C * 17 (MF) * VA * 6 PM * South Run Recreation Center * 50%
South Run Burke Lake Occoquan Loop. Little traffic and lots of shade! This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a shaded bike path. Then we cycle along the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. We double back - and after an energizing climb - return on neighborhood streets and another shaded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sounds of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. RIDE START: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield, Virginia. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. Len Wilkinson (len.wilkinson@verizon.net) H: 703/455-0368 C: 703/350-9209 or Teri Larriva 703/644-0884 or 703/629-8847.
BB(H) * 30 * MD * 6 PM * Brooke Grove ES
Mid-Week Rambler. Up-tempo hilly ride up Highland to Triadelphia, and back through the Chapels (Jennings & Howard). This is the old Sandy Spring Trainer Ride, moved to a new start/finish location(so the ride leader can bike to the start without white-knuckling it on Rt 108). (Directions: 2700 Spartan Rd, Olney, MD. Coming from Georgia Ave on Rt 108, turn left at the light onto Spartan Rd.) Glenn Wortmann [glennwortmann@verizon.net] 301/570-3046.

B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast. This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
July -- Fridays
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)

NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.
CC+ * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from CC on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. Note: ride leaders may change from week to week and/or chosen from the "regulars" in attendance. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. July 4 Friday
CC * 35 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
No Foolin Another Way To Orlean. This is a slightly hilly ride including Piney Mountain Road to Orlean for a snack and bathroom stop at mile 18. No go in rain or wet roads. Cell only on day of ride, please. Roger Cubbage [jwcubbage@juno.com] C: 703/447-7169.
CC * 42 * MD * 9 AM * Lackey HS (LAC)
Around Maryland Point: Follow the Leader. We'll be using Anne Brown rules* (no drops, no cue sheets) and we might just show you a new road or two. It's a quiet, scenic route with a lot of shade, and there'll be three rest stops at stores. Wearing of the red, white and blue encouraged. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. It's regrettable that "group" rides are typically not really group rides at all, but just so many individual riders following the same cue sheet, each at his or her own pace--that pace being usually much faster than the official "CC" pace. To provide an alternative, we will lead a ride without cue sheets, thus encouraging attendees to "follow the leader." One of us will sweep, ensuring that no one will be dropped. Steve Palincsar [palincss@his.com] 703/548-1585 Jim Houghton [houghtonjf@hotmail.com] 703/266-2209.
CC(MH) * 35/40 * MD * 9 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV) * 40°/40%
Ride up to Lisbon in Howard County. Same ride as 6/29/08 but the shorter option will allow you to be back in the afternoon for picnics or other July 4 activities. Nice Howard county terrain with rolling hills. I will not ride in the rain. Call the morning of ride if the weather is doubtful. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515 or 301/828-5257.
B (MH) * 72 * MD * 8 AM * Bollman Bridge ES (BOL)
Six County Ride. From Savage (Howard County) the ride heads north to Ellicott City and into Baltimore and Carroll Counties. After traversing more of Howard County the ride goes through the reservoir to Montgomery County and back via Prince Georges and we just touch Anne Arundel Counties. I am still working on the route but I am leaning toward three rest stops since the first one is only 14 miles from the start. There are no facilities at the start and food/rest rooms are few on the route in order to stay on low traffic country roads. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.
BB * 30-40 * MD * 6:15 AM * Sherwood ES (SES)
Early Fireworks. I hope that at least one person will join me at 6:15 AM on July 4th. But I will welcome anyone that wants to finish up early! You will certainly be back in time for any pool festivities or neighborhood parades with the family. Wear your favorite Red, White & Blue jersey. I will put together a 30-40 mile cue sheet with some rolling hills in Howard County. Rest stop depends on the mileage. I will ride a leisurely "B" - "BB" pace. No go in rain or on wet roads. Email with questions. Nancy Kotarski [Nancykotarski@comcast.net] .
A/BB * 68 * MD * 8:30 AM * Damascus HS (DAM)
Have You Ever Been to Libertytown. Well, we all went up to Libertytown & got soaked at the end of May. Let's give it another try, but this time we hope to stay dry. What better place to be on July 4th than Libertytown; sounds sort of appropriate for the holiday. We'll start in Damascus, then wind our way to My Airy, then on to Libertytown & finally back to Damascus. I'll try to show you a few roads you've never been on. Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.

CC * 42 * VA * 8:30 AM * Boyce ES
Boyce, Berryville, and Beer!. This is part 3 of 4 in the ongoing saga of my Boyce rides. For sure it will be hot, so there has to be a payoff for riding at a weird time so far from home. At this point, we will be experiencing the Virginia countryside in its summer finery: acres of fields of high corn, new animals peacefully grazing, and a ride that's just the right length for a mid-summer's weekend. On truly rural roads, we loop from Boyce northward into West Virginia, returning via Berryville on paths known to one and all as part of the Club Century. This is not a hard ride (there is only one difficult climb), and we have a rest stop at the 9-mile mark and one at 30 miles. HERE'S THE PAYOFF: AFTERWARDS, for the willing, we'll be driving over to Upperville's Hunter's Head Tavern for the best in British pub food and really good beers. (Directions to Boyce ES: from the Beltway / I-495, west on I-66 about 40 miles to exit North at "Rt 17 / Delaplane" (after Marshall), go to the T at Rt 50, West/L on Rt 50 for 9 miles to first TL(Sheetz, potties), right on Rt 340 for a few miles into Boyce, turn L at the blinking light onto Rt 723, and then in 0.2 mi turn L into the school parking lot).Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] 571/332-2571.

There is an option for 51 miles (and almost 300 more ft) if you can't resist. Helmets required. No go in rain or wet roads. Carol Linden C: 240/205-5035.

D/C * 26 * MD * 10:30 AM * White's Ferry (WIF)
Whites Ford Splash & Ride. This ride has a unique feature: an optional river crossing on foot. Bring your sports sandals if you would like to cross the Potomac at White's Ford (3 miles upstream from the ferry), which was an important river crossing during the Civil War, in particular before the battle of Antietam and on July 15 in 1864, after Jubal Early's "raid on Washington." The river is only about knee-deep at the ford, and should be a nice way to cool off on a hot July day. The bike ride itself is on the towpath to Point of Rocks and back, shaded the whole way. Hybrid or ATB tires are best, but the path is in pretty good condition and can probably be managed on a touring bike. Point of Rocks will be a good place for lunch, but you may want to bring a sandwich, because the country store in town does not offer much variety beyond sodas and snacks. Mike High 703/597-7912.

The short route skips the museum and goes straight to Morris Point. It's gently rolling terrain, a scenic mix of former tobacco farmland and watermen's country, with a return through the Amish community near Thompson Corner Rd. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. A Frugal Century From The Pricey City. Since the purchase of petrol requires collateral, a note from mom, and putting the kids and pets in hock, why not ride a full century from the heart of DC? No joke - it's real! I did this ride last year, and those who showed loved it - why not try it yourself? The ride takes little time getting out of the city, then sweeps through Potomac and Seneca on the way to Poolesville. From there, it take a playful romp around the flanks of Sugarloaf before aiming back toward DC, making the grand re-entrance via Rock Creek Park. Terrain is rolling, with no long hills but a few steep stretches. Two or three stops along the way for needed refreshment (bring cleat covers for the Poolesville stop). No go in steady rain - if rains cancel on Saturday but Sunday is clear, this leader will do the ride on Sunday (such the contrarian I am). Any last-minute changes will be posted to the PPTC forums and the Pedalers Google group. Please be green and either ride your bike to the start or carpool! Gandhi Statue is at confluence of Q St, 21st St and Mass Ave NW, one block west of the Dupont Circle Metro stop. Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] 860/869-7610.

C/CC(MH) * 38/55 * VA * 9 AM * Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park * 95°/50%
Always A Tailwind. This interesting ride takes us through the tranquil countryside around Nokesville on several new roads and some familiar ones. Traffic is light, and the route is flat for many stretches with mild ascents (ouch) and breezy descents (WHOOPEE!!) The long route has a few new and very interesting roads and even 2/10ths of a mile of gravel - it is well packed and slightly uphill, so it is still okay with skinny tires. (Don't fret it.) Total ascent for the shorter route is about 2,500 feet over 38 miles or 65 feet per mile. The longer route has a few more hills, but my bike s Garmin was not working so I can t give you the stats. The Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park is open to tour after the ride. Rest stops include the ever convenient store in Bristerburg, but facilities may not be available at ride start. (Directions: 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA, immediately adjacent to Brentsville Presbyterian Church. Please use GPS, Mapquest, or similar for directions from your home.) Questions? Southern Loudoun Rustic. On Earth Day several years ago, I heard a local historian say that Loudoun County has more miles of unpaved roads than any other county in Virginia. What better way therefore, to truly experience Loudoun than to ride as many of those gravel roads as possible. This new, rolling-to-hilly, 34-mile loop in the southwestern part of the county explores 28 miles of those rustic gems, resorting to pavement for only 6 miles. And if getting to Bluemont Store for a mid-ride snack isn't important to your riding pleasure, the amount of paved road you need to ride can be cut in half. Get out your bike with the wider tires and a good granny gear (and maybe even fenders), and come enjoy some roads you may never yet have ridden. Gunther's Impromptu Challenge. We will seek out every hill we can think of in Montgomery County. We'll ride out as far as Seneca but our biggest effort will be to keep a true "B" pace (that is an average of no more than 16 mph) and to bring along the slower members. (Directions: Quatermaine's is at the corner of Woodmont Ave and Elm St in Bethesda, MD 20814. It is a block away from the "end" of the Capitol Crescent Trail at Bethesda Ave.) Gunther Stern [gunther@gmcgt.org] 202/631-2323.
BB * 68-70ish * VA * 8:30 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Mount Weather's Backside. Yesterday was riding south of Marshall; today it's north. Rained out in April so I'll try again. This ride starts out as the Blue Ridger but skips riding along the ridge in favor of running south along the Shenandoah to Rte 50. After Howellsville, the return is the same as on the Peach Picker's ride (i.e. flat) *or* you can climb over Blue Mountain Rd for a challenge (uphill unpaved) which I've yet to take. And, if you are bored with the usual return along Rte 55, I'll cue the side trip on Old Sage to take in the "Stone Wall Built By Giants" (includes a very short unpaved section and a really nice descent). Rest stops in Airmont and Howellsville. No go in rain or on seriously wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] C: 571/232-0164.

Knock, Knock Knocking on the President's Door. A superb Catoctin climbing ride with shorter and longer options. We will head up shady Catoctin Hollow Road followed by the always shaded, and somewhat steep, Park Central Road climb in Catoctin National Park. There are some fun descents to remove leg knots and an obligatory stop at the Thurmont Sheets to discuss the similarities between Park Central Road and Stelvio Pass, Haleakala, Galibier and other notable road climbs. Consider relaxed gearing if you are new to climbing or like to spin a bit on the way to the top. The early start is to get the climbs under the legs before afternoon heat sets in. Between The Rivers. The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and one Captain Custer. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. "Now, of my three score years, my friend, twenty will not come again, And take from 50 springs a score, It only leaves me 50 more" (paraphrased). John Wannen [john@wannen.com ] C: 202/374-1523.
CC * 34/44 * MD * 9 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
Toolin' Around Poolesville. As I write this description, I am totally disorganized but I have another 5 weeks to get together before I do this ride. Although, in the meantime, I'll have gone to Seattle and Portland and will also have hosted the Shenandoah ride. Hope I'm not taking on too much. Well I'm sure the ride will be beautiful because the whole point of riding out in Poolesville is that it's beautiful. It'll go all the usual places and will stop at the Dickerson store. The day will be fabulous with low humidity and a gentle breeze. All the attendees will follow all the rules of the road and will be lots of fun to hang out with. I'll be at the back because I always am. That seems like enough description. Call me or email me if you need more, however. I don't obsessively check my email on the weekends so call if it's super important or actually raining that morning (in which case I'm not going on the ride but call anyway if only to chat.) B * 46ish * MD * 8 AM * Fulton P&R
Birthday Ride from Fulton. A mile for every year - should be a 29 mile ride then, right!??! Come out and enjoy what will hopefully be not too hot of a day. Bathrooms located in the BP Station in the Maple Lawn SC. No go in rain or if roads are wet. (Directions: Fulton P & R is on MD 216 just west of US 29 in Howard County. The entrance to the parking lot is in front of a large building with the word "GRACE" on it. From the Capitol Beltway take US 29 north to MD 216 west, P&R entrance is on the left. From MD 108 east take MD 216 south, P&R entrance on right shortly after you pass Lime Kiln Rd.) Jay and Jeanette Howard [Jeanettehoward@verizon.net] 240/271-7001.

Reston Rambler. A short, close-in recovery ride. Ride to the start for more miles and save money on gas. This will be an easy spin ride, whatever pace you feel like. Finish in less than two hours or make it three. Rest stop at mile 23, relax, talk about yesterday's hills or heat, or skip it and finish early. Check w/leader, the listserver, or PPTC Rides forum if the weather looks questionable. (Directions: Drivers on I-66 heading west or east to Vienna should look for the Rt 243 / Nutley St & Metro station exit (#62), and follow directions to the Metro and north parking. (Cf. www.stationmasters.com / System_Map / VIENNAST / viennast.html) If you're coming by bike on the W&OD Trail, turn south on Park St (away from VCCenter) and go to the 4th R (about 1/2 mile), onto Tappawingo Rd; follow this across Cottage St (SS) to the 2nd L, onto Frederick St, and take this 2 blocks to go R at the T onto Marshall Rd. Marshall will lead you across Nutley St at the light onto VA Center Blvd into the Metro parking area. Westbound riders might have a quicker connection to Marshall than reaching Park; check w/leader nearer to ride date for updated directions.)Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbm<>verizon.net] H:
