B/BB/A/AA * 25 -40 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park
Downtown Breakaway. Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone - the division between "A" and "BB" usually happens closer to the return stretch, which most people (hopefully) know, though the cues are easy for said stretch. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark or make your evening date. Ride leaves from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. Parking in the neighborhood, but please be mindful of zone regulations, as ticketing crews are known to enforce as the ride distances lengthen. Leaders may alternate week to week, alternating according to availability. B: Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] 301/367-2430, BB: Mark Hemhauser[mbhhbm@verizon.net], A: Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] and Jonathan Mirsky [mirsky2207@hotmail.com] 202/320-1310.

BB * 31ish * MD * 6 PM * Davidsonville ES
New Deale. This is a "new" ride with mostly quiet roads and rolling hills.
We're hoping to draw folks from Annapolis to DC, and though our pace will
probably be closer to a moderate "BB", it would be nice to work on smooth pace
line technique, allowing for slower and faster pace riders to pull more or
less, according to ability, as well as breakaway (for those who just can't
sit!) and chase groups (to explore what a cohesive team can do). The focus
will be on enjoying the countryside and good pace line technique. About a 2
hour ride. (Directions: Rt 50. Exit Rt 424 south toward Davidsonville.
Go 3.3 miles and turn right on Rt 214. In 0.7 miles turn right into the
school.)
Stephen Szibler [sszibler@fastmail.fm] 202/483-4871
A(MH) * 28 * MD * 6 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station (near-SES)
Sandy Spring Trainer. Expect a good work-out traversing the many hilly roads of the area. We'll try to hang together (strong riders can repeat part of a climb). Call if the weather's dubious. (Directions: The Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Station 4 is located at 17921 Brooke Road in Sandy Spring, MD 20860 - (off of Rt 108 Between Sherwood ES and Sherwood HS).) C/CC * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Tenley Circle Ride. Meet the regular group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma street and ride with us every Thursday until the end of September. Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! No go if raining or wet roads. Let's get the season started! Paul Fegelson 202/966-8191 or Peter Herman 240/328-9092.
B (MH) * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast. This long running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups - with a punishing pace at the front. June 4 and 18: Kathryn Momot [Kathryn.Momot@nreca.coop] C: 703/200-3113 June 11 and 25: Brad Kuhn [bradkuhn@aol.com] 703/967-3544.
B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks. You are invited to join us in our season of evening cycling. As the year warms, we might be even more likely to ride when wet. See the Tuesday listing for further information. Peg & Bill Morris [BikeMorris57<>cox.net] PLS/NOT-CALL or Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
B/BB * 31 * MD * 5:45 PM * Davidsonville Park n Ride (DPR)
Davidsonville Delight. Join Tina McDermott and Gang for our Thursday night friendly ride through the lovely rolling countryside. The first five miles is a nice warm up and then it's the question of who can make it to the top of Harwood hill. The pace can range from 16 to 19 mph depending on who comes out and gets faster as the season progresses. This is a great training ride to help you get stronger for the weekend rides as well as learn good bike handling skills with pace lining and proper biking techniques. I hate the rain so don't even think that I'll be there for it. Tina McDermott [tinasbike@comcast.net] 410/570-5170.
BB-AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast. This long-running & social training ride has a bit of everything: a relatively flat first half, which offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work, yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups, with a punishing pace at the front. This ride starts at 6:30 PM through August. Brian Dixon 202/489-5247 (brian@popconnect.org) Todd Nedorostek [tnedorostek@earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
June -- Fridays
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 44-49°
Weekend Warmup. Join our crew for a casual "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with a few significant climbs. Plan on lunch after at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot and not across the street at Ivy Lane. If weather questionable - call cell after 8 am on day of ride. Harold's cell on day of ride: 202/997-2376. George Schneider gbs319@juno.com and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388.
CC/B/BB/A * 18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social!. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. NEW RIDE START: We'll change the ride start to just across the road from where we normally meet. We'll meet on the south-east side of the circle on Schaeffer Rd where there is a real bathroom and tons more parking! Watch the speed cameras on Schaeffer Rd. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50o. Dinner afterwards is often an option and all are welcome. CC: Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600 B: Bill Kokiko [bkokiko@hotmail.com] BB: Bill Hermach [whermach@mail.nih.gov] A: Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
June 3 Wednesday
C (MF) * 17 or 19 * VA * 6:15 PM * South Run Recreation Center * 95°/50%
Lake Loop and Margarita Party. This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a shaded bike path. Then we take one of two alternate routes to the bike path adjacent to Ox Rd. We double back and return on neighborhood streets and a bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sounds of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house.) After the ride there will be a party celebrating margarita season! The old margarita season will officially meet its demise shortly after the bike ride. (Sorrow and sobs!) Fortunately, the new margarita season will begin exactly 100 milliseconds after the end of the old one. Directions to the party will be handed out at ride start. Please bring a dish, preferably with something in it (ha, ha), to share. Rain date is June 17. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader on cell. C * 25 (MH) * VA * 10 AM * Gunston ES (GES)

Be prepared to climb hills and speed down them with part of the route going past the old Lorton Penitentiary in the latter half. Lunch afterwards at the nearby Polo Grill. Jeff Mankie [jsmankie@aol.com] C: 571/332-2130.
CC * 34 * VA * 8:45 AM * Loudoun County HS (LOU)
Abbreviated Waterford Wanderer. This beautiful rolling ride takes in Waterford (twice) and Taylorstown (don't blink), with a turn-around and rest stop in Lovettsville at mile 19 (bathroom at 7/11 if you're really nice and really desperate). Some might call this ride hilly. But we're not one of them, right? Leslie Tierstein [ltierstein - earthlink.net] 703/725-6579.
CC * 34/44 * MD * 9 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
Toolin' Round Poolesville. Enjoy the familiar roads of western Montgomery County with two distance options. You can make the big decision after the rest stop. Leader plans to do the longer option. This ride goes downhill on Big Woods Rd for a change of pace! No go in rain. Carol Linden [cdlinden@hotmail.com] 240/205-5035.
CC * 58 * VA * 9 AM * Boyce ES (BES) * 50%
Boyce and Berryville. This will be my second of three rides out of Boyce. I have led a shorter version of this ride over and over again, so most of you know the drill. On roads known to one and all as part of our Club's Century, we loop north from Boyce into West Virginia and then return via Berryville. The roads are quiet (for the most part), the terrain is rolling, the rural scenery is bucolic, and the weather should be fine. Call 703/299-5175 the day of the ride no later than 7 AM for a pre-recorded go/no-go rain decision. If you need special help with directions, please call ride leader on cell phone. Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] C: 571/332-2571.
B(H) * 58 * MD * 9 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Knock, knock, knockin' on the President's Door. There will be two big climbs between miles 12 and 24. The first climb, up Catoctin Hollow Rd, prepares us for the second and more difficult climb, up Park Central Rd and past Camp David at the top. After the spectacular second downhill we will rest and regroup at the Thurmont Sheetz at mile 32. The remainder of the ride is on rolling terrain over familiar roads, but tired legs may require more than the usual effort. If Park Central is closed due to the presence of the President, then we will go up the easier and shorter climb up Rt 77. No go if roads are wet. Jeffrey Anspacher [janspacher@hotmail.com] 301/775-5803.
B/BB * 40-60 * MD * 7 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Nancy/Drew Mystery Ride #060609. You see the mystery is we don't know what we are doing yet. But come on out and we will try and come up with a cue sheet with plenty of familiar roads, especially a mystery hill or two! Hopefully you've saved your cue sheet from mystery ride #51709. At least one rest stop. If you have extra time after the ride, join us for a snack at Pistachio's Cafe and Bakery at the end of the parking lot. The "B" ride leader will ride a "B" pace and lead from the rear; NCLB -- No Cyclist Left (too far) Behind. Riders at any level who don't need a formal ride leader are always welcome. No go in rain, wet roads -- or temperature above 95ø. Call after 6 AM day of the ride, if the weather is doubtful. Or check for an update on the PPTC website. Garmin users can e-mail nancykotarski@comcast.net for the .tcx file. BB: Nancy Kotarski [nancykotarski@comcast.net] 301/221-1057 B: Drew Malizio [amalizio@verizon.net] 301/237-7435.
BB(MH) * 58 * MD * 9 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Knock Knock Knockin' on the President's Door. There's a new sheriff in town, one who is perhaps more inviting to cyclists who would like to visit him at his Camp David retreat. We will roll out to the Catoctins and proceed up Catoctin Hollow Road followed by a descent down to Route 77. The more challenging Park Central Climb will take us up to Camp David for our first summit with the new President. If he is unable to see us, then we will take the easier and shorter climb up Rt 77. In either case, the descent down Rt 550 to Thurmont makes all the climbing worthwhile. Ride will be led out by Dr. Frank. With my gimpy knee in need of replacement and severe osteoporosis I'll be bringing up the rear. No go in rain. If weather or road conditions are suspect, check the PPTC forum for ride update information. Barbara Scott [bscottbike at yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
June 7 Sunday

North Beach Here We Come. Fantastic ride through rolling terrain all the way to my favorite rest stop at North Beach. Bring your smiles and your happy legs and I'll help you abuse them a bit on these pretty roads. I hate the rain but I'll be there with cue sheets for those who don't mind it. Tina McDermott [tinasbike@comcast.net] 410/570-5170.
BB/A * 101 * MD * 9 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Three Sheetz to Gettysburg. The ever popular flat way to Gettysburg and back. Great scenery, a quick tour through the battlefield, and three rest stops. Come on out and enjoy a classic PPTC ride designed by George Haas. We will not be doing a broad multi-class event as the parking lot cannot accommodate many riders. Please carpool if you can. Overflow parking is available at the Frederick Community College across the street. Be aware the school's field is used for youth soccer so there will be lots of competition for parking. Bring lots of water as the ride does not have much shade. This is absolutely a two water bottle ride. Tim Guilford, 301/704-2723.
BB/A (MH) * 65ish * VA * 9 AM * Loudoun County HS (LOU)
Widdershins Across the River. The reverse of Twice Across the River offers the climbs of Stumptown & Taylorstown (the easy ways), and MarLu (the hard way) before the rest stop. After climbing out of Brunswick back into Virginia, it's pretty much smooth sailing. There'll be a few miles on the W&OD to avoid the ever-busier but still narrow Bus Rt 7 between Purcellville and Hamilton followed by the fast finish down Dry Mill Rd. Note that there is the Cirque du Cyclisme, a show of vintage bicycles and assorted paraphernalia, at the Loudoun fairgrounds along our return, about two miles from the school. cf. www.cirqueducyclisme.com/schedule-of-events.html No go in rain or on really wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] C: 571/232-0164.

Plan to hang around, recover, eat and socialize at the end of the ride. Or bring the whole family to play in the park while you blast the hills. Bring a snack to share; cookies, fruit, horseradish, whatever. Bill Hermach [whermach@mail.nih.gov] 301/391-6114 Richard Kodl [richkodl@yahoo.com] 301/869-2218.

Meandering to Marshall. I can promise you one of the best routes I've seen for this mileage - rolling hills, stacked stone fences, beautiful horse farms and white-faced Herefords. If you don't enjoy Zulla Rd, it's time to think about listing your bike on Ebay. There are two rest stops with stores and toilet facilities (one's a portable, but come on, this isn't Butterfield & Robinson). Then we finish in one of those full service towns. You know, the kind with good food and cold beer (Salamander Market). Sympathizers of all causes welcome. John Wannen [john@wannen.com] 202/454-6701 or C: 202/374-1523.

Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Whether you're training for a big summer ride or riding just to train, this ride has it all. Four big climbs (Gapland, Hoffmaster, Reno Monument, and Mar Lu), plenty of rollers, some flats, plus great scenery. Several rest stops along the way, but the half-way rest stop will be at the Sweet Shop Bakery in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Ride will be led out by Steve with me following closer to the caboose. The PPTC train will be leaving the POR station at 9 AM. No go if raining at ride start. If weather or road conditions are questionable, check the PPTC Ride Forum. Lunch in Shirlington. Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet at 10 AM (except on June 7 when there is no Lunch in Shirlington ride) on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library / Signature Theater on Campbell Ave (formerly named 28th St South), Arlington 22206, to select a restaurant, then go to lunch at about 12 PM. See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 10 AM and 12 PM you are welcome to join the leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website, and passed out at ride). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow "C" pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more or fewer miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining or wind speed is greater than 15 MPH: ride is no go. Check the "Ride News" Forum on the Potomac Pedalers website for last minute cancelation information. Between The Rivers. The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and one CaptainCuster who distinguished himself at Kelly's Ford. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. "Now, of my three score years, my friend, twenty will not come again, And take from 50 springs a score, It only leaves me 50 more." John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C: 202/374-1523.

Twice Across the River. Also known as Loop through Leesburg. We got washed out in May so we're trying it again! A popular ride, the route starts with a short ferry crossing (bring $1) to Virginia, travels through Leesburg then lovely historic Waterford, and back into MD across the bridge. Plenty of ups and downs to keep us entertained. If we get torrential rains and the ferry is closed, we'll be prepared to bring some other Poolesville cue. No go in rain or on wet roads. Warrenton Wonderlust. A word of warning: this ride is far more hilly and challenging than most "CC" rides and many "B" rides. But it is also beautiful if you are physically ready for it. It's also great preparation for those wanting to do Bike Virginia, Bon Ton Roulet, or other multi-day events this summer. The ride loops northwest out of Warrenton to Orlean and covers portions of Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties. The "easier" 60-mile route turns north before the Culpeper area, while the longer ride loops as far south as the immediate Culpeper area and proceeds north through Brandy Station and Remington. Both rides feature an "interesting" and lengthy climb back into Warrenton from the south (after riding over 55 or 75 miles). After the ride, we are hoping for a late get-together at one of the fine establishments in downtown Warrenton. Please call any of the three ride leaders, if in doubt about the weather, no later than 7 AM the day of the ride for go/no-go decision. Down To the Bay. Predictions are for a beautiful spring morning, as we cruise to Galesville on this club favorite. This is a somewhat longer version than from the Park & Ride, still mostly back country roads, not too hilly, some rollers, with long level stretches. Rest stop at Waterfront Park in Galesville. We will have a medium fast pace line, though I try to keep the speed of the majority. As Staples Corner SC is small, there is additional parking 1/4 mile north on MD 424 at Crofton MS. Parking limit in SC is 20 cars. (Directions: From Beltway, MD 50 E toward Annapolis. Left on MD 424 / Davidsonville Rd and go 3 miles to intersection of MD 450. Turn right into SC. A completely out of the ordinary LAV launch that takes a rather circuitous meander through the urban jungles of Hyattstown, Ijamsville, New Market, and Mount Airy. Summer Solstice: Sunrise-Sunset. It's the longest day of the year (well technically the next to longest) and what better way to spend all those hours of daylight than tackling a Double Century. With over 15 hours of daylight and all day Sunday to recover, you know you can do it. We plan a straightforward out-and-back route north from Hains Point on mostly familiar and fairly flat roads through Potomac, Dickerson, Frederick and Thurmont before making the un-flat ascent up to PenMar High Rock. Once you summit, it is almost all downhill back to Hains Point, so it's a piece of cake, right? And if you don't feel like doing the full 200, just turn around at any point and head for the car. Although this is a self supported ride, with plenty of rest stops along the way, we plan to arrange for box lunches at PenMar. Accordingly, we are asking riders to RSVP by Thursday, June 18 and to pay for their share of lunch. With a start at dawn and the possibility of finishing after sunset, proper lights and reflective gear are recommended. If you are interested contact Eric Pilsk at epilsk@gmail.com. The route is generally rolling, but there are enough short steep rises and gully-dippers to qualify as a hilly ride. Touring bikes (700c and 650b), hybrids, cyclocross, and mountain bikes will all do; 700/28, 700/32, and 26X1.50 tires are recommended. Jim Houghton [houghtonjf@hotmail.com] 703/266-2209.

Mostly Flat and Always a Tailwind. This interesting ride takes us through the tranquil countryside around Nokesville. Traffic is light and the route is flat for many stretches with only a few ascents and breezy descents. The long route has new and interesting roads and even 2/10ths of a mile of gravel - it is well packed and slightly uphill, so it is still okay with skinny tires. Total ascent for the shorter route is about 2,500 feet over 38 miles or 65 feet per mile. The longer route has a few more hills but the terrain is much the same. Numerous rest stops along the way but your body should plan to start on empty as facilities aren't reliable at start or within 5 miles. (Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA, immediately adjacent to Brentsville Presbyterian Church. Please use GPS, Mapquest, or similar for directions.) Questions? Call me at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or after on my cell. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/350-9209.

Local Yokels Revised. We still visit Great Falls and McLean, but due to the relocation of one of the co-leaders we are now starting and ending in Vienna -- no, not Austria. This ride no longer goes through Arlington. Hey, there are just as many local yokels in Vienna as there are in Arlington to look at, maybe more. We still stop at the Sweet Stuff Pastry Shop and we have found a new place to have an after-ride treat, it just will not be Mom's Place. Kelly's Ford (short/long). With all the hilly rides of late, here's a chance for recovery over some relatively flat terrain. At press time, the exact route hadn't been chosen; and that might await determination of interest on the day, given weather & options. Call the leader or check the various forums if the weather is dubious. Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbm<>verizon.net] H: 202/543-8005 or 202/834-9309.
