might find an around the block tour of Stephens City enjoyable. The Route 11 Chips factory store has fresh offerings for sale & sample, and sometimes one can view the baking process. Add to the day by bringing something to eat or drink after the ride. There are also some nearby attractions: the Burwell-Morgan mill in Millwood, and the Virginia state arboretum along Rt.50 nearby. (Directions: from I-495 go west on I-66 about 40 mi; exit north for "Route 17 / Delaplane" (afer Marshall) and go all the way to the T at Rt 50; go west/left on Rt 50 for 9mi to the 1st light (Sheetz, potties) and turn right on Rt 340; follow Rt 340 a fewmiles into Boyce, and turn left at the blinking? light onto Rt 723; in 0.2 mi turn left into the school lot ("BB/A" riders pass this entry to the next one, front of school under trees). Similar routes exist for Rt 50 most of the way, and for Rt 7 to Berryville and then south on Rt 340 -- with more in-town traffic lights, maybe fewer miles.) Check w/leaders if weather is dubious. A Double Shot of Brandy Station . This long version of the "Between the Rivers" ride explores the seldom-visited scenic rolling farmland north of Remington before heading down to Brandy Station for lunch and on to Batna and Kelly's Ford. Steve Palinscar [palincss@his.com] 703/548 1585.

Local Yokels Revised . We still visit Great Falls and McLean, but due to the relocation of one of the co-leaders we are now starting and ending in Vienna -- no, not Austria. This ride no longer goes through Arlington. Hey, there are just as many local yokels in Vienna as there are in Arlington to look at, maybe more. We still stop at the Sweet Stuff Pastry Shop and we have found a new place to have an after-ride treat, it just will not be Mom's Place. Spring Roundabout . I will show you some of my favorite roads and hills in this little corner of AA County, including Millersville, Gambrills, and Crownsville. Some roads are rural, scenic, and quite hilly. There is optional food stop at WAWA. Ride may be longer or shorter depending on weather and loops I have decided on. Pace is determined by majority of group, should be easy on the hills. Lunch after ride at Mexican restaurant. (Directions: From Beltway, US 50 East to a left on MD 424 / Davidsonville Rd. Go 3 miles to intersection with MD 450. Turn right into Staples Corner SC. Meet near Dunkin Donuts.) Jerry Collins [jerryc.bike@yahoo.com] 301/641 3415.

Wild & Wonderful . This is a gorgeous and challenging ride through the Maryland and Virginia countryside with a brief visit to the panhandle of West Virginia, where you can grab a tasty pastry at the Sweet Shop Bakery in Shepherdstown. The calories won't count as the nearly 7,000 feet of climbing and lots of rollers will burn them off. The route goes via the scenic towns of Lovettsville, Brunswick, Burkittsville, Sandy Hook, Harper's Ferry (seen from the MD side of the Potomac), Shepherdstown, Sharpsburg, Middletown and Jefferson. The climbs up Gapland, Hoffmaster, and Reno Monument are steep and challenging, and Marlu Ridge "the easy way" isn't so easy with tired legs. That said, I'm not a great climber and I love this ride. I think of it as a celebration of gears. No go in rain or on wet roads. Len Burman [len.burman@gmail.com] C: 703/216-5085. Barbara Scott [bscottbike@yahoo.com] SND/EEE MAIL.
