A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. B/BB * 31 * MD * 5:45 PM * Davidsonville Park n Ride (DPR)
Davidsonville Delight. Join Tina McDermott and Gang for our Thursday night friendly ride through the lovely rolling countryside. The first five miles is a nice warm up and then it's the question of who can make it to the top of Harwood Hill. The pace can range from 16 to 19 mph depending on who comes out and gets faster as the season progresses. This is a great training ride to help you get stronger for the weekend rides as well as learn good bike handling skills with pace lining and proper biking techniques. I hate the rain so don't even think that I'll be there for it. Tina McDermott [tinasbike@comcast.net] 410/570-5170.
BB-AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast. This long-running & social training ride has a bit of everything: a relatively flat first half, which offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work, yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. CC/B/BB/A * 18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social!. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. (NEW RIDE START: We'll change the ride start to just across the road from where we normally meet. We'll meet on the south-east side of the circle on Schaeffer Rd where there is a real bathroom and tons more parking!) Watch the speed cameras on Schaeffer Rd. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50o. Dinner afterwards is often an option and all are welcome. Between The Rivers. The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and one CaptainCuster who distinguished himself at Kelly's Ford. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. "Now, of my three score years, my friend, twenty will not come again, And take from 50 springs a score, It only leaves me 50 more." John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C: 202/374-1523.

Escape From Lorton Prison. This ride is a MOUNTAIN BIKE or hybrid ride around the land that used to be the Lorton prison farm. Plan on a fun, roller-coaster ride and some mild climbing. BRING TICK SPRAY/REPELLANT. (Directions: Rt 123 / Ox Rd at Lorton Prison just north of the Occoquan River; park in the north end of the Arts Workhouse lot.) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. Beach to Creek with Three-State Start!. A nice in-town ride with an emphasis on natural scenery. We'll ride up Beach Drive, through nice neighborhoods with some long hills, and down Sligo Creek Parkway. This ride invites ALL pace levels and naturally splits into smaller groups. The ride leader's pace is "C" or "CC"; a cadre of regulars know the route and will help those who are faster or slower. There will be no sweep. We'll regroup when we stop at the Takoma Park Co-Op for a quick bite. Start out with Leslie Tierstein in Virginia at 8:40 AM, start with Barbara and the main group at Pierce Mill at 9 AM, or wait at the pick-up point in Maryland at Candy Cane City for a 9:20 AM start. D/C (MF) * 17 * VA * 1 PM * Reston Town Center
Visit Udvar-Hazy Center Air and Space Museum. Another Ride-To-Eat production! Join us for a visit to the Smithsonian Institution’s Udvar-Hazy Center Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport, followed by dinner at Clyde's restaurant in Reston around 5:30 pm. The ride (8.5 miles each way) is primarily on flat and lightly-used asphalt bike paths (full disclosure: 3-5 short hills; and the two miles closest to Center are on extremely lightly used roadways). This is your chance to see this amazing facility without paying for parking. The Center houses the fastest jet ever built (the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane), the infamous Enola Gay, an Air France Concorde, the space shuttle Enterprise , and much, much more. The aircraft and space craft are displayed in huge hangers on the main floor, where visitors can walk among them, and a series of skywalks brings visitors nose-to-nose with vehicles suspended from the ceiling. We'll spend 2 hours at the Center (lockers available; bring a quarter). Please RSVP ASAP if you want to join a free 90 minute tour arranged just for our group. Also available are 30-45 minute IMAX movies about flight ($8.75 for first movie, $4.00 for additional movies; discount available for Smithsonian members); interactive 2 person F-4 Phantom flight simulators (choose pilot or gunner responsibilities, $8.00); and 8 person ride simulators (choose space walk, aerial combat, cosmic coaster, more, $7.00). We'll stop briefly on the return leg at the nearby Sully Historic Site Gift Shop to pick up those who want to spend less time at the Center. Leader rides a slow "C" pace. It would be wise to bring a helmet, water, bike lock, and money for dinner. If raining or wind greater than 15 miles per hour: ride is no go. Check the "Ride News" forum on the PPTC website for last-minute/cancellation news. [This ride is based on an article in the June 2009 Pedal Patter by Linda Schwarz. Many thanks, Linda!] DETAILED DIRECTIONS TO RIDE START: see PPTC website (if you cannot access the PPTC website, email the ride leader for directions well before the day of the ride). DETAILED DIRECTIONS TO RESTAURANT FROM THE RIDE START: Go down Library Street, take first right onto Democracy Boulevard, and stop in one block (at the corner of Democracy Boulevard and Discovery Street) near the bike racks. Public toilets, and Clyde's restaurant, are next to each other on your left next to the glass-domed Pavilion. Ron Trueworthy [Ron_Trueworthy@Yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.

Boyce, Berryville, and Brews. This is a great ride, and you will enjoy it. Also, this will be my third of three rides out of Boyce (but if there's sufficient interest, I'm sure I can be talked into a fourth one!). The ride is worth the drive, since the roads are (mostly) devoid of traffic, the terrain is (mostly) rolling and fast, and there will be brews and food after the ride at the venerable Hunter's Head Tavern in nearby Upperville. Please note: bring plenty of liquids because the first rest stop with full services is not until mile 30. Call 703/299-5175 the day of the ride no later than 7 AM for a pre-recorded go/no-go rain decision. If you need special help with directions, please call ride leader on cell phone. Harpers Ferry Excursion. Yes, we're starting early because of an anticipated hot day! This ride has lots of very rural terrain through lovely countryside, and hills that go with that description. Advance notice: it also has a couple of short sections on busy roads - which we've ridden with no problem and no complaints the past 2 years. We stop in Shepherdstown at the bakery and there are at least 2 other stores along the way. Please call or email if you have any questions (on morning of ride call only as ride leaders will not check email). The Hills of Ellicott City. I hate hills! Well, not as much as I hate wind. Hills do not change direction on me. These hills run the gamut from short and steep to long and not quite as steep. A fairly easy ride from Savage to Ellicott City and then we will do the loops including the seven hills of Ellicott City. As a bonus, we will take the Grist Mill Trail to Gun Rd. We will also venture up into Baltimore County on some picturesque roads that I have rediscovered. A rest stop is scheduled for Fisher's Bakery in Ellicott City. There are also a few coffee shops around for those needing a caffeine fix. Bathrooms and water not available at start. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.

Ada's Flint Hill Fling II. Perusing cue sheets in the library I came upon this one. It looks interesting and travels a few roads I haven't ridden--Resettlement and Hittles Mill Rds for example. The rest stop is in Flint Hill at mile 33. It's bound to be a pretty ride. Any ride that spends 5 miles on Leeds Manor Rd (& Crest Hill & ...) is a joy and it looks like this one covers the densely shaded and winding stretch south of Rt 55. Creek Crossings. Mostly downhill and always a tailwind. This fantastic ride out of Brentsville Historical Park uses some familiar country lanes and then goes south of Bristerburg on roads that PPTC does not usually frequent. There are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches and only a few hills, half of which I hate. (I hate only the uphill half; the downhill half is okay.) The short route ascends only 1,200 feet or a flat-ish 35 feet per mile. The long route ascends 2,600 feet or 50 feet per mile with two short, steep climbs after two creek crossings. Restroom facilities may not be open at ride start. Of six notable buildings at the Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park, the one-room schoolhouse is one of the few remaining in Prince William County. Ride start: Brentsville Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA, 20136, behind the Presbyterian Church. (Use GPS, mapquest or similar for directions.) Picnic and tour the site after the ride! Questions? Escape From Lorton Prison. This ride is a MOUNTAIN BIKE or hybrid ride around the land that used to be the Lorton prison farm. The route is part Cross County Trail, which is pretty rough in this section; a large part equestrian trail, which is stone dust and hard-pack; and part woodland trail, which is great when dry. Plan on a fun, roller-coaster ride and some mild climbing. BRING TICK SPRAY/REPELLANT. (Directions: Route 123 Ox road at Lorton Prison just north of the Occoquan River; park in the north end of the Arts Workhouse lot.) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. NCR Trail Picnic Ride. Come join us for a relaxing social ride under a beautiful canopy of trees on the North Central Railroad Trail north of Baltimore. The NCR Trail is a pastoral gem that runs almost flat along a small winding river through Gunpowder Falls State Park and then continues all the way to York, PA. It has a smooth, packed-stone surface suitable for all riders and most bikes. The ride starts at the Paper Mill Rd parking area on the NCR trail and proceeds 11 miles to the "New Wishing Well" inhabited by leprechauns warning "Violators will be Toad." On the way back, we will stop for a picnic break at Monkton where sandwiches and drinks are available if you need them. There are full toilets at Monkton and portable facilities along the trail every few miles. This is an up and back ride at an easy pace, so nobody will be left behind. Call ride leader that morning if weather looks doubtful. (Directions: Take I-95N to I-695N / Exit 49B - Baltimore Beltway to I-83N / Exit 24 going toward York. Meandering to Marshall. I can promise you one of the best routes I've seen for this mileage - rolling hills, stacked stone fences, beautiful horse farms and white-faced Herefords. If you don't enjoy Zulla Road, it's time to think about listing your bike on Ebay. There are two rest stops with stores and toilet facilities (one's a portable, but come on, this isn't Butterfield and Robinson). Then we finish in one of those full service towns. You know, the kind with good food and cold beer (Salamander Market). Sympathizers of all causes welcome. John Wannen [john@wannen.com] 202/454-.670 or 202/374-1523.

Twice Across the River without a Ferry. If Virginia is just not enough for you then how about adding a little bit of Maryland. This is an oldie but goodie. I think Dan Lehman was an early designer. We will visit Hamilton, Purcellvile, Hillsburo, Lovettsville, Brunswick. Petersvile, Jefferson, Point of Rocks, Taylorstown, and Waterfort. I only point out the names so that they ring a bell when you hear them on the TV weather reports. We get about 4,700 feet of climb and if you need more you can climb Taylortown and Sumptown hills adding about 3.5 miles and 460 feet of serious climbing. No go if a significant amount of rain. I'll post any weather cancelations on the forum prior to 7 AM the morning of. Ken Widmaier [Widmaier@verizon.net] 703/346-2864.

This ride goes over two of Frederick County's covered bridges, then heads into to Pennsylvania farm country on its way to Mount Saint Mary's college, the third covered bridge and back to Thurmont. Rural Pleasures. This is a very enjoyable ride along mostly flat to gently rolling back roads with a rest stop in Remington. Some V-E-R-Y long stretches of flatland with a few short easy climbs (and I mean easy) along the way. It's my absolutely favorite easy ride in Virginia. Meander In and Around DC. As usual, people are encouraged to initially load up on carbs and caffeine at Starbucks or the new Trader Joes before heading through DC's northwest back roads to some off-beaten tracks in Montgomery County. Davidsonville Surprise. Join Tina McDermott and Gang for a ride through Crownsville and then Gaylesville or maybe another location through the lovely rolling countryside. The first five miles is a nice warm up. It'll be a bit hillier than the Davidsonville Delight ride. If it's raining, Tina will there with queue sheets but might not ride. Three Blondes and a Bottle of Wine. - aka Blue Ridger Backwards from Barrel Oak. (Directions: Rt 55 between Marshall and Delaplane). Bring your climbing legs and a dish to share. Just a few miles outside Marshall we can sit under umbrella covered tables, gaze at the lush Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy everyone's culinary endeavors. Oh yeah, the ride - we have to do that first…climbs over Naked Mountain the hard way and Mt. Weather the easy way. If your quads are still alive you can paceline over the rollers back to Marshall at a pretty good clip. Since we are starting outside Marshall we may go over Maidstone, awesome views and less traffic, rather than stay on Rectortown Rd. Come hydrated with two bottles because the rest stop is in Bluemont after the two climbs. PLEASE park along the vineyard road after the split that goes up to the Winery. The restrooms at the Winery will be open before the ride! Try hard not to make me regret this request. Go to 2nd Marshall Exit, right off exit.
