Downtown Breakaway. Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone - the division between "A" and "BB" usually happens closer to the return stretch, which most people (hopefully) know, though the cues are easy for said stretch. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark or make your evening date, although no "B" leader this month. Ride leaves from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. Parking in the neighborhood, but please be mindful of zone regulations, as ticketing crews are known to enforce as the ride distances lengthen. Leaders may alternate week to week, alternating according to availability. B (MH) * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL)

A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups - with a punishing pace at the front. Kathryn Momot [Kathryn.Momot@nreca.coop] C: 703/200-3113.

B/BB * 31 * MD * 5:45 PM * Davidsonville P&R (DPR)
Davidsonville Delight. Join Tina McDermott and Gang for our Thursday night friendly ride through the lovely rolling countryside. The first five miles is a nice warm up and then it's the question of who can make it to the top of Harwood Hill. The pace can range from 16 to 19 mph depending on who comes out and gets faster as the season progresses. This is a great training ride to help you get stronger for the weekend rides as well as learn good bike handling skills with pace lining and proper biking techniques. I hate the rain so don't even think that I'll be there for it. Tina McDermott [tinasbike@comcast.net] 410/570-5170.

CC/B/BB/A * 18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social!. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. NEW RIDE START: We'll change the ride start to just across the road from where we normally meet. We'll meet on the south-east side of the circle on Schaeffer Rd. where there is a real bathroom and tons more parking! Watch the speed cameras on Schaeffer Rd. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. Dinner afterwards is often an option and all are welcome.

This is a social, friendly ride along a pretty flat section of the C&O Canal towpath which has a thick tree canopy providing for a shady ride. A hybrid bicycle is ideal for this ride, but a road bike should work too. Lunch can be purchased at one of the tourist-oriented sandwich shops in Harpers Ferry. It would be wise to bring a helmet, water, bike lock, and money for lunch. If raining: ride is no go. Check the "Ride News" forum on the PPTC website for last-minute/cancellation news. Getting to the Ride Start: see PPTC website for directions (if you cannot access the PPTC website, email the ride leader for directions well before the day of the ride); the "Car Pool/Ride Share Forum" on the PPTC website is a good place to find others going to this ride. Unpainted Country Lanes. Perfect for "C" riders who hate hills, "CC" riders who love a pace line, and tandems. This ride goes on all paved but many unpainted roads and twists around country lanes like a colander full of over-cooked spaghetti. And yet there are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches. Traffic is minimal and the route hardly has hills. Total ascent for both distances is a flat-ish 30 feet per mile. Restroom facilities may not be open at ride start. Third Anniversary Warrenton Wonderlust Ride. All levels are welcome to come out and help commemorate the third anniversary of what we call The WW Ride (or, WW III). A bit of history: in August 2006 female ride leader decided to revive an old AIDS Ride Training Ride that she did too many times while training for the 1999 and 2000 AIDS Rides. She cajoled five intrepid friends to join her on the hottest day any of us can still recall and off we went. Since then, the ride has become a favorite so we want to celebrate it. Ride leaders will do whatever length they feel up to since both are hilly. Plenty of rest stops, but bring 2 water bottles since it is August. We'll head over to our new favorite wine bar (serves good beer too) in downtown Warrenton afterwards for a late lunch. Please contact ride leaders well before the ride start with questions (i.e., not the morning of the ride as we'll be on the road early). No go in steady rain. Check the PPTC website Ride Forum by 6 AM on Saturday if the forecast is dubious to see if ride cancelled. Who Said Matt Does Not Ride outside DC?. This ride will bring back fond memories of rides along time-honored roads past Riley's Lock. For the adventurous, Marlu will be there for the taking. For those looking to omit this thrill, there is a detour to miss it. Either way, there are two rest stops along the route. People who go on this ride are encouraged to ride hard. They also should not be ashamed to socialize and be merry. The ride leader is promising to jump in the water for a swim at the ride's end. All are encouraged to stay for an old-fashioned tailgate at ride's end, featuring beer and authentic Wisconsin brats (with, of course, veggie options). Please bring a dish/ refreshment to share. Airlie to Aldie. Not sure who get's credit for designing this route. It may have been George Washington back in the day. Whoever it was, designed a great ride and left us a nice cue sheet on the web. We start from the P&R off of Route 15 at Dumfries Rd/Colonial Rd NOT downtown Warrenton. Directions are on the web under ride start locations. We will hit a little traffic on Rt 55 into The Plains, Rt 50 in Middleburg and Rt 50 again in Aldie but none of these are very scary. Lots of rolling hills, a few steep hills but no long climbs. Lots of opportunities for rest stops. If you would like a Google Earth Map of the route send me an email. No go if a significant amount of rain. Call if in doubt. Skyline Select-A-Size. During the dog days of summer, let's take some time to get above it all: above the sweltering temperatures, high on the hills of Skyline Drive, where things are always a bit cooler than in the rollers below. The "select-a-size" aspect refers to the out-and-back nature of this ride. Want to ride the full 100 miles? Go out to Big Meadows and back. Prefer 80? Skyland is your turnaround point. Lots of climbing on this ride, so bring your "chasseur des cols" legs - and bring $8 (or your season pass, if you have one) to enter Shenandoah National Park. Potential for as many as five rest stops, but leader will likely make his first stop at mile 40 or 50. Please bring a rear blinking light for the short tunnel after Panorama. Ride leaves from Eastham Park (a.k.a. Front Royal boat landing), just past the old high school (use the following URL for a Google Map of the location: http://is.gd/1xEXy). Any last-minute changes (posted by 5:45 AM) will be posted to PPTC forums and to Pedalers Google Group. Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.

Escape From Lorton Prison. This is a MOUNTAIN BIKE or hybrid ride around the land that used to be the Lorton prison farm, and it is more invigorating than the short distance of 10 miles suggests. Part of the route is Cross County Trail, which is pretty rough in this section; a large part is equestrian trail, which is stone dust and hard-packed; and another part is woodland trail, which is great when dry. Plan on a fun, roller-coaster ride and numerous short climbs. AND BRING PLENTY OF TICK REPELLANT. Meandering from Marshall. This is a moderate ride for those wishing to do harder riding on Sunday, and it also could be a good introduction to the CC category for STRONG "C" riders. Please note that there will be no sweep and the pace will be a true "CC" pace. The route features all elements of a good ride: rollers, a few long and hard climbs, fast straightaways, and beautiful countryside with minimal traffic for about 2/3 of the route. We will loop from Marshall west and north through the Plains, Halfway, and Middleburg over to our climbs on Snickersville Pike and St Louis Rd. We will return via Atoka and Rectorstown (the long, fast straightaways). Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] C: 571/332-2571.

The Blue Ridger. Let's beat the dog days of summer heat with this somewhat early departure on one of the classic climbing rides. The ride will take in the rolling terrain to Airmont and Bluemont before tackling the climb up to route 7. Then it's up the challenging but shaded Mt Weather climb. The rapid descent will take us all the way down to Paris, but we won't linger on the Champs Elysees. The last climb of the day takes us by local vineyards and up and over Naked Mountain before we finally attack the final rollers back to Marshall. Although this ride has plenty of climbing, much of it is in the shade. Since the ride leader will be coming off of her bone marrow draw, she will be leading the ride at a "B" pace. Rob and Brian will lead the "BB" riders and Barry will lead out the "A"s. (Perhaps there will be a slightly long option available.) Bring plenty of fluids as water stops are not guaranteed after Bluemont. For those interested, post-ride we can discuss what's Ailin Palin and figure out her political future. No go if raining at ride start. To check on go/no go decision based on wet roads or possibility of showers, check the PPTC Ride Forum. CC * 40-50 * MD * 8:45 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
Carol's Choice. I'm thinking about "Backwards Poolesville" from Scott and Jim's book, or adapting my own route. The ride will be primarily in the Ag Reserve because I like the shade, especially at the end of August. Mileage will be in the 40-50 range and I will make sure there are distance options. 8:30 seems early; 9 late, so we'll roll out at 8:45 sharp!

The Nowhere Ride. Let's save our legs for Tim's ride on Sunday. This is a relatively flat ride from Laytonsville that runs thru Lisbon between two and three times. BB/ATB(H) * 61 * VA * 9 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL)
Up-west and Off-Pavement. I led this last summer and three us had a great time. Lots of shade on this route. 45% is off paved roads, but rideable on 28-34c smooth tires. Bring your mountain bike if that's all you've got. We head out of Gainesville "Up-West" to Upperville, but travel many one lane, dirt roads, including Bust Head Rd from Rt 55. Coming back from Middleburg we take Bull Run Mountain Rd over Bull Run Mountain. Nice climbs on dirt roads. (We'll re-group at the bottom of them.) Last year this ride felt like 85 miles, so if you're looking for distance and hills come on out. Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbm<>verizon.net] H: 202/543-8005 or 202/834-9309.

Hills, Mills and Turkeys (paved/unpaved). Amissville makes a great ride start because we ride in an area that "CC"s rarely get to see. We'll visit Little Washington for a tour, ride some hills, train for the Club Century, and maybe get a peek at the dromedaries. NOTE: there are some unpaved sections that are really more dirt than gravel and suitable for road bikes with appropriate caution; also, we can just walk our bikes there if we choose. We're starting early in anticipation of a hot day. Please come prepared with plenty of water/drinks. Any questions at all, please contact the ride leader. SkyMass. We've all been working way too hard, so take a day off to come do a bike ride! And not just any bike ride, this is SkyMass! It's hilly, it's beautiful & it's fun. I'm giving you over six weeks to fully notify the powers to be that you will not be at work that day. I plan to ride a "BB" pace (or at least a "BB" effort), but other ride classes are welcome. The first 21 miles are mostly uphill, then you get a flat to downhill 20 miles into Luray. After that, you climb Massanutan, and get a fun 35 miles back thru the valley. Remember to bring money to get on Skyline (I think $8). Also, if the weather looks doubtful that day, I will post on the google site & the forum by 6am if I decide to cancel. (Directions: Rt 123 / Ox Rd at Lorton Prison just north of the Occoquan River; park in the north end of the Arts Workhouse lot.) Questions? Call either ride leader. Summit Cum Laude. (In memory of the late TV pitchman Billy Mays.... ) Hello, Chris Ross here, for Summit Cum Laude, the classic climbing ride created Brent DeRobertis with Kelly Smith. You may have tried other climbing products in the past and been dissatisfied with the results - not tired afterwards, still able to stand, still able to talk.... The ride includes climbs of both Mt. Weather and Naked Mountain. But wait, there's more! You also get an ascent of Blue Mountain at no extra cost (except to your legs). Just think - that's an extra 1500' of cramp-inducing switchbacks, half of it on gravel. Most other climbs don't give you any gravel! This offer is not available from other bike clubs or local touring companies. Many people travel all the way to Europe to challenge themselves like this, but you don't have to. Why struggle to get a bike past airport officials who act like you're traveling with a canoe, or pay an additional first class fare for your bike, only to have it ride in the cargo hold where it can't watch DirectTV or see the wine list? Alberto Contador has announced that nothing would make him happier than kicking Lance's butt on this route. Cadel Evans has said that if he had only been able to train on routes like this he wouldn't have finished second in so many grand tours! Ride not available under all weather conditions, namely in rain or on wet roads. Size of gravel may vary. Batteries not included. If you have any questions please contact the ride leader for terms and conditions. Chris Ross [ross3ca<>verizon.net] C: 703/517-4414.

Between The Rivers. The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and one CaptainCuster who distinguished himself at Kelly's Ford. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. rides

I'm new to the PPTC and am mainly interested in mountain biking. Maybe I'm missing something, but I scanned the August rides and didn't see one "ATB" ride. Thanks for comments.

MTB

PPTC doesn't do much for mtb. Try MORE at more-mtb.org they (we) are the main mtb club in the area. the website has rides though lately not many people are posting weekend rides, but there will be some.

see Aug 22nd

There is one ATB ride. It's not mountain biking, but it does go over a few hills on dirt/gravel roads. It's a fast ride. I've tried to convince the strong riders to come out on heavy mountain bikes to even things up a bit.

Check this club out for mountain biking: http://www.more-mtb.org/index.php
