B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast. This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups - with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
August -- Fridays

CC+ * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
Friday Scenic Social!. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. Note: ride leaders may change from week to week and/or chosen from the "regulars" in attendance. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. CC(H) * 40 * VA * 9 AM * The Plains (PLA)
Fauquier County Rustic #13 (unpaved). About 21 miles of unpaved country lanes that are unique to the area and considered the most beautiful, serene roads in the County. The route is generally rolling, but there are enough short steep rises and gully-dippers to qualify as a hilly ride, - - you will appreciate your lower gears. Touring bikes (both 700c and 650b), hybrids, cyclo-cross, and mountain bikes will all do. Tom Roberson recommends 700/28, 32, and 26 x 1.50 tires. Jim Houghton [houghtonjf@hotmail.com] 703/266-2209.

B * 57-65 * MD * 8:30 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
Who Said Matt Does Not Ride outside DC?. This ride will bring back fond memories of rides along time-honored roads past Riley's Lock. For the adventurous, Marlu will be there for the taking. For those looking to omit this thrill, there is a detour to miss it. Either way, there are two rest stops along the route. People who go on this ride are encouraged to ride hard. They also should not be ashamed to socialize and be merry. The ride leader is promising to jump in the water for a swim at the ride's end. All are encouraged to stay for an old-fashioned tailgate at ride's end, featuring beer and authentic Wisconsin brats (with, of course, veggie options). Please bring a dish/ refreshment to share. B (MH) * 72/44 * MD * 8 AM * Bollman Bridge ES (BOL)
Six County Ride. It was raining at my house so I cancelled the ride last month and then was told by friends to get my butt down there so we could ride. There is an official short cut and it is possible to do 50 or so miles (3 counties) by combining parts of the long and short rides (only 2 counties). From Savage (Howard County) the ride heads north to Ellicott City and into Baltimore and Carroll Counties. After traversing more of Howard County the ride goes through the reservoir to Montgomery County and back via Prince Georges and we just touch Anne Arundel County. There is one official rest stop and other options. There are no facilities at the start and food/rest rooms are few on the route in order to stay on low traffic country roads. No go if it is raining at my house. Call if in doubt. No email on the weekend. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.
BB/A * 68 * MD * 8:30 AM * Layton's Village SC (LAV)
Antiquing Away. A standard "A" ride around upper Montgomery County with enough hills to give us an honest workout. No go if there is a better than 40% chance of rain. Hugo Romero [hugo.romero@nrl.navy.mil] SND/EEE-MAIL.
BB/A (MH) * 65ish * VA * 9 AM * Loudoun County HS, Leesburg (LOU)
Widdershins Across the River. The reverse of Twice Across the River offers the climbs of Stumptown (fresh pavement) & Taylorstown (the easy ways), and MarLu (the hard way) before the rest stop. After climbing out of Brunswick back into Virginia, it's pretty much smooth sailing. Last year, there were a few uncomfortable miles on the ever-busier but still narrow Rte 7 between Purcellville and Hamilton; this year, I'll parallel that section on the W&OD. No go in rain or on really wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] C: 571/232-0164.

Mason Neck Picnic Ride. Join us for a relaxing social ride along a mix of lightly-traveled roads and paved bike trails on a scenic peninsula near Occoquan. We will ride through Mason Neck State Park, the adjacent National Wildlife Preserve, Gunston Hall historic plantation, and some lovely neighborhoods facing the Potomac River. This is a flat ride (only one short hill) with lots of shade and natural beauty the whole way. At the end, we will celebrate with a BYO picnic accompanied by free cold drinks. The ride loops around the start area, so you are never more than a few miles from your car. Toilet facilities are available. Nobody will be left behind. Call ride leader that morning if weather looks doubtful. (Directions: Take I-95 South to Lorton Exit (163) to Rt 1 South. Turn left on Gunston Rd and go approximately six miles to the ride start at the Great Marsh Trail parking lot on the right.) Jake Chesson [jake3315@yahoo.com] C: 703/798-8435.

Annapolis and Sandy Point, Shorter Version. I can't decide if I want to go to Annapolis or the beach, so I found a way to visit both. Come bike along the B&A Trail (and other roads), to a beautiful beach on the bay. Ride stops in Annapolis then goes to Sandy Point State Park along the Chesapeake Bay. Be prepared to go for a swim if you really want to cool off on the middle of the ride (if it's hot enough). See great views of the Bay Bridge. Pickup point for shorter version of ride that starts in Marley Station; I may arrive at ride start late if original ride leaves late. (Directions: From I-95; take exit MD-100 East towards Glen Burnie. Take Exit 16A Ritchie Hwy south to Jones Station Rd. Early Bird: Green Acres Edition. Can't choose between a close-in ride in the city (i.e., Beach Dr) or a ride in the country? This ride gives you both. We'll thread our way from downtown Silver Spring through the Kensington and Bethesda suburbs, the Potomac exurbs and finally to the country near Riley's Lock. The route is mostly flat to rolling, but we may find a real hill or two before turning around for home. One or two rest stops depending on mood. No go in steady rain; call after 5:30 AM if the weather is doubtful or if there were heavy storms the night before. Feel free to contact any of us with questions. Luck 'N' Love. This ride, designed by Dan Lehman, starts in Lucketts, goes over the big mountain to Lovettsville and then to the lovely historic village of Waterford which is a National Historic Landmark. There are a dozen more homes on the route than there were last year but this is very pretty and there are great views into Maryland (including the Dickerson incinerator smokestacks and Sugarloaf Mountain beyond.) One big uphill going out and coming back but the rest is mostly rolling. Shop for antiques in Lucketts at the end. No go if actually raining but if there are doubts please call, don t email. Down to the Bay. We ride to Galesville (Haven't I been here before?) via South River. Because of road closure on MD 450 - new bridge construction - this is a different ride start, as we pick up the usual Galesville route on Riva Rd. Highlights are extra steep climb on Chesterfield, scenic view of South River, waterfront tour of West River, and bucolic backcountry roads on the return. As parking is limited at Staples Corner, there is additional parking at Crofton MS, 1/4 mile north on MD 424. Arrive early for coffee and doughnuts and stay after ride for lunch at Mia Casa Mexican Restaurant. No go in rain. Marshall to Aaron Mountain. In May, we had to turn back in rain, so we'll try again. We'll head to Washington via Flint Hill, but instead of the usual out-and-back, we'll climb Aaron Mtn from the West. This includes a short, flat unpaved section (the mischievous part of Mariette's Mischief). After a stop at Laurel Mills, we return via Amissville which puts us in position to climb Carter's Run Rd back to Marshall. I've ridden it many times the easy way but want to see what it's like to finish a ride by climbing the, I'm told, 13 hills. No go in rain or on seriously wet roads. Call if in doubt. Meet in the West Hyattsville Metro (Green Line) Park and Ride Lot, 2700 Hamilton St, Hyattsville, MD, near Queens Chapel Rd and Ager Rd. A Piedmont Peregrination. This is a great ride that deserves to be done more often, so let's hope for nice weather. I think the Virginia Piedmont is more attractive than Vermont, although the towns are not as interesting. I will be back from a tour in northern Vermont in late July, so this will provide a fresh comparison. It is a lovely ride with many marvelous views of the Blue Ridge and its foothills. The first nine miles are the hilliest part of the ride (and they can be bypassed). The rest of the ride is mainly rolling with lots of not-very-tough hills. Rest stops in Flint Hill and Orlean at miles 20 and 41, respectively. A short-cut is available that cuts ten miles off the end of the ride, but bypasses the second rest stop in Orlean. Helmets please. Cue sheets are available on the web at "www.pankin.com." Call leader if weather is questionable. Mark Pankin * mark<>pankin.com * 703/524-0937.

Blue Ridger Backwards. Naked Mountain and Mt Weather -- the easy way. Great descents! Okay, there are some uphill parts too and there is no easy way up Mt Weather, but it seems a little less steep this way than the other. Southern Comfort. It s new! And perfect for C riders who hate hills, CC riders who love a paceline, and tandems. This is another new ride out of Brentsville Historical Park that uses somewhat familiar country lanes and then goes further south of Bristerburg on roads that PPTC does not usually frequent. There are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches and there are few hills. (I hate the hills -- the uphill halves, but the downhill halves are alright.) The ride starts at Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park. Of six notable buildings, the one-room schoolhouse is one of the few remaining in Prince William County. Total ascent is only 1,200 feet over 34 miles or a flat-ish 35 feet per mile and 1,500 over 50 miles or 30 feet per mile. BRING A PICNIC for yourself and we will dine in fine style. (Directions: Brentsville Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA 20136 adjacent to the Presbyterian Church. Use mapquest or similar for directions.) Restroom facilities at ride start probably not open. However, they should be open after the ride. Questions? Call ride leader at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Hamilton Figure-8 Rustic (paved/unpaved). This ride explores many of the rustic, lesser-traveled roads of Loudoun that exist south of VA Rt 7. Twenty-four of the 30 miles are on gravel, so bring your touring, crossover, ATB, or other bike with wide enough tires to do well on gravel roads. Only store (but no restroom) is at mile 16, and there are no other amenities along the route. There are no restroom facilities at the start, so you might want to stop off in Leesburg or Purcellville on the way to the ride start. Also, there is a port-a-john along the W&OD trail just north of the VA Rt 7 exit ramp and 100 yards west on the bike path; and another at the Hamilton Community Park on VA Bus Rt 7 only 0.4 miles west of the ride start. NCR Trail Picnic Ride. Come join us for a relaxing social ride under a beautiful canopy of trees on the North Central Railroad Trail just north of Baltimore. The NCR Trail is a lightly-used pastoral gem that runs almost flat along a small winding river through Gunpowder Falls State Park and then continues all the way to York, PA. It has a wide, smooth, packed-stone surface suitable for all riders and most bikes. The ride starts at the Paper Mill Rd parking area on the NCR trail and proceeds 11 miles to the "New Wishing Well" inhabited by leprechauns warning "Violators will be Toad." On the way back, we will stop for a picnic break at Monkton where sandwiches and drinks are available if you need them. There are full toilets at Monkton and portable facilities along the trail every few miles. This is an up and back ride at an easy pace, so nobody will be left behind. Call ride leader that morning if weather looks doubtful. (Directions: Take I-95N to I-695N (Exit 49B - Baltimore Beltway) to I-83N (Exit 24) going toward York. With music ranging from Bach to ragtime, the Percussion Duo demonstrates how percussion forms the rhythmic foundation of the orchestra. Figure 8 to Occoquan. This close-in ride is much the same as the Wednesday evening ride but with an added loop to give us a bit more distance. Little traffic and lots of shade! This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a shaded bike path and then into a neighborhood just off of the parkway. Then we cycle along the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Village. We double back - and after an energizing climb - return on neighborhood streets and another shaded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sounds of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield, VA. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.)) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or 703/350-9209.

Boyce and Berryville as Summer Begins to Fade Away. Alas, this is part 4 of 4 in my ongoing saga of Boyce rides. Those of you who have enjoyed them before are urged to come out again. It will probably be hot, but I'm hoping we'll have the soft beginnings of a quasi-autumnal breeze to help us along. The greenery of the Virginia horse country will soon be changing to oranges and yellows, so this could be our good-bye to summer before the cooler weather sets in. You all know the drill. On truly rural roads, we loop from Boyce northward into West Virginia, returning via Berryville on paths known to one and all as part of the Club Century. This is not a hard ride (there is only one difficult climb), and we have a rest stop at the 9 mile mark and one at 30 miles. Afterwards, I may opt to head over the Hunter's Head Tavern in Upperville, which is on the way back, for brews and lunch. NO GO IN RAIN. (Directions: from the Beltway / I-495, west on I-66 about 40 miles to exit North at "U.S. Rt 17/Delaplane" (after Marshall), go to the T at Rt 50, West/L on U.S.Rt 50 for 9 miles to first TL (Sheetz, potties), right on U.S. Rt 340 for a few miles into Boyce, turn L at the blinking light onto VA Rt 723, and then in 0.2 mi turn L into the school parking lot.) Culpeper Caper: Follow the Leader. We'll be using Anne Brown rules (no drops, no cue sheets)*. This ride highlights the rolling forests and farms north of Culpeper, with numerous stream crossings and some nice views of the Blue Ridge. We may shorten the ride in the event of extremely hot weather. *It's regrettable that group rides are typically not really group rides at all, but just so many individual riders following the same cue sheet, each at his or her own pace -- that pace being usually much faster than the official "CC" pace. To provide an alternative, we will lead a ride without cue sheets, thus encouraging attendees to follow the leader. One of us will sweep, ensuring that no one will be dropped. The route is mostly flat to rolling, but we may find a real hill or two before turning around for home. One or two rest stops depending on mood. Ride leaders will ride the posted pace, but riders at any other level who don't need a formal ride leader are welcome. No go in steady rain; call after 5:30 AM if the weather is doubtful or if there were heavy storms the night before. Feel free to contact any of us with questions. Early Horse. A good one from Scott & Jim's Favorite Bike Rides. Giddyup early to enjoy many a gentle roller and a few short, stiff hills among some of the smoothest and least trafficked roads in Loudoun county. Leader will canter at a "BB" pace, but trotters and gallopers who don't need a formal bridle are welcome. For any Belmont Stakes-suited breeds liking a longer course more than an early finish, there are two 16-mile loops from The Plains (around Pond Mtn or through Hopewell Gap) that can give a 3/4 century; you're on your own.
