November 2007 Ride Schedule

Weekday Rides

November -- Mondays

BB * 30ish * MD * 10 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. See November 12 description for Veterans Day holiday ride. No go in the rain or on wet roads. Check with leaders if temp is below 40°. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Boulevard. Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] and Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942.

November -- Fridays

CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with two climbs to keep us honest. And plan on lunch after the ride at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.

November 3 Saturday

ALL * 38/34/27 * VA * 10:15 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/30%
Charles Cushman Memorial Ride . This is a nice winter training ride, with some good hills, and it is remarkably traffic-free. There is one rest stop. Ride leader will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will basically be "leaderless" groups that will form according to pace and distance. There is usually a post ride lunch bunch. Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious. Barbara Binder [bbinder743ataol.com ] 703/385-9669 or 703/309-3757.

C (F) * 22 * VA * 10 AM * ROO * 40°/35%
Roosevelt Island to Great Falls . Join us for a scenic "C" paced (10-12MPH) ride from Roosevelt Island up to Great Falls Park. After we get out of Georgetown the Fall colors should be splendid for the whole trip up the canal to the GF park. Pack a picnic lunch for our rest stop near the bridges over to the falls overlook. Call leader for additional information. Al Burt 703/521-9629.

C/D * 26 * MD * 10:30 AM * Point of Rocks (POR)
Towpath and Lunch at Harpers Ferry . Park at the picturesque Victorian train station on Rt 28 in the town of Point of Rocks. The bike ride itself is on the towpath to Harpers Ferry and back--an historic stretch where the Potomac cuts through the first line of the Appalachians: Catoctin Ridge and South Mountain. On the way to Harpers Ferry, there are great views of the islands and rapids of the river, as well as the old canal works and the abandoned mill town of Weverton. Hybrid or ATB tires are best, but it can be navigated on a touring bike. Bring a bike lock and money for lunch. Leader is planning to go rain or shine--it can be sunny up the river while it’s raining in Washington. If it’s raining cats and dogs at ride start, we'll explore other options. Mike High 703/597-7912.

CC * 39 * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID) * 70%
Meandering to Marshall . I can promise you one of the best routes I've seen for this mileage - rolling hills, stacked stone fences, beautiful horse farms and white-faced Herefords. If you don't enjoy Zulla Road, it's time to think about listing your bike on Ebay. There are two rest stops with stores and toilet facilities (one's a portable, but come on, this isn't Butterfield and Robinson). Then we finish in one of those full service towns. You know, the kind with good food and cold beer (Salamander Market). Sympathizers of all causes welcome. John Wannen [john@wannen.com] 202/454-6701 or 202/441-5625.

CC * 40 * MD * 10 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Three Covered Bridges . Perfect Fall ride. Join me for one of my favorite rides which promises (and delivers) beautiful scenery and 3 historic bridges to cross. Not much traffic and not many hills. No go if it is raining or threatening to. Possible lunch afterwards at the brewery in Frederick. First time riders feel free to call rider leader with any questions. Susie Etcheverry 202/321-0173.

B (MH) * 40/52 * MD * 10 AM * St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Libertytown
Three Unions and a Windsor. Come out and ride in an area that we do not often see. Beautiful country roads, historic old towns, lovely scenery, generally low traffic. The temperature and the group will determine the ride length. As the park is fielding a huge soccer tournament, we'll accept the generosity of a nearby church for parking, and roll to the park for 0.0 setting & potty use. (Directions [Updated from Pedal Patter]: Libertytown is a little north and east of Frederick, 45 miles from the intersection of I-495 and I-270 – a very easy drive. Take I-270 to US 15 North to a right onto MD 26 towards Walkersville. Follow MD 26 through Libertytown. Turn left at Green Valley Road/Rt. 75. Go one block. Green Valley Road Becomes Church Street. The church address is 9201 A Church Street, Libertytown, MD 21762.) No go in rain. If in doubt about the weather, call the ride leader the morning of the ride. Denise Cohen [bikergal101<>yahoo dot com] 301/233-7535.

B (MH) * 43/56 * VA * 10 AM * Amissville Commuter Lot (AMI) * 40°/35%
Rappahannock's Villes, Mills, & Hills (clockwise) . This route features the scenic wrinkles of Rappahannock county in, we'll hope, full fall livery. The ride(s) were run in the opposite direction in July; this time, we'll go "sunwise", to help keep our forward view aglow. It also puts various routing choices after the rest stop in Sperryville. The 56 mi route all paved, but the shorter route uses a flat, 0.7mi of dirt road (hasn't been a problem). Call if the weather is dubious. Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbm<>verizon.net] 202/543-8005.

BB(MH) * 80 * VA * 9:30 AM * Warren Co. HS, Front Royal (WCH)
Edinburg Gap . Edinburg Gap returns in our customary early November time slot - as I have learned (though others have apparently not) that this ride's exposure makes it an ordeal in the heat but idyllic in the cooler weather. Fast run down the Fort Valley , then over the Edinburg Gap, and then miles and miles of rollers as we head back to Front Royal through Middletown . Joint ride with the "A"s. No go in rain or wet roads. Call the ride leader if weather is questionable. Tracy Hilmer [tracylh417<>verizon.net] 240/274-2016.

A * 66 * MD * 9:30 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV) * 40%
Laytonsville to Salem Bottom . A good ride for late Fall. Plenty of rollers along the way but no major climbs on familiar roads. Ride leader will not show up if there is a better than 40% chance of rain. Hugo Romero [h.romero8@verizon.net] 202/546-0784.

A * 80 * VA * 9:30 AM * Warren Co. HS, Front Royal (WCH)

C (F) * 32 * VA * 10 AM * Margaret M. Pierce ES (MPS) * 70%
Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart'shorse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. E-mail ride leader for the meaning of God or other answers to great riddles.John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C: 202/441-5625.

CC(H) * 35 * VA * 10 AM * LaGrange Winery, Haymarket
Road Ride at LaGrange . Enjoy a ride to Middleburg, and then partake lunch in the setting of what is becoming one of Virginia's premier wineries. Bring food from home or stop en route to pick up winery fare in Middleburg or The Plains (recommend the newly reopened Farm Market in the Plains). Please attend to pre-ride bathroom needs with a stop in Haymarket; there will be no facility at the winery (the winery won't be open at the start time). This is a companion ride to the paved-unpaved Rustic Ride at the La Grange. (Directions: I-66 W past Manassas and Gainesville to Haymarket / Rt 15 exit; L at top of exit ramp; R at second TL onto Rt 55; in one mile, R Antioch Rd; winery in approximately two miles on the left; at the winery, take the driveway that forks to the right and park behind the new building. Alternative: Rt 15 S through Gilbert's Corner / Rt 50 / Rt 15 intersection, R on Waterfall Rd just after TL for Rt 234; L on Antioch Rd in approximately 2 miles; winery on right in about 0.8 mile.) Barbara Binder [bbinder743 at aol.com] 703/385-9669.

CC(H) * 50(ish) * MD * 9:30 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Leaping around Laytonsville . Ride leader has not ridden from Laytonsville all year and is looking forward to re-visiting some well-known roads, that make for good riding territory. We should still have some lovely autumn leaves for scenery. Please call if you have any questions about the weather. Joan Oppel [oppel.js <> verizon.net] C: 703/328-1978.

CC/ATB(H) * 35 * VA * 10 AM * La Grange Winery, Haymarket
Rustic Ride at the La Grange (paved/unpaved) . About 13 miles of this ride is unpaved on quaint narrow back roads. We will start at the newest winery in Northern Virginia, which has become a popular attraction. The winery is also the gateway to some of the best unpaved roads in Fauquier County. After the ride enjoy a lunch with the winery's great wine at their beautiful setting. If you do not bring food from home, there is ample opportunity to pick up good winery fare along the way either in Middleburg or The Plains (recommend the newly reopened Farm Market in the Plains). You will experience Bust Head Road (the more gentle part) and Bull Run Mountain Road on the way to Middleburg. Touring bikes, hybrids, ATB's, and cyclocross bikes all welcome. Minimum tire sizes of 700c/32, 26/1.50, 650b/38 recommended. Several short steep rises on the route qualify this ride for a Hilly rating; you will appreciate your lower gears. Please attend to pre-ride bathroom needs with a stop in Haymarket; there will be no facility at the winery (the winery won't beopen at the start time). B * 45 - 50 * MD * 9:30 AM * Rileys Lock (RIL)
Rileys Lock Meander . Out and about in western Montgomery County. Come on out and join Doreen to get the answer to the burning question… Is it possible for "B" riders, even in November, to actually meander? Will the "BB" police show up to insure that there is no meandering? Will some brave "CC" riders actually ride in the cold, lured out of the warmth of their abodes by the prospect of meandering? No one submits after ride reports anymore so you will just have to come out and see for yourself. Doreen Chaitt [dchaitt@niaid.nih.gov] 301/942-3564.

B (MF) * 32/40+ * DC * 9 AM * Key Park in Georgetown
Sunday Revolution . We'll loop out through Potomac Village on MacArthur. Ride to the start to get 40 miles (if you want to ride down from Kensington call me). Ride leader will be riding Fixed Gear sometimes. You can too. We also have a shorter loop. Coffee at Dean and Deluca's after or refill your bottles at Revolution Cycles. Speedy says he will give discounts to everyone who rides at Revolution Cycles that whole day. No go in rain. (Directions: Key Park is located at the corner of the Key Bridge and M St NW. Parking down on K St.) Gunther Stern [gunther@gmcgt.org] 202/631-2323 Robert "Speedy" Thomas [speedy@revolutioncycles.com] 240/535-9993.

BB/A * 56/65 * MD * 10 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)
Sunday Recovery Ride . These are the standard loops to either Deale or to North Beach depending on how tired we are from yesterday's exertions. Cues have been adjusted for the detour around the Central Ave. bridge closure. Please check the Pedalers Google List server or the PPTC website Ride News forum if weather appears questionable. Al Robertson [al.rob verizon.net] 703/549-6170.

November 7 Wednesday

ALL * 0 * MD * 7 PM * Mamma Lucia's College Park
Midweek Madcap Carbo Loading for the Weekend . Unfortunately less daylight combined with a need to work to fuel our cycling habits are working against us for riding in the evening. However, you can still enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cyclists during dinner on the first Wednesday of every month. Mamma Lucia's is located in College Park at 4734 Cherry Hill Rd. This is just south of the I-495 Beltway off US 1 in the same shopping center as Home Depot. Come join us for good food, good company, and longing for those longer days. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.

CC * 40 * MD * 9:30 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
Dickerson Express . We'll traverse a few rolling hills and the (perhaps) not as bad as it sounds "Mt.Diablo" on the way to a rest stop in Dickerson at the half-way point. One hill on the way back (just after the rest stop) as we breeze back to the start near the C&O canal. No go in rain or wet roads. If you call the day of the ride and there's no answer, I'm on my way and the ride is on. Dale Hunt [dhunt175@yahoo.com] 703/528-3972.

B * 54 * MD * 9 AM * Veirs Mill Park RC (VMP)

B(H) * 58/49 * MD * 10:30 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
MarLu: The Hard Way . Enjoy the views from the top on this scenic and mostly hilly ride around Sugarloaf Mountain. Climbs include the all time favorites MarLu ridge (the hard way), Flint Hill and the hills on Peachtree road. We'll work our way back to Poolesville via Peachtree and Cattail road. Call leader if weather is doubtful. Peter Gruber [pmgruber@comcast.net] 301/581-0999.

B * 66 * VA * 10 AM * Warrenton P&R (WPR)
Warrenburg With a Twist . We'll join our "BB" friends riding to capture cookies in Middleburg. NB: This ride starts along Rt.29 on the edge of Warrenton, not at the in-town lot. Check with leaders if the weather is dubious. Janice Stoodley [Janice.Stoodley<>verizon.net] 703/532-3021.

BB * 66 * VA * 10 AM * Warrenton P&R (WPR)
Warrenburg With a Twist . Rolling ride through Marshall and Middleburg (it's Saturday, so the cookie shop should be open). This is basically Wayne's Warrenburg Ride with a few extra hills added in. Note: Ride start is the Park & Ride prior to entering Warrenton, not the downtown lot. Melinda Simons [melindasimons <> yahoo.com] 703/892-4928.

BB(MH) * 68 * MD * 9 AM * Urbana P&R (URB)
How Hilly is My Valley . Who knew there were so many hills in the valley? We never get that far above sea level, but we sure will rack up some elevation gain as we wind our way to Libertytown and points north, drop through Unionville on our way to Mt. Airy and finally chug back to Urbana. Some details are up in the air as of press time, but we'll have two rest stops. No go in rain. Eric Pilsk [epilsk@gmail.com] 240/893-3499.

November 11 Sunday

C * 25ish * VA * 11 AM * Old Dominion Brewpub * 45°
Old Dominion Brewpub Ride . A fun ride on the W O & D Trail (beginning from Brewpub parking lot at 25.5 mile marker). All levels are encouraged to join us and ride at your own pace. The ride leader will do a "C" pace. One hour out and one hour back to parking lot. Those who like can meet at the Brewpub at 1 PM for burgers and brew...they have the greatest root beer. (Directions from the Capital beltway: Take the Dulles Toll Road (VA-267 West) to exit 9-B / Rt 28 North. After the second traffic light, exit to the left at Waxpool Rd / Rt 625 west toward Ashburn. Take a right at the 3rd traffic light onto Loudoun County Pkwy. Merge to the left and take your 1st left at Beaumeade Circle. Take the 2nd left at Guilford Dr. Old Dominion is the 2nd entrance on your left, #44633 Guilford Dr.) If weather looks doubtful, call. Teri Larriva 703/644-0884 or C: 703/629-8847.

CC(H) * 35/45 * MD * TBA * Glenwood MS (GLW)
Glenwood Gambol . A fine, scenic, Howard County jaunt that won't be too hilly but, after all, it is Howard county. This is a delightful ride if your seatpost bolt does not shear off. Note that the ride start time is TBA .... Since I don't know if the temperature is going to be 80° or 65° I don't know the best time to start this ride. So as an experiment I am going to have it assigned 3 days before the ride. I will post the time on the RIDE forum, send it to the google group and email it to anyone who asks. If you are not online just call me. I did this last summer and it was WILDLY successful. Note all the copycats. Janet Young and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.

CC(MH) * 47 * VA * 9:30 AM * Clarke County HS, Berryville (CCH)
Shenandoah River Rustic (paved/unpaved) . A ride that explores both banks of the Shenandoah River between Rt 7 and Rt 50, including many of the roads you passed by on the PPTC Century. Half this ride is nearly flat, the other half very hilly (2900' of climbing total), hence the MH designation. If you enjoy scenic dirt road riding, you will love this ride. Lunch at the deli in Millwood at mile 30. You can find the route at http://www.routeslip.com/routes/23935. Steve Palincsar [palincss@his.com] C: 703/548-1585.

B * 38/48 * VA * 9 AM * Vienna Community Center (VCC) * 35°
Great Falls/River Bend Variation . All classes welcome. Since you may driven far yesterday or plan to drive out to SkyMass tomorrow, here's a close in ride for the day in-between. Have the afternoon at home! The Great Falls portion has sufficiently challenging hills. I hope to have a 10 mile add-on to the basic 38 if the weather warrants. Wet roads on these hills will definitely mean CANCEL. Patrick Dominick [pld1 AT cox.net] 703/927-5986.

B (H) * 58 or Less * MD * 9:30 AM * Bollman Bridge ES (BOL)
The Hills of Ellicott City . Just because it is a bit nippy out doesn't mean we have to give up training for the mountain stages of the Giro, Tour and Vuelta! These hills run the gamut from short and steep to long and not quite as steep. A fairly easy ride from Savage to Ellicott City and then we will do the loops including the seven hills of Ellicott City. As a bonus, the longer ride goes from the foot of Illchester Rd on the Grist Mill Trail to Gun Rd. We will stay in Howard County and if it is too cold, we will forgo a few of the hills to make the ride shorter. However, fear not. Illchester Rd and College Rd are early in the ride. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.

BB/A * 55-60ish * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID) * 35°
Something In The Middle . A route I did the first time I ever attended a PPTC ride, and haven't really revisited since (amnesia, anyone?). Bear and Bull . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a new and sometimes challenging ride out of Tyler ES to points north, thereby avoiding the long hill into The Plains. The ride includes country roads along woods and pleasant pastures. When Ed Kerr and I pre-rode the route on May 4, a bear was spotted at mile 13. Later, Ed had a stare-down with a bull calf that had escaped from the pasture. BOTH TRUE! Me, I did not try to out-distance either the bear or the bull, but I made a point of keeping Ed between me and the critters. (I didn't have to outrun the bear, only to ride faster than Ed.) The ride has many moderate hills but is also refreshingly flat in many places. One rest stop at 16 miles. Total ascent is about 1,900 over 34 miles or 55 per mile. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader before 8:30 the morning of the ride. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/585-1238.

The Hibbs Bridge Returns Ride . Come out and enjoy a moderately hilly and scenic horse country ride that will include going over Hibbs Bridge on Snickersville Turnpike! The ribbon cutting ceremony to reopen the bridge is set for Friday, November 16 at 3 PM according to Henry Plaster of the Snickersville Turnpike Association, who invites everyone to attend. For those new to the club, this little stretch of the Turnpike is a key segment for many rides, as well as the base of either a big climb or a big descent depending on which way you are headed. The bridge has been repaired to remain an historic bridge versus a modern bridge and it is well worth the dismount to see the masonry work in the bridge's arches. After the ride, we'll head over to Market Salamander for a late lunch (which, btw, has fabulous turkey gravy for sale for those of us not planning to make it on Thanksgiving). No go in steady rain. Contact ride leader the morning of the ride if weather is iffy and earlier in the week if general questions. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THESCHOOL PARKING LOT. You can park on the Middleburg streets near the school (especially on North Madison St) and cycle/walk over to the school, where the ride will begin from.
