A nice in-town ride with an emphasis on natural scenery. We'll ride up Beach Drive, through nice neighborhoods with some long hills, and down Sligo Creek Parkway. This ride invites ALL pace levels and naturally splits into smaller groups. The ride leader's pace is "CC"; a cadre of regulars know the route and will help those who are faster or slower. There will be no sweep. We'll swing by CAN around 10 AM to pick up anyone starting from there and regroup when we stop at the Takoma Park Co-Op. Ride to the ride start to save the planet and get in a few extra miles. Susie Etcheverry 202/321-0173.

D * 17 * VA * 10:30 AM * Great Marsh Trail Parking Lot
Mason Neck Picnic Ride. Join us for a relaxing social ride along a mix of lightly-traveled roads and paved bike trails on a scenic peninsula near Occoquan. We will ride through Mason Neck State Park, the adjacent National Wildlife Preserve, Gunston Hall historic plantation, and some lovely neighborhoods facing the Potomac River. This is a flat ride (only one short hill) with lots of shade and natural beauty the whole way. At the end, we will celebrate with a BYO picnic accompanied by free cold drinks. The ride loops around the start area, so you are never more than a few miles from your car. Toilet facilities are available. Nobody will be left behind. Call ride leader that morning if weather looks doubtful. (Directions: Take I-95 South to Lorton Exit / Rt 163 to Rt 1 South. Turn left on Gunston Rd and go approximately six miles to the ride start at the Great Marsh Trail parking lot on the right.) Jake Chesson [jake3315@yahoo.com] C: 703/798-8435.

CC * 42/58 * VA * 9:30 AM * Boyce ES (BES)
Boyce and Berryville. Back by acclaim is my ever-popular, oh-so-scenic, and exquisitely gentle Boyce-Berryville ride. On Labor Day I had a record turnout on this ride and, as I promised some of you, I'm leading it again. It won't be hot and the trees will surely be changing, so this could be very fine. The ride is over a very fast course (riders tend to average 2 mph higher than normal), traffic is light, and there are no significant climbs of any kind until the last 5 miles of the 42-mile route. You all know the drill: on truly rural roads, we loop from Boyce northward into West Virginia, returning via Berryville on paths known to one and all as part of the Club Century. We have a rest stop at the 9-mile mark (with facilities) and another at 30 miles. The decision point for the longer route occurs near the end of the 42 mile route, so folks have time and distance to decide on the ultimate length of their ride. Afterwards, I may opt to head over the Hunter's Head Tavern in Upperville, which is on the way back, for brews and lunch. NO GO IN RAIN. (Directions: from the Beltway / I-495, West on I-66 about 40 miles to exit North at "U.S. Rt. 17/Delaplane" (after Marshall), go to the T at Rt 50, West / left on Rt 50 for 9 miles to first TL (Sheetz, potties), right on Rt 340 for a few miles into Boyce, turn L at the blinking light onto Rt 723, and then in 0.2 mi turn L into the school parking lot.) Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] 571/332-2571.

B * 35-45 * VA * 9 AM * Vienna Community Center (VCC)
Great Falls and River Bend. Come on out for some suburban and rural remnant roads, with a few hills. Details will be posted on the PPTC Forum. Liam Healy [biker@healy.washington.dc.us] 202/547-7565.

B(H) * 55ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Laytons Village SC (LAV)
Surprise Loop. I, Bob B., am not sure exactly where Rich will be taking us as he did not give me a description but it will have some hills, not be hot, and will be a beautiful ride. No go in pouring rain. Rich Kodl [richkodl@yahoo.com] 301/869-2218.

BB/A * 57 * VA * 9:30 AM * The Plains (PLA)
Circumnavigating Warrenton. Last running of the year for one of my favorite rides. This is a pretty fast ride: after a short warm-up into Marshall, the speed gets turned up on the Carter's Run Rd rollers followed by flats in the middle and climbing at the end. One rest stop at the Opal Sheetz. No go in rain or on really wet roads, call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] or C: 571/232-0164.

October 10 Friday

CC * 35 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
No Foolin', Another Way To Orlean. This is a slightly hilly ride including Piney Mountain Road to Orlean for a snack and bathroom stop at mile 18. No go in rain or wet roads. Roger Cubbage [jwcubbage@juno.com] C: 703/447-7169.

CC * 43 * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
Horse Hills. Come out to the Virginia countryside in early fall to ride the classic Horse Hills Route. It's a hilly ride, but not killer hilly (though if you don't like hills, you won't like this ride). We will head over to Market Salamander for lunch after the ride. Please contact ride leader well before the ride with any questions and look to the PPTC website the day of the ride if the weather is iffy. Leader will post there no later than 8 AM if the ride is cancelled for any reason. Brin Luther [BrinlutherATcomcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.

CC/C * 45 or less * MD * 10:30 AM * Western MD Rail Trail - Big Pool
Western Maryland Rail Trail. Enjoy a FLAT ride through beautiful Western Maryland countryside. This is a paved trail that is 23 miles long and runs parallel to the C&O canal. There are plenty of rest stops in Hancock, MD which is ten miles in to the trail. The trail had plenty of shade and clean porta potties at the parking area in Big Pool. No cue sheet is necessary as this ride is flat and straight. (Directions to the trail head: take exit 12, Rt 56, from I-70. Turn east, past a convenience store (with food and bathrooms) to the parking lot on the left. The start point is approximately 1/2 hour past Hagerstown, MD so plan on a 1-1/2 to 2 hr trip from the Washington DC metro area.) I will not ride in the rain. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515 or day of ride C: 301/828-5257.

B * 55 * MD * 9 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)

Nancy Kotarski [nancykotarski@comcast.net] cell 703/774-2168.

BB/A(H) * 280 * VA * 6:15 AM * Chantilly HS (CHA)
Blue Ridge Byways Carpool Collection Point. (Mileage is estimated full commute to the ride start.) Here is a local starting point to share commute costs out to the remote ride start west of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Ride leader will organize a carpool caravan (I can carry one rider or contribute for gas). Plan on dinner, probably in Harrisonburg, on the way home. Please contact to let me know you're coming. I'll will be monitoring my cell phone. For ride details, see below. Kelly Smith [bike_kelly<>yahoo.com] 703/568-0424.

BB/A(H) * 75/99 * WV * 9 AM * Brandywine Rec Area
Blue Ridge Byways. This is a beautiful route pioneered by Rick Bidstrup and Al Robertson, and traverses some of the most scenic terrain in the Eastern US. We climb 5 of the 9 mountains found on the more difficult Mountain Mama challenge century, but in the opposite direction, with a ride start closer to DC. Although we do plenty of climbing (over 6500'), the first mountain is not until mile 25, giving a nice warm up. Between the climbs we meander through the Blue Grass Valley, with its hint of Switzerland. The full ride is 99 miles, but there is a 75-mile option as well, which eliminates two of the climbs. If we get lucky we'll hit the height of the Fall colors. Ride leader will organize a carpool caravan from Chantilly HS at 6:15 am (see above). Please contact to let me know you're coming. I'll will be monitoring my cell phone. Plan on dinner, probably in Harrisonburg, on the way home. (Directions: Take I-66 West to Rt 81 South. At exit 247-B / Harrisonburg take Rt 33 West, and continue approximately 30 miles, crossing over the first big climb (Shenandoah Mtn). The Brandywine rec area is on the left right at the bottom of the descent. (If you see the small town of Brandywine, or "Fat Boys Pork Palace", you've gone too far!))Kelly Smith [bike_kelly<>yahoo.com] 703/568-0424.

BB/A(MH) * 57/63 * MD * 9:15 AM * Point of Rocks (POR)
Ghosts of Antietam Prelude. This ride reaches NW to the battlefield at Sharpsburg, and takes in many seldom-visited roads & small towns en route. We'll use a milder crossing of South Mtn., up Arnoldstown Rd. The routes diverge on their return, with the 57 going back over S. Mtn on Townsend Rd, while the metric route rolls along shaded Elk Ridge then into the sun at Garretts Mill on the opposite hillside, to return through Brunswick. Both routes offer a chance of a second stop, if desired (the shorter passes the Jefferson Pastry Shop). If weather is dubious, check the PPTC Forum or listserve, or contact the ride leader. Mark Hemhauser [mbhhbmverizon.net] C: 202/543-8005 or 202/834-9309.

The terrain is mainly rolling with a few notable hills. As with our rides, Jay will be riding at a faster pace with Jeanette averaging an honest "B" pace. One rest stop. B/A (MH) * 50-62 * VA * 9 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Horsefeathers!. That was the intended route, but that's what was uttered upon learning late that the route's targeted store in Philomont opens at noon on Sundays. So, at press time it's back to the drawing board. The route on the day might be chosen then based on the situation--whether a nice recovery ride is wanted, or something more vigorous, if Saturday's riding was weathered out. In the face of dubious weather, check with the leaders. Janice Stoodley [Janice.Stoodley<>verizon.net] 703/532-3021 and Claude Cavender [CCavender<>cox.net] before 10 PM 703/255-7096.

October 13 Monday

C/CC * 35 (MH) * VA * 10 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL) * 45°/50%
Hill and Dale - Airlie or Blackwell. MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This route's rises are varied and interesting, the rural ridges scenic, and the serene stream valley vivid in spring greens or autumn hues. This ride consists of two options with the split at 11 miles. (Each fork is fantastic, but I couldn't figure out how to include both on the same route.) One option takes you onto Airlie Road, which goes along a perfectly manicured and flat lane adjacent to the beautiful conference center. The other option is on Blackwell Road, which spreads out before you into an exciting, curving downhill ribbon. Of the two, Blackwell is one mile shorter but one uphill longer. Total ascent is 2,400 feet over 35 miles or about 65 per mile. No restroom facilities at TYL. Questions? Call ride leader at home 2 hours before ride start or on cell phone. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/350-9209.

CC(HH) * 40 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
No Foolin', Yet ANOTHER Way To Orlean. No, the "HH" designation is not a misprint, so don't say I didn't warn you! This is a ride Emil Regelman created and led a few years back, and is long overdue for a repeat. Enjoy great scenery and relax with a tasty treat on the back patio of the famous Orlean Market. Jim Houghton [houghtonjf@hotmail.com] 703/266-2209.

NCR Trail Picnic Ride. Come join us for a relaxing social ride under a beautiful canopy of trees on the North Central Railroad Trail just north of Baltimore. The NCR Trail is a lightly-used pastoral gem that runs almost flat along a small winding river through Gunpowder Falls State Park and then continues all the way to York, PA. It has a wide, smooth, packed-stone surface suitable for all riders and most bikes. The ride starts at the Paper Mill Rd. parking area on the NCR trail and proceeds 11 miles to the "New Wishing Well" inhabited by leprechauns warning "Violators will be Toad." On the way back, we will stop for a picnic break at Monkton where sandwiches and drinks are available if you need them. There are full toilets at Monkton and portable facilities along the trail every few miles. This is an up and back ride at an easy pace, so nobody will be left behind. Between The Rivers. The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and one Captain Custer. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. "Now, of my three score years, my friend, twenty will not come again, And take from 50 springs a score, It only leaves me 50 more." (paraphrased)John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C 202/374-1523.

Apples and Wine: Fall Farm Tour of Montgomery County.RESCHEDULED FROM SEPT 28. Have you ever wondered why D.C. has some of the best cycling in the region right on its doorstep? Cyclists are blessed with a 93,000-acre Agricultural Reserve just 30 minutes north and west of the city. The Ag Reserve, Maryland 's rural treasure, is home to hundreds of farms, orchards, galleries and a vineyard. Please join us on one of three scenic routes on lightly traveled roads around the Ag Reserve. Featured stops will be Kingsbury Orchard and Homestead Farm (both family-owned and generations old), and Sugarloaf Mountain Winery. If you're tempted to buy apples at the end of the ride, the last stop, Kingsbury's Orchard, is only four miles from the High School. Note: The 70-mile route includes a 3-mile stretch of hard-packed gravel at the base of Sugarloaf similar to what you encounter at the extended portion of the Capitol Crescent Trail. Don't let that dissuade you. It's pretty smooth and one of the most beautiful sections of the ride. ALSO NOTE: THE 28-MILE ROUTE WILL LEAVE FROM POOLESVILLE GOLF COURSE (rather than Poolesville High School) AS SCHEDULED. SEE JOE GOLLA'S "C" RIDE ENTRY ABOVE. Questions? Please contact Denise Cohen at bikergal101yahoo.com, or 301-233-7535 on the morning of the ride.

Not So Civil Century. Hanna and volunteering to lead the Kent Island Social ride the scheduled day after the Civil War Century conspired to cause me to miss this ride. I understand that there is a killer hill that has been added near Sharpsburg to take the place of the hill that never ends. Bring it on. I will have cue sheets for the full century and for the century route with the famous bailout. Those who know me know that I rarely don't ride the most miles advertised. Gunther has said he is going to ride the bailout route. I am scheduling a rest stop near a market/gas station/mini mart/pizza joint every twenty miles or so because I like to eat. If you missed the Civil War Century or merely wish to experience it once again, come on out and keep me company. No go in rain or if greater than 60% chance. Call if in doubt. Country Ham and Hume at the Winery. This familiar Friday lunch ride stops by the Orlean Market which will offer an opportunity to pick up a Country Ham sandwich (or other victuals) to enjoy at the Phillip Carter Winery just up the road. A very interesting family history associated with this winery (formerly Stillhouse Winery). Check it out at: http://www.stillhousevineyards.com. We plan to picnic after the ride outside on the deck of the winery so pack a picnic to share (but don't bring in beer or wine - you can purchase the latter there). Bathrooms at the winery will be open at 11 AM before we head out as well as after the ride. IMPORTANT: We must park our cars close together at the bottom of the driveway near the gazebo. I will ask you to move your car if you spread out or park too close to the winery; i.e., we don't enhance the view for winery guests with cars strewn all over the field below the deck - at all. Please contact ride leader well before the ride with any questions and look to the PPTC website the day of the ride if the weather is iffy. The Plains, Rock Hill Mill, and Rectortown Rds. MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. Yet another beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. You will love the route. The descents are glorious as are the unpainted roads and the pasture scenery. Rock Hill Mill and Hopewell Rds are my favorites. There are a few rollers and a couple of longer, gradual ascents (to breeze down you must pedal up.) Total ascent is about 1,900 feet over 36 miles or 53 feet per mile. No restroom facilities at TYL. Rest stops at 9 and 20 miles, but facilities not reliable until the 20-mile break. Questions? Please call ride leader at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Fauquier County Rustic #6: Lunch at Naked Mountain Winery (paved/unpaved). Enjoy lunch and a scenic route to and from Naked Mountain Winery, mostly paved with about 10 miles ridden on quaint unpaved country lanes. Bring your lunch, or some bread and fruit to go with the cheese and sausage that they sell to go with their wine. The hilly rating is justified by the climb to get to the winery, as well as steep rises on the back roads. Touring or hybrid bikes 700c or 650b recommended. Mountain bikes are good, but since the ride is mostly paved I don't recommend heavy treaded mountain bike tires. I do recommend 700c x 28 or 32 and 26 x 1.50. Remember, coasting is bad for you. Also, as to multi-speed freewheels-"we don't need more than 1 stinkin gear". The route is not flat but no major climbs. One short but steep descent followed by an interest but short climb on Annapolis Rock Rd. The ride leader plans on using a 44X17 (70") gear. Regular road bikes and tandems welcome. Purcellville to Shepherdstown. Ready for a beautiful Fall ride. Tree leaves in full along the river. Three states and crossing the Potomac twice. How about a few late season miles? You can recover mid ride with fantastic food at the Shepherdstown Sweet Shop Bakery. Then you're ready for a little climbing.
