South Run, Burke Lake and Mercer Lake . It is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a secluded bike path, then the bike path adjacent to Ox Road thru upscale neighborhood streets and return through a secret bike path along Lake Mercer. Directions: South Run Recreation Center (off the Fairfax County Pkwy at 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield, VA) We will meet and start behind the Recreation Center facilities (second building) - Continue from main parking lot to the gravel parking lot. This is where you will find the entrance to the biking path. If heavy rain, biking would be canceled. Otherwise, you can count on me. Woody Lipinski [woodylipinski@cox.net] 703/764-2702.
D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington . Starting June 10 (NO ride on June 3), join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). [P.S. -- Between 11 AM -- 12:45 PM you are welcome to join the Leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at the Italian Store in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a "C" pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining: lunch is at 11 AM; ride is no go.] Ron Trueworthy

We'll ride unless it's raining at start time. (Directions from the Beltway in Virginia: Take Exit 174 to the Eisenhower Ave Connector. R on Eisenhower Ave @ light. L into Cameron Run Park after 0.5 mile.) Please bring your helmets. Dan Stoltz [BikerDan1<>comcast.net] 703/684-5909 and Cynthia Priddy [diamrem<>aol.com] W: 703/926-2899 or 703/501-8525.

B/A/AA * 20-30 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park
Downtown Breakaway . Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark. Ride leaves promptly from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. Ride leaders of various speeds will be ready to lead each week according to availability. If you'd like to help lead, please contact one of the leaders.

B/BB * 20-30 * MD * 6:15 PM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Another Weekday Option . Whatever happened to this weekday ride? We will be riding into Howard County via Riggs, Zion, and Howard Chapel roads and coming back via Hipsley Mill Rd. B/BB(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead A ride below. The BEE leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the "A" riders; "BB"s do the entire route. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
A/AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). The plan is that the main group departs at 6:10 PM promptly, as any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (E.g., a 6:30 PM departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
June -- Wednesdays
C (MF) * 17/20 * VA * 6:XX PM * South Run Rec Center / Shirlington (SHR)
Alternate Wednesdays in Virginia . Two rides, alternating on Wednesdays, offer "C" riders and others a chance for evening cycling and socializing. See their particular listings under each Wednesday, below, for details. C. Ya There 703/FOR-BIKE.
B/BB/A * 25-35 * MD * 6:30 PM * Ivy Lane Office Complex (IVY)
Midweek Madcap . Come out and enjoy a mid week ride through the Ag Center and Old Town Bowie. Terrain is flat to rolling. There will be several routes to choose from with no rest stops. Choose the ride/mileage that will ensure that you get back to the ride start before it gets dark. No go in rain/wet roads. Jeanette and Jay Howard [Tucohoward@comcast.net] 240/271-7001.
BB(MH) * 28 * MD * 6 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station (near-SES)
Sandy Spring Trainer . This ride is a midweek trainer, i.e. expect some up-tempo riding. The route will consist of moderate hills on familiar roads in Montgomery and Howard Counties. Please note the location. (Directions: The fire station is less than one-quarter mile from Sherwood ES (SES). From the elementary head east toward Sandy Spring (away from Olney) on Rt 108. Go through one light and make the next left on Brooke Rd. The fire station is set back from Rt 108 about 100 yards on Brooke Rd.) Call if weather is questionable. Bill Anderson [bjkanderson AT verizon.net] 301/570-7704.
A(MH) * 28 * MD * 6 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station (near-SES)
Sandy Spring Trainer . Expect a good work-out traversing the many hilly roads of the area. We'll try to hang together (strong riders can repeat part of a climb). Call if the weather's dubious. The Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Station 4 is located at 17921 Brooke Road in Sandy Spring, MD 20860 - (off of Rt 108 Between Sherwood ES and Sherwood HS). Alan Muldawer [Alan AT Muldawer.com] 301/996-2526.
June -- Thursdays
C/CC(MH) * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Socially Acceptable! . Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle. Route varies each week. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! Join the group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma Street. Ride leaves promptly, and parking on Yuma is usually no problem. No go if raining or wet roads. Call ride leaders for more info. Get your weekend riding started here! Reggie Beard 240/899-4391 or Steve Brickell 301/946-2520.
B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10 PM, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113 and Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 to 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
June -- Fridays
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to keep us awake. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.
CC/C * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! A slightly earlier start to encourage a socia pace...all the better for llama and cow gazing. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. Don't shy away if you can't make the "official" start time; come later and cut the ride short (cue sheet always on ride leader's car), meeting us in the parking lot by dusk to talk about where dinner will be. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. There is no sweep because of varying route lengths, but ride leader will make an effort to encourage group togetherness. Brenda Ruby [pptc_cc_riders@yahoo.com] C: 301/602-4683 Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600.
BB/B * 25 * MD * 6:30 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:30 Rural Rumble! Same ride as above with a later start to accommodate (encourage?) the speed demons among you. You know who you are so come and be in your element. Bill Hermz [bhermz@yahoo.com] and Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600.
June 2 Saturday
D * 15-20 * VA * 10 AM * Bull Run MS, Haymarket
Lunch at The LeGrange . First, we will do some street loops in the communities of Piedmont and Heritage Hunt, and then we will be off to the newest winery in VA "The LeGrange." Bring along whatever victuals you like to have washed down with great wine, (the winery does have cheese and crackers for sale and the selections are usually enough for two). The communities we will be riding in are quiet wide streets, but the five miles out of Haymarket to the winery are on busier roads so you should be comfortable with riding with cars and occasional trucks. The winery is accessed by Rt 55 and Antioch Rd out of Haymarket, both are common to many local and PPTC routes, so these are roads that do have a bicycle presence. Terrain is flat to mildly rolling hills. (Directions: Follow the direction to Gainesville Tyler ES (TYL) via I-66, except you will turn right at the light just before Tyler elementary onto Catharpin Rd. The school will be in about 1.5 mile on the left. If you are approaching Tyler on Rt 55 from the west (through thetown of Haymarket), you would drive past Tyler School and turn Left at the next light, Catharpin Rd and proceed to the start as per above.)Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net ] 703/743-5062.
C * 33 * MD * 10 AM * Marley Station Mall (MSM)
Ride to the Beach . Come bike along the B & A Trail (and other roads), to a beautiful beach on the bay in Sandy Point State Park. Be prepared to go for a swim if you really want to cool off on the middle of the ride. See great views of the Bay Bridge. Easy for a 33 mile ride! Enough stops for drinks even if it is a really hot day. Scott Zelazny [scott_z@myrealbox.com] 410/525-2591.
C * 40 * VA * 9 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot (WAR)
Rappahannock River Valley . One of my favorites; a nice flattish ride through Remington and Midland. Bring food with you; I'm not sure of the availability of stores on this ride. Kathy Stoner 703/718-0890.
CC * 65/70 * MD * 9 AM * Oak Ridge Park
Cobb Island Adventure . A scenic Southern Maryland tour of Chapel Point, the Booth Escape route to Pope's Creek, and down to Cobb Island. We'll have lunch at a restaurant on the Neale Sound, followed by an optional 5-mile tour of Cobb Island, returning via Mount Victoria Rd, Allen's Fresh and the Amish area. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. [Directions to Oak Ridge Park: From Beltway take Rte 5 south (exit 7A), turning left in Waldorf to remain on Rte 5. Turn right onto Oliver's Shop Rd, left onto Oaks Rd, follow to Oak Ridge Park on the right. Note: if you are unfamiliar with this area, please call or email to clarify directions prior to the day of the ride, or see: http://tinyurl.com/g3k9f for directions.] Steve Palincsar [palincss@his.com] 703/548-1585.
CC (MH) * 40 * VA * 8:30 AM * Burke VRE Station (BVR)
Where the Heck is Annandale? . This ride takes runs through several neighborhoods in Annandale and North Springfield, returning along mostly lightly traveled roads. Call the ride leader on his CP the morning of the ride if weather conditions are doubtful. Emil Regelman [regelman.emil@gmail.com] 703/323-1313 or 703/915-3355.
B * 40 or 29 * MD * 7 AM * Sherwood ES (SES)
B&BvB . Beat the heat & Balance family v. Biking by joining us on a relatively short and relatively early ride that will get you home in time for those pesky non-Biking demands life makes. The ride leaders will lead the 40 mile ride, but offer a shortcut for a 29 mile version for those who need to hurry home. Both rides offer lots of short ups and downs but no epic climbs, some good long flattish stretches and beautiful countryside so everyone gets a great ride without leaving you wrecked for the day. Nothing but a typhoon will keep us home, and we'll try to get up early enough to have some coffee at the start to help you get going. Nancy Kotarski [nancykotarski@comcast.net] and Eric Pilsk [epilsk@gmail.com] C: 240/893-3499.
B/BB(H) * 61 * MD * 9 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Up Gambrill We Will Go . Bring you climbing gears and legs for this ride. "BB"s and others are also welcome. After a relatively flat start, we get tortured going up Shookstown Rd then continue the climb up Gambrill Park Rd. We follow the ridge, then after one mile of a slow, narrow, winding downhill, the road opens up so that 50 mph is a possibility. Next we turn our attention to suffering up HARP HILL. After descending Harp we can rest in Wolfsville--hopefully the store will be open, but you never know so bring plenty of liquid. Leaving Wolfsville, we climb by way of Foxville-Deerfield Rd. before the long downhill to Thurmont. The remainder of the ride is on rolling terrain over familiar roads, but tired legs may require more than the usual effort. There will be an optional rest stop in Wolfsville at mile 21, and a rest stop in Thurmont at mile 36. No go if it is raining or roads are soaked. If I am feeling kind, I may bring an option to avoid Harp Hill and eliminate 3 miles. Jeffrey Anspacher [janspacher@hotmail.com]301/775-5803 andKaren Berlage 301/963-1482.
A(H) * 27(35) * VA * 7:35 AM * Clarendon Metro area
CSC Invitational (Clarendon Cup) . A day at the races. Meet at the corner of Washington and Wilson Blvd.s in Arlington, across the street from the Silver Diner. We meet up around 7:35 AM. We will leave at 7:45 AM Sharp. They have done the races different this year, so the ride needs to be done earlier to watch the women's race. The route will do the usual Hills in Arlington. We should get back around in time to watch the Women's race. Ideally one would bring some extra clothes to change into to watch the races, eat food, and buy cycling stuff (some great deals on this!). For more information: www.arlingtonsports.org/home.html or www.cscinvitational.com. Darren Biggs [ou98dtbiggs <> gmail.com] 571/242-7276.

CC * 40 * VA * 11 AM * The Plains (PLA)
Excursion to Three Fox Vineyards . This is a paved companion ride to the Fauquier Rustic paved/unpaved ride starting in Marshall that Tom Roberson has orchestrated. Please note that this ride starts in The Plains. We will meet up with the folks from the other ride at one of the smaller local vineyards in Delaplane for our lunch/rest stop at 16.5 miles. Three Fox Vineyards has terrific grounds with a huge meadow with scattered tables and hammocks, some on the edge of the stream about 300 yards down the hill. The Vineyard produces remarkable Italian Tuscan style wines. The wine may be like Tuscany, but the route is pure Fauquier County Virginia with the typical rolling terrain of this area. Except for the winery entrance there are no really steep rises or long climbs. Be sure to take advantage of bathroom facilities on your way out as you pass by Haymarket, as there are none at the start. If you want to buy food to take to the winery, arrive early enough to get something from the nice folks at the Farm Market (on corner across fromthe service station, good sandwiches) or bring your own. The winery also has some food available in the way of cheeses, etc. If you plan to participate in the wine tasting ($4.00), please RSVP by Saturday afternoon to Tom Roberson, 703/743-5062, or email roberson3084@comcast.net. Check www.weather.com and search Delaplane, Virginia for weather conditions.Barbara Binder [bbinder743@aol.com] 703/385-9669 or 703/309-3757.
CC/ATB(H) * 37 * VA * 11 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Fauquier Rustic . Paved/unpaved excursion to Three Fox Vineyards. Visit, and lunch at, one of the smaller Virginia vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia, which produces remarkable Italian Tuscan style wines, and boasts huge grounds with tables and hammocks. The wine may be like Tuscany, but the route is pure Fauquier County Virginia, with unique unpaved county lanes combined with beautiful rolling paved roads. While there are no long hills, the hilly rating is deserved because of short steep rises you will encounter on the unpaved roads and including a steep rise at the winery itself. Bring food to go with the wine, or bring fruit and bread to go with cheese and sausage they have for sale at the winery. If you plan to participate in wine tasting ($4.00) please RSVP to leader by afternoon the day before. The winery likes to have a "heads up" on groups of 10 or more. Check www.weather.com and search Delaplane, Virginia for weather conditions. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062.
B * 32/40+ * DC * 9 AM * Key Park in Georgetown

TANDEM * 23/37/41 mi * MD * 9:30 AM * Smallwood State Park, Indian Head
The BBQ RIde . This ride through southern Maryland rewards your time spent driving to the start point with different scenery and long stretches of great pavement with few cars. The opening 10 miles feature rolling hills, but the ride flattens out in the middle stretch. Team Pastorick will provide a BBQ lunch in the park after the ride. This is a joint WABITS/CRABS ride. Bear and Bull . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a new and sometimes challenging ride out of Tyler ES to points north, thereby avoiding the long hill into The Plains. The ride includes country roads along woods and pleasant pastures. When Ed Kerr and I pre-rode the route on May 4, a bear was spotted at mile 13. Later, Ed had a stare-down with a bull calf that had escaped from the pasture. BOTH TRUE! Me, I did not try to out-distance either the bear or the bull, but I made a point of keeping Ed between me and the critters. (I didn't have to outrun the bear, only to ride faster than Ed.) The ride has many moderate hills but is also refreshingly flat in many places. One rest stop at 16 miles. Total ascent is about 1,900' over 34 miles or 55' per mile. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader before 8:30 the morning of the ride. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or 703/585-1238.

There's no more gravel on the route; it's all been paved. Joint ride with the "BB"s-maybe they'll treat us to lunch at Joe's afterwards? NOTE: Ride start is at the Park & Ride on the eastern edge of Warrenton, not at the usual municipal lot downtown.

Newbies on the Canal . The ride is aimed at members who are new to cycling, are not quite sure how to start and want to make friends to ride with in an unstructured way. It is intended to be very, very non-intimidating so no spandex shorts are required and we are even dispensing with the cue sheet! We'll ride north for an hour as far as people are able and then come back. We'll provide bagels and cream cheese for after the ride, if others want to bring something we can share at the picnic tables. Bring a water bottle, though, and anything else you might need to eat for the ride. Please arrive early to get your bike ready to go -- we'll try to leave on time. Helmets are required. Ride leaders are Sigrid Haines, past Chair of PPTC and Catherine Kitchell, the current Chair. No go in actual rain. A hybrid or mountain bike is best for this ride. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (local hero) Pub downstairs invites uswith outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. E-mail ride leader for the meaning of God or other answers to great riddles.John Wannen [john@wannen.com ] C: 202/441-5625.

Blue Ridger Backwards [regdiR eulB] . It appears that someone else has, like me, offered to lead the BR, so why don't we do it backwards for a change? That way the rest stop is immediately after the climbing instead of before. We can break at the store in Bluemont if it's open or just continue on to Airmont. No go in rain or on really wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [JSherman<>erols.com] C: 571/232-0164.

Happy Happy Pain Pain . Joint ride with the "B"s. I've had poor luck with the weather when I've lead this ride in May, so I'm trying it in June. This is a classic club ride with lots of climbing and a wonderful view from the top of High Rock. We'll wind our way thru Wolfesville into Pennsylvania, over South Mountain, then up Penn Mar and finally past the old Army base at Ft Ritchie. I'll bring along cue sheets for the shorter 55 mile version, as well as the truly abbreviated 45 mile version, but if it's good weather, why not spend all day on the bike? To make it a truly enjoyable day, we plan to entertain you during as well as after the ride. We'll bring along something to refresh you after the ride; probably watermelon. We'll put together 55 good miles and still get you home in time for whatever non-biking demands might have been scheduled for you. There will be plenty of shortcuts for those who need to hurry home. Only flood conditions will stop the ride, and we'll try to get up early enough to have some coffee at the start to help you get going.
