Weekday Rides

October -- Mondays

BB * 30ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet roads. Check with leaders if the weather is questionable. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Boulevard. Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942.

October -- Tuesdays

B * 15 * MD * 5:15 PM * Colonnades at Kentlands
Kentlands Kaper . An early ride start and a short route so we can be back before dark. Riders can use the bathroom of Gaithersburg Dental Care to change. (Directions: From I-270 take I-370 / Sam Eig Hwy west to a right turn (north) onto Great Seneca Hwy and proceed 2-3 miles. Turn left at Quince Orchard Rd. Make the first left (at Exxon station) which is Booth St. Another quick left at Arch Pl. and proceed 2 blocks to the parking lot. October -- Fridays

CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with two climbs to keep us honest. And plan on lunch after the ride at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or C: 202/997-2376.

October 3 Wednesday

ALL * 0 * MD * 7 PM * Mamma Lucia's College Park
Midweek Madcap Carbo Loading for the Weekend . Unfortunately less daylight combined with a need to work to fuel our cycling habits are working against us for riding in the evening. However, you can still enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cyclists during dinner on the first Wednesday of every month. Mamma Lucia's is located in College Park at 4734 Cherry Hill Rd. This is just south of the I-495 Beltway off US 1 in the same shopping center as Home Depot. Come join us for good food, good company, and longing for those longer days. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders*yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.

October 6 Saturday

D * 25 * MD * 11 AM * Frostburg Depot
Allegheny Highlands Trail . This is a relatively flat ride through mountain scenery on a rail trail that opened last December in western Maryland. Refer to http://www.ahtmtrail.org/content/view/2/35/ for information about the trail and directions. There are various options as to distance (one can go as far as one desires). There is no car traffic. The fall foliage should be at peak. It's worth the trip from the Washington area, and there are attractive overnight accommodations for those that might want to stay and ride again on Sunday. Call leader for full information. Willis Van Devanter 301/972-7298.

D/C * 0-25 * DC * 10:45 AM * 37th St NW @ Tilden St NW
Bike Tour of Solar Homes, Day 1 . Urban ride, mostly on low-traffic streets, to inspect up to seven solar homes and buildings within DC. Our group may spend 20 minutes or more at each home, so the full tour may end as late as 5:30 PM. You can readily shorten your tour by visiting fewer homes (most are clustered near the ride start) and either cycling or taking Metrorail back to the start (or your home). The ride start, at the Sidwell Friends Middle School back entrance, has plenty of free on-street parking. A free tour booklet that describes each home on the tour and is needed to enter the homes can be downloaded at [http://solartour.org]. Allen Muchnick [muchnick@capaccess.org] 703/271-0895 and Timothy Bouquet 202/387-8731.

D/C (MF) * 16/25 * VA * 10:30 AM * GMU University Mall, Fairfax
Around the City of Fairfax . Meet in front of McDonald at the intersection of the Braddock Rd and Ox Rd / Rt 123. Relaxing ride around and thru the City of Fairfax on streets, trails, sidewalks (when switching neighborhood) and thru parks. All type of bikes and experienced bikers welcome because you can ride with speed that is comfortable for you. Parking at the University Mall because after the ride we will have a lunch together at the Tong Thai restaurant. If heavy rain, biking would be canceled. Woody Lipinski [woodylipinski@cox.net ] 703/764-2702.

CC * 50 * MD * 10 AM * Thurmont Community Park (TCP)
North of Thurmont . We will head north to Emmitsburg and Fairfield on scenic rolling back roads in a rural setting. We will explore the northern Frederick valley with uninterrupted views of the Catoctin Mountains, perhaps with fall foliage. A rest stop is planned at mile 21. A second rest stop is planned (with no food or services) at mile 36. Bring an extra water bottle and a energy snack for the second stop. Ride will be swept. No go on wet roads. Route excerpted from the Civil War Metric Century. Linda and Lanny Evans 301/590-0088.

CC * 79 * VA * 9 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot-A (WAR)
Warrenton Wonderlust (Before the Waterford Fair Ride) . Come out and do this challenging ride (real hills throughout) with five good rest stops for taking breathers. Ride leader plans to ride hard on Saturday and enjoy the Waterford Fair on Sunday versus thinking about the ride's hills were leader to go to the Fair on Saturday ( i.e. this is a ride to do versus thinking about too much). No go in steady rain. Call ride leader morning of the ride if weather is questionable (or if any other questions) and CHECK the PPTC website forum as leader will post a cancellation or a delayed start time there. Brin Luther [brinluther at comcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.

B * 46-55 * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
Not the Seagull Century . This may be the day of the Seagull Century, but I will be leading a ride from a close-in location. Thanks to Barbara Scott for designing the ride. We'll be leave from the parking lot and head out to Poolesville.....the shortest route is 46, but you can do 55 miles. I'll be riding at a slow "B" pace...all are welcome. Helmets please. Park in the far corner of the lot. Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] 301/367-2430.

B/BB(H) * 75 * MD * 9 AM * Point of Rocks (POR)
Shadow of the Catoctins . When we tried this in August the heat took some of the fun out of the ride, so we'll try in again in the hopes of comfortable Fall temperatures. For those of you who missed it, the ride has plenty of flat to rolling miles, plenty of steeper rollers, plenty of plain old climbing and plenty of bombable descents. With so much plenty to choose from, you are sure to enjoy the ride. Two scheduled rest stops, with some optional pit stops along the way. No go in rain. Please allow extra time to get to the ride start as there is a detour on Rt 28 in Tuscarora (between Dickerson and POR) due to bridge reconstruction. B: Doreen Dotzler [Dotzler@mail.house.gov] 301/325-6325; BB: Eric Pilsk [epilsk@gmail.com] 240/893-3499, and Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.

BB (MH) * 69 * VA * 9:30 AM * Amissville Commuter Lot (ACL)
Old Rag Views . This ride was well attended in July and I heard suggestions to run it again in the Fall. The ride seemed a bit hillier than a moderately hilly (MH) designation with ~4500' of elevation gain. Beware that pretty much the whole ride is up or down, no flat. I recently updated this cue on the PPTC web site. Wet conditions at the onset will likely be cause for cancellation of this ride, call if doubtful. Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727-0321.

October 7 Sunday

TANDEM * 8-45 * MD * 10 AM * My Airy Bicycles
TANDEMO/BentEvent . Rides from the popular 8-mile 'New to Tandems' intro to 38-mile and other distances by WABITS and CRABS. Expo/Demos 11 AM to 3 PM. After the ride enjoy a bicycle show of tandems, recumbents and singles, plus other interesting 2-wheeled modes of transportation. Bike Tour of Solar Homes, Day 2 . Suburban ride to inspect up to four solar homes in Greenbelt, with the option to then visit two more homes in Takoma Park. The route uses only low-traffic streets in Greenbelt, but a few moderate-traffic streets are used to reach Takoma Park. The ride leaders may not return to the ride start from Takoma Park at the end of the ride, but those who park at the ride start and bike to Takoma Park can either backtrack 10 miles by bike or take Metrorail for the return leg. Our group may spend 20 minutes or more at each home, so the full ride may end as late as 5 PM. A free tour booklet that describes each home on the tour and is needed to enter the homes can be downloaded at [http://solartour.org]. Allen Muchnick [muchnick@capaccess.org] 703/271-0895 and Timothy Bouquet 202/387-8731.

C * 34/48 * VA * 10 AM * Markham, Stribling Orchard
Apple Pickers' Delight . This is the popular peach pickers' delight, but during apple season. Ride leader will bring cue sheets for an optional 48 mile ride (if the group prefers a longer ride and weather is picture perfect). Either ride is somewhat hilly but wonderfully scenic. The ride originates from Stribling orchard in Markham, Virginia. Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills, the orchard has rest rooms, water, soft drinks, and homemade pies. You can pick or simply purchase delicious tree-ripened apples. Bring a few dollars for apples. Bags are provided. On the 34 mile ride, there is a rest stop a Orlean Market. C/CC * 45 or less * MD * 10:30 AM * Western MD Rail Trail - Big Pool
Western Maryland Rail Trail . Enjoy a FLAT ride through beautiful Western Maryland countryside. This is a paved trail that is 23 miles long and runs parallel to the C&O canal. There are plenty of rest stops in Hancock, MD which is ten miles in to the trail. The trail had plenty of shade and clean porta potties at the parking area in Big Pool. Turn east, past a convenience store (with food and bathrooms) to the parking lot on the left. The start point is approximately 1/2 hour past Hagerstown, MD so plan on a 1-1/2 to 2 hr trip from the Washington DC metro area.) I will not ride in the rain. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515.

CC(MH) * 36/46 * MD * 9 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)

B * 57-65 * MD * 9 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
MarLu…or Not . This ride will bring back fond memories of rides along time-honored roads past Riley's Lock. For the adventurous, Marlu will be there for the taking. For those looking to omit this thrill, there is a detour to miss it. Either way, there are two rest stops along the route. People who go on this ride are encouraged to ride hard. They also should not be ashamed to socialize and be merry. All are encouraged to stay for an old-fashioned tailgate at ride's end, featuring beer and authentic Wisconsin brats (with, of course, veggie options). Please bring a dish/ refreshment to share. BB (MF) * 67 * VA * 9:30 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot-A (WAR)
Kellys Ford - Long . A recovery ride from the hard rides on the weekend. I always really enjoy the beautiful riding away down in Rappahannock River country. The stop in Remington for some reason always reminds me that Virginia is part of the South, even if it doesn't feel like it until you get that far down State. I recently updated this cue on the PPTC web site. Wet conditions at the onset will likely be cause for cancellation of this ride; call if doubtful. Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727-0321.

Around Sugarloaf . Take a nice, scenic autumn trip through Montgomery and Frederick counties. Rediscover your big chain ring as you ride on the long and relatively flat roads between Sugarloaf and MarLu Ridge (neither of which you'll be asked to climb.) Avoid the attempts made by local government to destroy the roads of western Montgomery County by dumping gravel on them. We'll ride free and enjoy ourselves! We'll enjoy the cool weather, but we won't ride in rain. Tom Humphrey [kitefencer@comcast.net] 301/602-0434.

CC(MH) * 50 * VA * 9:30 AM * Loudoun County HS, Leesburg (LOU) * 30%
Loudoun Valley Variation . This is a lovely ride that goes through Purcellville & Hillsboro with the first Rest Stop at mile 23 in Round Hill. We come back through Purcellville at mile 40 and will stop at Mario's Pizza for lunch. Going back, it's an easy 7 miles on the trail, and then the last 3.5 miles downhill on Dry Mill. HELMETS PLEASE. B/BB * 50 * VA * 9:30/9:45 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot-A (WAR)
BBirthday Ride. (Ride modified from PP printing)
It's Melinda's birthday, so come out and celebrate. (Can someone bring a cake or two?) Bill will lead out the Bs at 9:30; Melinda and the BBs will give chase at 9:45. This is a nice old Fauquier County ride by Wayne Consolla that apparently hasn’t been led for a while. The demise of the Casanova store means the rest stop isn’t until mile 30 in Bristerburg, so be prepared. We'll bring a 62-mile variation in case any A riders show up (but you'd better start early and ride fast to get back before the cake is gone). No go in serious rain. Bill Strong [williamstrong@earthlink.net] c: 202/277-1723 & Melinda Simons [melindasimons@yahoo.com] c: 703/892-4928.

B(H) * 58/49 * MD * 10 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
MarLu: The Easy Way . A scenic ride on the rolling hills around Sugarloaf Mountain and across MarLu ridge (long route only). This time we will take the easy way. No go in rain and/or on wet roads. Call leader if weather is doubtful. Peter Gruber [pmgruber@comcast.net] 301/581-0999.

BB/A(H) * 55 * MD * 9:30 AM * Damascus HS (DAM)
All Roads to Damascus Run Uphill . Here's a cue sheet that's been around for 20 years, and it's still a keeper. It's relatively short (only 55 mi), but what it lacks in distance, it makes up in hills. We head up to Union Bridge, then into Mt Airy and back to Damascus from there. Don't let the hills deter you, it's a great ride! Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.

D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11:00 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington, VA (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington. See October 7 ride description for details. Ron Trueworthy [Ron_Trueworthy@Yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL

C/CC * 31 (MF)* VA * 10:15 AM * Brentsville Park, Bristow/Brentsville, VA * 50%
Unpainted Country Lanes. A repeat by popular demand - THE BEST RIDE IMAGINABLE for "C" riders who hate hills and for "CC" riders who love a paceline. The intention is to avoid roads with paint on them, and the design does an excellent job of it. To accomplish this, the route twists around country lanes like a calender full of over-cooked spaghetti. And yet, there are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches. Traffic is minimal and the route hardly has hills, but there are one or two rises here and there. The ride starts at Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park, which is worth a trip and a tour in its own right. It features six notable buildings. The one-room schoolhouse - built around 1928 - is one of the few if not the only remaining one-room schoolhouses in Prince William County. Total ascent is only 750 over 31 miles or a very reasonable 25 per mile. Restroom facilities at ride start after 10:00 a.m. One official rest stop at mile 14.5 in Nokesville Park - no snacks; some water. Porta-john at Aden Grocery Store at miles 10 and 21. Road Rally to the "Hunt Country British Auto Show ." For all the British auto enthusiasts out there, here is your chance to cycle to the premier British auto show in this region. The show is an annual event at the Willoughby Farm on Frogtown Road. If you are not a car enthusiast you can still be astounded by the automobiles represented. Last year's best in show was a lowly, but immaculately restored 1935 Morris Tourer. But my favorites are the not so perfect cars that are driven to the show, such as the early 1950s Riley Saloon sedan we encountered on our route last year, stalled, broken down and being assisted by the riders in another Riley sedan. The cars later passed us motoring on to the show. At the show I met the individuals and learned they had driven from Delaware to show their cars. ("The interstate speed was just a bit much for the magneto, I finally had to use the hand crank from the tool kit to start it," remarked the owner of the troubled Riley.) With luck we will see some of these cars on our route, because on the way to the show they tourthe same back roads we cycle. Bring lunch or buy food at the site. You can check out the event at www.mgcarclubdc.com. No go in the rain: check Marshall at www.weather.com. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062.

The Old Rag Hollows/Foliage Tour . This ride is designed to get you between the toes of the Blue Ridge's Old Rag Mountain (S, E, and N sides) at the prime-time (hopefully) of the fall foliage season. The ride is a variant of "Old Rag Views" from the cue sheet library, but it starts closer to Old Rag, and lets you spend just as much time (or more) in the lovely area around Syria (VA) with significantly less mileage to get there. When I tested the route last year, the hollows were the most beautiful ride segments I had ridden in VA with bubbling streams, beautiful ferns (in woods), open meadows, and interesting farms/buildings. In any case, this ride makes a substantial change from the typical rides on the I-66/I-267 corridor (or even Warrenton and Remington). Three extensions can be added/removed to adjust the ride if you want more/less time in the hollows. They are well worth that little extra effort. (About 75 ft/mi of climb.) Required: helmets and at least two water bottles. No go in rain. Blue Ridger Backwards . I'm now in the camp that believes the reverse is the better way to go. A nice easy warm-up before the tough Naked Mtn climb. Then, after the long climb to the high point of Mt Weather, there's a long stair-step descent to Rte 7 instead of the long stair-step ascent with all its demoralizing false tops. The rest stop is at the end of the descent at the Bluemont store. The return to Marshall remains a fast and furious section. No go in rain or on really wet roads, call if in doubt. Rustic Excursion to Chrysalis (paved/unpaved) . Join ride leader as he makes his monthly journey to pick up his two bottles of subscription wines at Chrysalis Winery. About 8 miles of this route are unpaved as we ride Bull Run Mountain Rd to the Winery. Here is the plan: ride to The Plains, stop at "The Farm Market" (which will have reopened by this time), pick up victuals to go with the wine at Chrysalis, proceed to the Winery for a nice lunch in the nicest season of the year at one of the nicest wine venues in Virginia. Touring bikes, hybrids, cyclcross recommended. Mountain, ATB bikes also O.K., but since most of the route is paved, aggressively treaded mountain bike tires aren't needed. Hill and Dale - Airlie or Blackwell. MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This route s rises are varied and interesting, the rural ridges scenic, and the serene stream valley vivid in spring greens or autumn hues. It contains two options with the split at 11 miles. (Each fork is fantastic, but I couldn't figure out how to include both on the same route.) One option takes you onto Airlie Road, which goes along a perfectly manicured and flat lane adjacent to the beautiful conference center. The other option is on Blackwell Road, which spreads out before you into an exciting, curving downhill ribbon. Of the two, Blackwell is one mile shorter but one uphill longer. Fauquier Rustic #11 . The Great Cobbler Mountains Roundabout (paved/unpaved). About ten miles of this route is unpaved on picturesque bucolic roads that are typical to Fauquier County, which roads the county is fierce on preserving. No long hills, but unrelenting short rises qualify the hilly rating. The destination of the ride is lunch in Orlean but there will be great views of the two Cobbler mountains. The route is influenced by the topography of the mountains, beginning on Carrington Road with a short hidden valley hugging the ridge that is part of Little Cobbler Mountain, and then Moreland Road that skirts between the two mountains with the first views of Big Cobbler. You then continue around Big Cobbler on Ramey Rd and Hume Rd followed by an easy ride from the foot of the beg mountain on Dixon Mill Road on the way to Orlean. After Orlean, the route then pivots around Big Cobbler on the way back to Marshall. I recommend touring bikes, cyclocross, and hybrid bikes. Mountain bikes are also appropriate, but since most ofthe ride is paved I recommend not using the typical heavy treaded mountain bike tires. I do recommend 700c x 28 - 32; 26 x 1.50, and 650b. No go in rain. Check Marshall and Orlean on www.weather.com. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062.

Local Yokels Revised . We still visit Great Falls and McLean, but due to the relocation of one of the co-leaders we are now starting and ending in Vienna -- no, not Austria. This ride no longer goes through Arlington. Hey, there are just as many local yokels in Vienna as there are in Arlington to look at, maybe more. We still stop at the Sweet Stuff Pastry Shop and we have found a new place to have an after-ride treat, it just will not be Mom's Place. Skyline Views w/longer option . That's right -- a relaxed start time for a favorite of ours so that your Saturday night is still alright. Rolling hills that have a way of accumulating by the end of the ride to offer an opportunity for a nice work out. If its a clear day, the scenery about this time of the year can be stunning. "BB"s have an additional, 13-mile "Hollow-2-Hollow" option to further indulge in autumn splendor. This triangular loop from (Little) Washington ascends to the side of the Blue Ridge through Gid Brown Hollow (which contains two half-mile unpaved sections -- mostly dirt & some light gravel), then sweeps back down to Washington along with the Rush River. It's well worth the extra effort, esp. in autumn. And we'll try for a bit of remembrance of our old FFFF (Frederick Fall-Foliage Frolic) with a Tailgate afterwards. (We might have a grill, and there's a friendly IGA a short walk away.) Check with leaders if the weather is dubious. Clara Martinez C: 703/801-4171 or Keith Blinn C: 703/201-3003.

Skyline Views & Hollow-2-Hollow . We join others from the club with a ride through the foothills of the Blue Ridge, with one beautiful approach up to its flank. If the weather is nice and the legs willing, there are some longer options on the return to the 66mi route. With the gathering of several ride classes today, there should be some bit of post-ride potlucking, maybe more. Also, please try to park efficiently to help fit more into MAR.
