B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436 6128.

June -- Fridays

CC+ * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. Note: ride leaders may change from week to week and/or chosen from the "regulars" in attendance. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. CC * 55 * VA * 9:30 AM * Margaret M. Pierce ES (MPS)

From Annapolis we head up the B & A Trail and the BWI Loop to Arundel Mills for an ice cream break at Cold Stone Creamery. From there it is about ten miles back to the start. We'll ride at a moderate to slow "B" pace as my intention is to ride with someone, enjoy the day and not drop anyone doing a "B" pace (Around 14 mph). Bathrooms and water not available at start. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593 2539.

BB/A(H) * 80 * MD * 9 AM * Point of Rocks (POR)

CC * 42 * VA * 9:35 AM * Boyce ES, Boyce
Boyce and Berryville Forever . This is the second of four times I plan to lead this ride this year. The dogwoods and apple blossoms are gone, the summertime heat is beginning its annual assault (unless you're like me and it can NEVER get hot enough!), and all is right with the world. 'Tis the heart of biking season. This is my favorite ride. On truly rural roads, we loop from Boyce northward into West Virginia, returning via Berryville on paths known to one and all as part of the Club Century. If you've never done this ride before, it's magnificent and well worth the trek out to Boyce. This is not a hard ride: we have a rest stop at the nine mile mark and one at 30 miles. (Directions: from the Beltway (I-495), West on I-66 about 40 miles to exit North at "Rt 17 / Delaplane" (after Marshall), go to the T at Rt 50, West/L on Rt 50 for 9 miles to first TL (Sheetz, potties), right on Rt 340 for a few miles into Boyce, turn L at the blinking light onto Rt 723, and then in 0.2 mi turn L into the school parking lot). Early Bird . The first in a weekly series of early rides. To kick the series off, we'll work our way into Howard County on some familiar roads and be back before it gets too hot to mow the lawn. Ride leaders will ride the posted pace, but riders at any other level who don't need a formal ride leader are welcome. No go in steady rain; call after 6 AM if the weather is doubtful or if there were heavy storms the night before. Feel free to contact any of us with questions. Updates (if needed) will be posted to forum webpage no later than 6:15 AM on the day of the ride. BE GREEN. CARPOOL TO THE RIDE START. B/BB(H) * 58/61 * MD * 9 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Ip Gambrill We Will Go . Bring your climbing gears for this ride. All the difficult climbing is in the first 20 miles and it is very challenging. For those going on Bike Virginia, this will be great training. After a rolling start, we will go up Shookstown Rd then continue the climb up Gambrill Park Rd. We follow the ridge, then after one mile of a slow, narrow, winding downhill, the road opens up so that 50 mph is a possibility. We finish the downhill in the valley near Wolfsville. For those who want a bigger challenge, the 61-mile option includes HARP HILL. Leaving Wolfsville, we climb by way of Foxville-Deerfield Rd before the long downhill to Thurmont. The remainder of the ride is on rolling terrain over familiar roads, but tired legs may require more than the usual effort. If the store is open, there will be an optional rest stop in Wolfsville at mile 19 (21.5 on Harp Hill version), and a rest stop in Thurmont at mile 34 (36.5 if you ride up Harp Hill). No go if roads are wet. "B" Ride leader will be going at his own sluggish pace and will not look back. B: Jeffrey Anspacher [janspacher@hotmail.com] 301/775-5803 BB: Karen Berlage 301/963 1482.

Unpainted Country Lanes . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. Perfect for "C" riders who hate hills and "CC" riders who love a paceline. And yet there are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches. Traffic is minimal and the route hardly has hills. The ride starts at Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park. Of six notable buildings, the one-room schoolhouse is one of the few remaining in Prince William County. Total ascent is only 1,000 feet over 31 miles or a flat-ish 32 feet per mile. Rollin' to Orlean . A rolling ride from The Plains to Orlean and back through Airlie. Plenty of long stretches of smooth, rolling roads and one section (a quarter mile, I clocked it myself!) of hard-packed gravel on Cannonball Gate Rd. I led this ride in April and it was really pretty: rolling pasture upon pasture of green fields and black cows. Fine roads, some good hills but nothing really hard. The 46 mile route is gravel-free and parts company with the longer ride at mile 33. I'll bring an 8ish-mile extension for those who would like to tack on a few more rollers before the end. Shiftless Bums . A ride for those luddites who disdain the current trends in abundantly geared thousand dollar bikes, have renounced coasting forever, relish the simplicity of one gear, hate cue sheets and want to save some bucks on gas by doing a nice local ride. I plan to hit the WO&D early from the VCC and ride it out to Purcellville and back. Probably stop in Purcellville for a short mid-morning repast, lots of rest stops and restrooms along the way. If you have an abundantly gear bike you are also very welcome, but single speed and fixee riders on vintage bikes will be worshiped accordingly. Old Rag Views . A beautiful ride over some rolling to hilly terrain. Only one hill you would call a climb, but this ride is much up or down, with a few flat stretches. Start time is a bit later than normal this time of year due to the remote location of the ride start. Weather shouldn't be a limitation this time of year unless we have a good start to the hurricane season. Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727 0321.

Nick's Real Ride from the Real City . As I write this, the Pedalers mailing list has just hemorrhaged Liberal guilt about wasting gas on drives to far-away ride start points. So why suffer? Come follow me on one of Nick's classic routes out of the city out to the exurbs (and back). I'm thinking of the variation that heads out MacArthur (we'll take the Clara Barton parkway if we have enough riders), then out on River Road to Seneca. From there it's back to DC via Beach Drive and Rock Creek Park. You can cut the ride short by catching Metro around mile 50. No go in rain or wet roads. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. "Now, of my three score years, my friend, twenty will not come again, and take from 50 springs a score, It only leaves me 50 more." (paraphrased) John Wannen [john@wannen.com ] C: 202/374 1523.

Twice Across the River . Also known as Loop through Leesburg. A popular ride, the route starts with a short ferry crossing (bring $1) to Virginia, travels through Leesburg then lovely historic Waterford, and back into MD across the bridge. Plenty of ups and downs to keep us entertained. If we get torrential rains and the ferry is closed, we'll be prepared to bring some other Poolesville cue. No go in rain or on wet roads. Please wear helmets. Bill Loewe [loeweATcua.edu] 301/681-2648 and Sheila Harron [sheilaharATgmail.com] 301/681 2648.

Alexandria to Vienna . This mostly trail-bound ride begins south of Old Town and is one of the few club rides that start relatively close in, thus saving on the cost of gas! We will follow the Mt Vernon trail north through historic Alexandria, then upriver to Rosslyn where we will climb out of the Potomac River valley on the Custis Trail and then take the W&OD Trail to Vienna. I will stop at the venerable Vienna Inn for hot dogs, mahi tacos, or provisions. The ride turns around at that point, returning via the W&OD, Shirlington, Beverly Hills, and Old Town to the ride start. (Directions: I-495 / Beltway Exit 177 / "Rt 1 north, Alexandria / Mount Vernon"; very QR on Jefferson St just past the Liberty gas station; 3 blocks to R on South Washington St, which becomes Mount Vernon Pkwy; 4.7 miles to Collingwood Rd exit; QR on West Blvd; 0.5 miles to Collingwood Park on L. The Hills of Ellicott City . I hate hills! Well, not as much as I hate wind. Hills do not change direction on me. These hills run the gamut from short and steep to long and not quite as steep. A fairly easy ride from Savage to Ellicott City and then we will do the loops including the seven hills of Ellicott City. As a bonus, we will take the Grist Mill Trail to Gun Rd. We will also venture up into Baltimore County on some picturesque roads that I have rediscovered. A rest stop is scheduled for Fisher's Bakery in Ellicott City. There are also a few coffee shops around for those needing a caffeine fix. Bathrooms and water not available at start. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593 2539.

Anne Brown Rules: Follow the Leader (No Cues, No Drops) . We find it regrettable that our "group" rides are typically not really group rides at all, but just so many individual riders following the same cue sheet, each at his or her own pace -- that pace being usually much faster than the official "CC" pace. To give riders an alternative, we will lead a ride without cue sheets being given out until after the ride, thus encouraging attendees to "follow the leader." One of us will sweep, ensuring that no one will be dropped. It is our hope and expectation that these conditions, though undoubtedly deterring some from attending the ride, will encourage others, and contribute to a more "social" experience. Lost River Classic -- WOW . Way Out West (WOW) you'll find mountains, forests, babbling brooks, wildlife, (85%) sparsely traveled roads, historic furnaces, quiet, and climbs. It's worth the extra drive, now and then. With 8500 feet of climb, this ride is great training for the Mountain Momma or the Civil War Century. The ride starts on the western edge of the northern Shenandoah Valley, climbs over the ridge at Wolf Gap into WV, and then explores several valleys (and the ridges in between) in the George Washington National Forest and Lost River (WV) State Park. The shorter routes are out-and-back and 100% low traffic, so you can just turn around when you've had enough. The full route turns south into VA, comes back into the Shenandoah Valley with the waters of the Shenandoah's North Fork, and then skirts the west edge of the valley to return via the resort town of Orkney Springs. The cues (with pictures and notes on rest stops, elevation profile and ft/mi) are posted in the Cue Sheet Library. Longest distance between rest stops is about 25 miles. Riders will form groups and ride at their own pace. No go in rain, heat Index much over 100, or air index for above code orange (for Winchester, VA). Contact ride leaders on day of event if in doubt. George Moore [geocmoore<>aol.com] 703/304-4786 and Ken Widmaier [widmaier <> verizon.net] 703/608 2849.

Marshallian Demands . If you cannot make time for the magnificent Lost River Classic above by George & Ken, here's a closer-in & quite beautiful roller through Amissville, Laurel Mills, Washington, and Flint Hill. Wonderful mountain views. WARNING: THERE ARE TWO SHORT STRETCHES OF DIRT ROAD, including one very short steep part that some people choose to walk. The unpaved sections are on the gorgeous, Gid Brown Hollow; a short-cut avoiding the dirt is available for those who don't stray from asphalt. Two rest stops. Bear and Bull . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a rural ride out of Tyler ES to points north, thereby avoiding the long hill into The Plains. The ride traverses country roads alongside tranquil woodlands and pleasing pastures. When Ed Kerr and I originally pre-rode > the route in the spring of 2007, a bear was spotted at mile 13. Later, Ed had a stare-down with a bull calf that had escaped from the pasture. BOTH TRUE! Me, I did not try to outrun either the bear or the bull, but I made a point of keeping Ed between me and the critters. The ride has a few short hills but also is refreshingly flat or downhill in many places. One rest stop at 16 miles. No restroom at ride start. Total ascent is about 1,900 feet over 34 miles or 55 feet per mile. Questions? Call ride leader at home NLT 2 hours before ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Zap the Gap . A really fun route that goes through beautiful country with vineyards, farms, horses, and orchards. As many of you know, I (Deb) hate hilly rides, but after doing this one the first time last spring, I really loved it. It is beautiful, and the climb up the gap was long but not that steep. All that hard work at the beginning makes for a fantastic finish on VA Rt 55, with more than a couple of long downhill spins. The ride leaders may both do the 50 mile version, especially if it turns out to be a hot one, but the 61 will be available. Cue sheets (with directions to ride start) and some photos are posted on the PPTC Web at http://www.bikepptc.org/node/712 (longer versions and photos) and http://www.bikepptc.org/node/726 (shorter versions). "B" back home B-fore the rest of your family has finished breakfast. Spend a couple of hours on a Sunday morning riding through some of Montgomery and Howard counties. Sunday Revolution Redux . We'll ride out into the rolling hills of Montgomery County using some of the common cycling roads and lanes. We will go an honest "B" (I think) pace. I will try to keep everyone together but that has never worked. We will stop at lights and yield right of way! We will seek out every hill in Montgomery County with a trip down to Great Falls park just to come back up the hill. Back by noon. Call for info or if weather questionable. No go in the rain! If there is enough interest well try to do it on a regular basis so call me. (Directions: Park is located on Georgetown side of Key Bridge). Gunther Stern [gunther@gmcgt.org] 202/631 2323.
