September 2007 Ride Schedule
Weekday Rides
September -- Mondays
B (H) * 20 * VA * 6 PM * Barcroft ES
Heavenly Hills of Arlington (reduction) . This is a shortened version of a longer 35 mile ride that cuts off most of the flat part in the front and gets you right into the hills! We will start from the Barcroft ES located at Wakefield Street and 6th and 8th Streets off George Mason Drive in the Barcroft Area of Arlington. Due to hills, traffic, and major route crossings (but mostly the hills), ride leader will lead at a "B" pace, but all "B"-like riders are welcome. The point of the ride is to get in some hills but also have fun and be safe simultaneously. Ride starts in Arlington and travels to McLean and back to Arlington where we gently segue to a couple of flat and downhill "mercy miles" at the end to help loosen the legs...ahhh, heavenly! Cynthia Priddy [diamrem<>aol.com] 703/501-8525 or 703/926-2899.
B B * 30ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. The ride will have longer options and cue sheets on Labor Day (See September 3 listing). No go in the rain or on wet roads. Check with leaders if the weather is questionable. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Boulevard. Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942 and Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] SND/EEE-MAIL.
September -- Tuesdays
D (MF) * 8/16 * VA * 6:10/6:30 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening "D"s . Just off I-495 at the Braddock Rd with exit heading west. We will be parking among other riders, mainly "A"s and "B"s, who have regular speed-work training, and will begin our ride after the departure of the "A" and "B" trainers. One hour or more biking in bike friendly environment to learn how to take moderate hills, observe speed and technique used by more advanced riders, and participate in bicycling atmosphere where dozens ride. Restrooms & live entertainment are available at the park. If heavy rain, biking would be canceled. Woody will lead the 6:10 group ( higher speed) and Shirley will lead the 6:30 (lower speed) group. Woody Lipinski [woodylipinski@cox.net] 703/764-2702.
C C * 14 * MD * 6 PM * Capital Crescent Trail (CCT)
Looking for a Relaxed, Social Midweek Ride? . If so come join us for this year's rides from Bethesda to Georgetown and back on the Capital Crescent Trail. We go to dinner afterwards at a moderately priced Bethesda restaurant. The ride leaves promptly at 6 PM from the far corner of the parking lot at Woodmont and Bethesda Aves. Bring quarters!! The meter maids are out until 10 PM. No go if it's raining, pavement is wet or storms are seriously threatening. Helmets required. Patrice Coss 703/521-6159 and Polly Choate [scooterpea@yahoo.com] 202/966-5571.
C C/B/BB * 22 * VA * 6 PM * Cameron Run Regional Park, Alexandria
Tuesday Night Ride . [NB: earlier start time!] The route loops through Alexandria and around Lake Barcroft over flat, rolling, and hilly terrain. All levels of riders are welcome to join us and set your own pace. We'll ride unless it's raining at start time. (Directions from the Beltway in Virginia : Take Exit 174 to the Eisenhower Ave Connector. R on Eisenhower Ave @ light. L into Cameron Run Park after 0.5 mile.) Please bring your helmets. Dan Stoltz [BikerDan1<>comcast.net] 703/684-5909 and Cynthia Priddy [diamrem<>aol.com] (w) 703/926-2899 or 703/501-8525.
B * 15 * MD * 5:30 PM * Colonnades at Kentlands
Kentlands Kaper . We will ride on Quince Orchard Rd, Rt 28 and Seneca Rd for a short stretch. Traffic can be heavy and the shoulder is not wide. I recommend helmet or bike mounted mirrors. Riders can use the bathroom of Gaithersburg Dental Care to change. (Directions: From I-270 take I-370 / Sam Eig Highway west to a right turn (North) onto Great Seneca Hwy and proceed 2-3 miles. Turn left at Quince Orchard Rd. Make the first left (at Exxon station) which is Booth St. Another quick left at Arch Pl and proceed 2 blocks to the parking lot. My office is at the corner of Granite and Arch; 8 Granite Pl. #22, Gaithersburg, MD 20878. Please use Mapquest as Yahoo or Google don't work for this address. There is a parking lot next to Famous Dave's BBQ. Call ride leader if in doubt or for directions. Gerry Chan [GeraldChan@aol.com] 301/977-7777.
B (MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead "A" ride below. Ride leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the "A" riders. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
B /A/AA * 20-30 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park
Downtown Breakaway . Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark. Ride leaves promptly from Mitchell Park, S St. NW, between 22nd and 23rd Streets. Ride leaders of various speeds will be ready to lead each week according to availability. If you'd like to help lead, please contact one of the leaders. B: Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] C: 301/367-2430, A/AA: Jonathan Mirsky [mirsky2207@hotmail.com] C: 202/320-1310, Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] C: 860/869-7610, Brian Freburger [freburgerbe@cox.net] C: 703/508-0282.
B /BB * 20 * MD * 6:05 PM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Another Weekday Option . With the dwindling sun this ride will only take place the first and second Tuesday September 4 and 11. There will be only one route with maybe a shortcut. Cue sheet available at http://home.comcast.net/~g_chan/. No go if raining or wet roads. Geng Chan [gchan@sandglass.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
A /AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). The plan is that the main group departs at 6:10 PM promptly, as any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (E.g., a 6:30 departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
September -- Wednesdays
C (MF) * 17/20 * VA * 6:XX PM * South Run Rec Center
Alternate Wednesdays in Virginia . The South Run ride (but not the Shirlington one) continues through September, on alternate Wednesdays--the 5th & 19th. See the particular listings under these dates for details. C. Ya There 703/FOR-BIKE.
B /BB/A * 22-30 * MD * 6 PM * Ivy Lane Office Complex (IVY)
Midweek Madcap . NOTE: 5 and 12 September ONLY due to failing daylight. Come out and enjoy a mid week ride through the Ag Center and Old Town Bowie. Terrain is flat to rolling. There will be several routes to choose from with no rest stops. Choose the ride/mileage that will ensure that you get back to the ride start before it gets dark. No go in rain/wet roads. Jeanette and Jay Howard [Tucohoward@comcast.net] 240/271-7001.
B /BB/A(MH) * 28 * MD * 5:30 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station near-SES
Sandy Spring Trainer . Please note the earlier start time for September. Expect a good work-out traversing the many hilly roads of the area. We'll try to hang together (strong riders can repeat part of a climb). Call if the weather's dubious. (Directions: The Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Station 4 is located at 17921 Brooke Road in Sandy Spring, MD 20860 (off of Rt 108 Between Sherwood ES and Sherwood HS).) A: Alan Muldawer [Alan AT Muldawer.com] 301/996-2526, BB: Bill Anderson [bjkanderson AT verizon.net] 301/570-7704.
September -- Thursdays
C /CC(MH) * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Socially Acceptable! . Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle. Route varies each week. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! Join the group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma St. Ride leaves promptly, and parking on Yuma is usually no problem. No go if raining or wet roads. Call ride leaders for more info. Get your weekend riding started here! Reggie Beard 240/899-4391 or Steve Brickell 301/946-2520.
B -AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113 and Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
B /BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . [NB: earlier start time!] This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
September -- Fridays
C C * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with two climbs to keep us honest. And plan on lunch after the ride at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 C: 202/997-2376 and George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
B /CC * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 5:45 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
Scenic Social! . A slightly earlier start to encourage a social pace...all the better for llamma and cow gazing. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. Don't shy away if you can't make the "official" start time; come later and cut the ride short (cue sheet always on ride leader's car), meeting us in the parking lot by dusk to talk about where dinner will be. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50. There is no sweep because of varying route lengths, but ride leader will make an effort to encourage group togetherness. CC: Brenda Ruby C: 301/602-4683, B: Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600.
A /BB * 25 * MD * 6 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
Rural Rumble! . Same ride as above with a later start to accommodate (encourage?) the speed demons among you. You know who you are so come and be in your element. A: Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600, BB: Bill Hermatch [bhermz@yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
September 1 Saturday
C * 25 * MD * 10:45 AM * Severna Park P&R
Annapolis and Sandy Point, Shorter Version . I can't decide if I want to go to Annapolis or the beach, so I found a way to visit both. Come bike along the B&A Trail (and other roads), to a beautiful beach on the bay. Ride stops in Annapolis then goes to Sandy Point State Park along the Chesapeake Bay. Be prepared to go for a swim if you really want to cool off on the middle of the ride (if it's hot enough). See great views of the Bay Bridge. Pickup point for shorter version of ride that starts in Marley Station; I may arrive at ride start late if original ride leaves late. (Directions: From I-95; take exit MD-100 East towards Glen Burnie. Take Exit 16A Ritchie Hwy south to Jones Station Rd. Turn right on to Jones Station Rd (next to Rite Aid at traffic light) and follow signs to the P&R lot on your right. Alternate is to take Rt 50 East towards Annapolis then Rt 2 North and look for the Ride Aid on the left.) Scott Zelazny [scott_z@myrealbox.com] 410/525-2591.
C * 36 * VA * 9 AM * Nokesville Community Park (NCP)
Nokesville Loop . The usual Nokesville ride; a nice easy loop to start off Labor Day weekend. Kathy Stoner 703/718-0890.
C * 40 * MD * 10 AM * Marley Station Mall (MSM)
Annapolis and Sandy Point . I can't decide if I want to go to Annapolis or the beach, so I found a way to visit both. Come bike along the B&A Trail (and other roads), to a beautiful beach on the bay. Easy for a 40 mile ride, if you can do my 34 mile ride to Sandy Point, then you can probably do this ride also. Ride stops in Annapolis then goes to Sandy Point State Park along the Chesapeake Bay. Be prepared to go for a swim if you really want to cool off on the middle of the ride (if it's hot enough). See great views of the Bay Bridge. Scott Zelazny [scott_z@myrealbox.com] 410/525-2591.
C C * 36/42 * MD * 9:30 AM * Olney Manor Park
Olney Country Roads . Take a jaunt through upper Montgomery County on a great Fall day. Not too hilly, just rolling. No go in rain or on wet roads. (Directions: Olney Manor Park is at 16601 Georgia Ave, Olney. There is a traffic signal on Georgia at the park entrance and the road on the other side of Georgia Ave is Emory Lane. Park in the first lots on the left.) Alison Andrews 301/208-0515.
C C * 61 * VA * 8:30 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
The Middleburg Fox Hunt 61 Ride . All levels are welcome to come ride this scenic and hilly ride through horse farm country. It will help those training for the PPTC century too. We will retire to the Market Salamander restaurant or possibly the Hidden Horse Tavern in Middleburg for a late lunch with much cold refreshment after the ride, in addition to hopefully celebrating a ride member's birthday one day early (not mine). This is a challenging ride in part because we ride with little shade towards the end, so plan to pace yourself and bring 2 water bottles. Note: There is a 41 mile option to this ride, but we cannot do it because Hibbs Bridge on Snickersville Pike is out; so if you are familiar with this ride and plan to cut off 20 miles, you can't. I'll bring another cue (likely a Meandering to someplace cue) for those who arrive and don't want the longer option. No go in steady rain or forecast for bad thundershowers in the area before we'd finish. Contact ride leader the morning of the ride if weather is iffy and earlier in the week if general questions. Brin Luther [brinlutherATcomcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.
B (H) * 58/49 * MD * 10 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
MarLu: The Easy Way . A scenic ride on the rolling hills around Sugarloaf Mountain and across MarLu ridge (long route only). This time we will take the easy way. No go in rain and/or on wet roads. Call leader if weather is doubtful. Peter Gruber [pmgruber@comcast.net] 301/581-0999.
B /BB/A (MH) * 65 * VA * 9:15 AM * Naked Mountain Vineyard
Three Blondes & Some Reds on a Naked Mountain . Doreen was stuck in the wee hours listening to the elephants and donkeys bickering the weekend of Mountain Mama and Peach Pickers so we are throwing a make-up celebration. Monterey being a tad far, we will cycle the Peach Pickers route. Following a climb over Naked Mountain we run along the beautiful Shenandoah - good pace line route - then up Rt 7 for a bit before the farms east of Berryville and back to the river and waterfall at Tilthammer. We will cross 50 again to cycle along the river to the low water bridge and back to Naked Mountain to party on the deck with whatever is brought to share and with wine from Naked Mountain Vineyards. Your "B", "BB", & "A" blondes are, respectively: Doreen Dotzler 301/325-6325, Mariette Vanderzon [Mariette<>sunmanagement dot net] 703/439-0175, Joyce Gearhart [Joyce<>Joycegearhart dot com] 703/298-2922.
September 2 Sunday
T ANDEM * 33/42 * MD * 9:30 AM * Southern HS (HAR)
Happy Harbor Ride . Rolling ride from Harwood to Deale with lunch at Happy Harbor. Southern Anne Arundel County. Joint WABITS/CRABS ride to Deale with lunch at a restaurant in Deale on the water. A nice ride with some pretty overlook views of the water on the longer route. The ride has some hills, but is not too difficult. The ride back after lunch is the same for both rides and is about 10 miles. The ride leaders will be doing the 42 mile ride. Please email or call before 7 AM if weather is iffy. Kathy and Frank Anders [velo2.anders@verizon.net] 410/628-4018.
D /C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington . NOTE: No ride on September 16. Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet at 11 AM on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library / Signature Theater on Campbell Ave (formerly named 28th St South.), Arlington 22206, to select a restaurant, then go to lunch at about 1 PM. See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 11 AM and 1 PM you are welcome to join the leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website, and passed out at ride). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow "C" pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more or fewer miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). Ifraining: lunch is at 11 AM; ride is no go. Ron Trueworthy [Ron_Trueworthy@Yahoo.com.] SND/EEE-MAIL.
C /CC * 40 (H) * VA * 10 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL) * 95°
The Plains and Middleburg to Landmark School & Hopewell Rds . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a challenging route for "C" riders but well worth it. Consider it a training ride for the club century - it is perfect for that and for the end of the season when we are in great shape. (I wish!). You will love the route through beautiful Virginia horse country. All the roads are paved, but the surface is very rough immediately after the tiny bridge a few miles out of Middleburg. (USE EXTREME CAUTION!) There is one long and gradual ascent, quite a few rollers, and at least for me one walker. And yet, you will have a great sense of accomplishment when beating the challenge. Total ascent is about 2,800 or 70 per mile. No restroom facilities at TYL, so please plan ahead. The rest stop is at 18 miles in Middleburg - full facilities in the Safeway. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader at home NLT 1 hour before ride start. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/585-1238.
C C(H) * 43 * MD * 9:30 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Enjoy a Scenic and Hilly Ride . ...through Montgomery and Howard counties. There is one rest stop at mile 26. I do not ride in the rain so call me on the day of the ride if the weather is doubtful. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515.
B * 36 * MD * 8 AM * Colonnades at Kentlands
B (MF) * 32/40+ * DC * 9 AM * Key Park in Georgetown
Sunday Revolution . We'll loop out through Potomac Village on MacArthur. Ride to the start to get 40 miles (if you want to ride down from Kensington call me). Ride leader will be riding Fixed Gear. You can too. Coffee at Dean and Deluca's after. Speedy says he will give discounts to everyone who rides at Revolution Cycles that whole day. No go in rain. (Directions: Key Park is located at the corner of the Key Bridge and M St NW. Parking down on K St.) Gunther Stern [gunther@gmcgt.org] 202/631-2323 and Robert "Speedy" Thomas [speedy@revolutioncycles.com] 240/535-9993.
B B/A * 65 * MD * 8:30 AM * Rileys Lock (RIL)
Wandering Around Poolesville and Other Hamlets . Since this is the second of three riding days for most of us, we won't be going up MarLu. I plan to wander around down towards the ferry, then up towards Dickerson and perhaps around Adamstown, before heading back from whence we came. A pleasant little wind down to the weekend. Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.
B B/A (MH) * 88, 66, 50 * VA * 9:15 AM * Columbia Furnace (CFR)
Lost River Classic . Let's gather at 9:15 to roll out by 9:30. George Moore created this stunningly beautiful route which has your cycling heart's desires: rushing rivers, awe inspiring mountains, cattle filled valleys and an ancient rock formation all along shaded, lightly traveled roads. We will stay Way out West, after the Naked Mountain ride Saturday, to get in a little hill work before the Civil War Century. After completing the Lost River Classic ride we plan to head over to the finish of the SM100 to see friends and family finish that ride. See the PPTC web site or the Google group site to see George's profile of the ride and directions. So join us for either ride, or stay out of the city for the weekend and join us for both. I hope Joyce and Doreen will join us for this ride also, but you'll have to check the web site for an update of this recent plan as I am the only one stuck here in the sweltering heat of August as this goes to print. Rick Studley [RickStudley<>earthlink dot net] 703/861-0213 and Mariette Vanderzon [mariette<>sunmanagement dot net] 703/439-0175.
A (MH) * 100 * VA * 9 AM * Trail's End Bike Shop, Purcellville
Tri-State Century . Ready to use those seasoned legs? Here's a tried and true century route with nicely spaced climbs and reliable rest stops. You can look forward to approximately 8,000 feet of climbing, the beautiful river across from Harper's Ferry, and wonderful pastries at the bakery in Shepherdstown. TJ Hegerich [TJpub <> RStarmail.com] c) 703/508-9744.
September 3 Monday

Mason Neck Meander . Just us for this close-in, popular ride through scenic neighborhoods and Mason Neck State Park. Lunch afterwards for those interested. Call ride leader if weather looks doubtful. Teresa Brooks [tacbrooks@cox.net] 703/971-3617 or C: 703/728-7635.
C C(MH) * 39-53 * VA * 9 AM * Tyler ES (TYL) * 95°/50%
Express - Non, Middleburg -Yes, Old Tavern - Maybe . Sometimes I lead the Middleburg More Non-Express on holidays, but this time we will do it in the opposite direction. In this direction it is feasible and interesting to go through Old Tavern, the mysterious other town listed on the Plains, Old Tavern exit from I-66. The ride will cover generally nicely rolling roads with a few hills thrown in for good measure. We will go through The Plains (optional rest stop), and the longer routes will go to Marshall with the option to extend through Old Tavern on the way to Marshall. After a rest stop in Marshall, we will head to Middleburg, where there is a great bakery (may not be open on the holiday) for another rest stop. Then back to the start, going over Hopewell Gap the long, gentle way. Possible post-ride lunch at Joe's in Gainesville afterwards if they are open (or maybe at another eatery). Helmets please. Cue sheets are available on the web at "www.pankin.com." Call leader if weather is questionable. Mark Pankin [mp@pankin.com] 703/524-0937.
C C/C * 34/44 * MD * 9 AM * Poolesville HS (POO)
Toolin' Around Poolesville . This ride will roll through shady back roads around Poolesville, and you can be done in time to get to your Labor Day picnics! This is a scenic ride through moderate rolling terrain, with one rest stop. Take your choice of Que sheets for either the 34 or 44 mile ride options. Johanna will be leading the "C" group and taking the 34 mile route, and Tom will lead the "CC" group taking the 44 mile route. No go in rain. CC: Tom Humphrey [kitefencer@comcast.net] 301/602-0434, C: Johanna Nathanson [myjnat@hotmail.com] 202/210-8599.
B * 57-65 * MD * 9 AM * Rileys Lock (RIL)
MarLu…or Not . This ride will bring back fond memories of rides along time-honored roads past Rileys Lock. For the adventurous, Marlu will be there for the taking. For those looking to omit this thrill, there is a detour to miss it. Either way, there are two rest stops along the route. People who go on this ride are encouraged to ride hard. They also should not be ashamed to socialize and be merry. The ride leader is promising to jump in the water for a swim at the ride's end. All are encouraged to stay for an old-fashioned tailgate at ride's end, featuring beer and authentic Wisconsin brats (with, of course, veggie options). Please bring a dish/ refreshment to share. Matt Birnbaum [noshbygosh@comcast.net] 202/360-3969.

Traditional Labor Day Metric . PPTC's end of summer classic is a large, multi-class ride drawing club cyclists and licensed racers together for a 64-mile circuit. We will roll out of Southern HS in Harwood and head to Governor Bridge Rd at a relaxing, conversational pace for the first six miles. Then, finish the ride at your pace - but bring your legs if you want to hang at the front. I will also have available a 50-ish mile version suitable for single-speed riders that will strip away a few of the steeper hills on the course. On these routes we will visit Galesville, Deale, Dunkirk, and Lothian in Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties. Couples on tandems, riders on beaters, shiftless riders on fixed-gears, racers and wannabies are all welcome and encouraged to come and ride. David Schneider and Jeff McDermott will all be on hand to distribute cue sheets - we will ride in the rain, but probably not in a downpour. (Without a Reference Manual? Directions: Southern HS is at the intersection of MD-2 Solomon's Island Road and Harwood Road. From Virginia, take the 495 Beltway to MD-4 east, to MD-408 east, to MD-2 north; from DC and Maryland, take US-50 east, to MD-424 south, to MD-2 south.) South Run Burke Lake Occoquan Loop . Please be prompt so that darkness doesn't befall us. This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a secluded bike path and the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. We then double back and after an energizing climb, we return on neighborhood streets and a secluded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sound of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. STARTING POINT: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield, VA. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.) South Mountain . Three generally moderate and steady well shaded climbs followed by tricky descents briefly describe this nice ride to South Mountain, PA. A few miles into the ride we do a 5 mile climb up Catoctin Hollow and Wigville Rd to arrive at Stottlemeyer. Then we head to Ft Ritchie and descend, continuing to head north, riding the flats on Mentzer Gap followed by some ups and downs along the ridge line to Mont Alto. A nice steady 5 mile climb follows Rt 233 up to a rest stop in South Mountain at mile 38. A little bit more climbing and then a long descent into Carroll Valley, passing through the quaint little town of Fairfield, PA. The third climb heads in the direction of Blue Ridge Summit at about 2 or 3 percent for 5 miles then a steep section at the end of the climb. After a short descent, the route turns SE, negotiating the remaining hills NE of Rt 550, to include 0.3 miles unpaved but very rideable on skinny road tires. After crossing Rt 15 just north of Thurmont, 10 flat miles offer the usual suspects anopportunity for a mad dash to the finish. VDO and Garmin seem to indicate about 6200 ft of climbing. Note: parts of this ride may intersect the course of the Civil War Century, which is held the same day. (Directions: 270N to Rt 15 north, go about 6 mi past the Motter Ave exit in Frederick and turn right on Hessong Bridge Rd. Lewistown ES 1.6 mi on right.) Orleans Loop . Warm up to the PPTC Century with this traditional PPTC ride that starts in nearby Marshall, but takes us over to Orleans market (a favorite rest stop) and Markum's Stribling Orchard, for some peaches to get us to the end. A Different Route to Delaplane . This shorter ride may come as a welcome break after yesterday's Century training ride. I developed this ride because I was so taken with a road introduced to me by Tom Roberson on one of his rides that I wanted to incorporate it into another (shorter) ride. The route goes to Delaplane by way of Pleasant Vale Road and goes along Rt 17 for about a mile, which has high speed traffic but does have a shoulder. The terrain is rolling with no steep climbs, but I put in the MH rating because there are hills. I ride at a true "CC" pace according to the PPTC so will probably be at the end of the group. Restroom facilities at The Plains are not always available so please make plans accordingly. The rest stop store in Delaplane has limited merchandise so be sure to bring snacks if you think you might need them, and adequate water. 50 Miles To Nowhere . We got this cue sheet from Hutch who says he got it from Karen B who may have borrowed it from ? But one thing is for certain - we won't be able to avoid all the hills! The route offers rolling roads, hills and scenic views of Montgomery and Howard Counties. One rest stop at Highs in Woodbine. As typical for our rides, Jay will be at a faster pace with Jeanette riding at a honest "B" pace. No go in rain or if roads are wet. Jay and Jeanette Howard [Tucohoward@comcast.net] 240/271-7001.

This ride invites ALL pace levels and naturally splits into smaller groups. The ride leader's pace is "CC"; a cadre of regulars know the route and will help those who are faster or slower. There will be no sweep. We'll regroup when we stop at the Takoma Park Co-Op for a quick bite. NOTE the DIFFERENT RIDE START because I'm not the regular leader and CAN is more convenient to me. SkyMass . Take a day off work & drive to Front Royal to join me on SkyMass. I've listed this as BB, which is what I plan to ride, but other levels are welcome too. This is a time honored ride that works just as well on a Wednesday, as on a Saturday. The climbs on Skyline are long, but more gradual. There is nothing gradual about Massanuttan on the way back. It's three miles of tough climbing. The remaining 30 to 40 miles back thru the valley are very very nice. (NB: the park entry fee is $8.) As this is a remote start and long ride not offering shortcuts, I am more sensitive about the weather; call if conditions are dubious. Front Royal - Columbia Furnace - Middletown Ride (Edinburg Gap) . This is a cue that I have had in mind for 3 or 4 years now... well, turns out that it is my incidental resurrection of PPTC classic referred to as the Edinburg Gap ride (in one form or another). But I'm putting a slightly different spin on it, to stop in Columbia Furnace. Anyway, it takes in some beautiful long runs through Fort Valley through Massanuttan Mt., and Back Rd. along the upper western Shenandoah Valley. A few hills, but nothing too strenuous. I have posted my version of the cue with a map to the PPTC web site. Wet conditions at the onset may be cause for cancellation of this ride, call if doubtful. Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727-0321.

Fauquier Rustic: Excursion to Rappahannock Cellars . About nine miles of this route are unpaved which provides some interesting connections. You'll ride beautiful Carrington Road tucked into a small hidden valley next to the ridge that is part of Little Cobbler Mountain; it becomes unpaved but makes a nice connection to Leeds Manor Road. On the way back you will discover Dixons Mill Rd that offers a view of Big Cobbler Mountain as you ascend to the foot of the mountain. There is a section of unpaved road that is new to me, Jericho Road, that makes a nice connection from Rt 522 / Zackery Taylor Hwy to Crest Hill Rd. In between you will visit one of Virginia's newest wineries, Rappahannock Cellars, that is on the far west part of Hume Road. Their wines are outstanding. Plan to bring something to eat to with that good wine, or bring something to complement the local cheese that they sell. There are no long climbs on this ride, but unrelenting short rises, a few steep, resulting in the hilly rating. No go in rain; check www.weather.com for Marshall VA and Flint Hill VA for forecast. Road touring bikes, hybrids, cyclocross bikes will all do. Mountain bikes also but, since the ride is mostly paved, you might not want to use aggressively treaded Mountain bike tires. I do recommend 700c x 28 or 32; 26 x 1.50. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062.

Skip one or most of the out-and-backs for a shorter ride or to catch up to the group. There are food opportunities but a long stretch with nothing so plan on bringing some snacks. A Meander to Middletown . This ride, designed by Dan Lehman, starts in VA and meanders through the Middletown Valley of MD. It tours several smaller towns including Waterford, and offers some great views of the valley. It has longish climbs leaving and returning to Lucketts, as well as the climb up from the Potomac out of Point of Rocks. Total climb is 5054 feet. Cue sheets are in the library; search for "Lucketts". Maps will be posted with the cues before the ride. No go in rain. Contact ride leaders on day of ride if in doubt. Tour du Thurmont Extended . Tour du Thurmont is still one of my favorite rides, so this just makes it a little bit longer; and a bit more hilly. The first 32 miles are still flat into Thurmont. Then the fun begins as we head up Rt 550 and Foxville / Deerfield, then over Highland School and back across Braddock Heights after a stop in Middletown. This time of year should be just about perfect for this ride. Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.

Go straight on Clopper Rd, even though it becomes a little tiny road. Go around 50 yards and you will see the train station on the right.) Mark and Nancy Gross [markgross@qmsdc.com] 301/320-4623.

Fall Farm Tour of Montgomery County . Have you ever wondered why DC has some of the best cycling in the region right on its doorstep? Cyclists are blessed with a 93,000-acre Agricultural Reserve just 30 minutes north and west of the city in Montgomery County. The Ag Reserve, Maryland's rural treasure, is home to hundreds of farms, orchards, galleries and a vineyard. Please join us on one of three scenic routes on lightly traveled roads around the Ag Reserve. Featured stops will be Kingsbury Orchard which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, Homestead Farm, another generations-old family orchard, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, home to 40 of the happiest pigs you'll ever see in one sty and Sugarloaf Mountain Winery (I intend to taste but not to swallow!). Please note, the 25-mile and 35-mile routes are linked together to form the longer ride. The 25-mile route, by itself is beautiful but only includes the animal sanctuary (at the end of a mile-long gravel road, but worth it!) and does not have a store. However, twenty five-milers canbranch off for a couple of miles at about mile 20 to stop at Homestead Farm, which is included on the 35-mile route. I will not lead the ride in rain, but will be available to hand out cue sheets and to talk about the Ag Reserve. Three Covered Bridges . This is one of the classic rides of the Washington metropolitan area. We will explore the northern Frederick valley passing through three covered bridges with uninterrupted views of the Catoctin Mountains. The terrain is rated moderately hilly, similar to this year's club century. One rest stop at mile 21; a couple of other options along the way at various points. No go on wet roads. Linda and Lanny Evans 301/590-0088.
C C(MH) * 42 * VA * 8:30 AM * Boyce ES, Boyce
Boyce 'N Berryville . The Boyce/Berryville ride goes through beautiful rural areas familiar to Club riders. By virtue of the nature of the topography and the roads, the ride is a relatively fast one through rolling, and later, quite hilly terrain, looping through West Virginia back to Berryville and Boyce. Riders should be aware that there are few viable routes to shorten the 42 mile distance and in August the heat and humidity are definite considerations: much of the ride is in full sun with few shady spots. Please plan to hydrate accordingly, as well as consider the pace and distance requirements for this loop in Clarke County. The ride will occur at ALL temperature levels, but won't go in rain. (Directions: I-66W from Beltway about 40 miles to exit Rt 17 / Delaplane" (after Marshall); L (West) @ T on Rt 50W for 9 miles; at first TL (Sheetz, potties), R on URt 340 for a few miles into Boyce; L at blinking light onto CO Rt 723; L in 0.2 miles into the school parking lot.) Lunch at City Dock . From Odenton to Severna Park onto WB&A Trail for 10 miles to Annapolis for lunch at Market Square, City Dock and tour through Eastport. Spectacular waterfront views, city traffic, trail riding, and some back country roads, this ride has it all. As this was rained out in June, let's hope for clear sky. Possibly we'll ride new section of trail due to open this month. (Directions: Beltway to 95 north, right ( east ) on 32, right 170 to Odenton, X 175, after 1 1/2 miles Piney Orchard SC an left at roundabout. Park near Dunkin Donut.) Jerry Collins 301/641-3415.

The Blue Ridger . Scale two mountains: Mt. Weather & Naked Mountain. The climbs aren't that bad and the descents are great fun. One rest stop around mile 20. Bring lots of water and a snack. Tour du Gatorade . This is just about the flattest century around, somewhere in between the Club Century and the Seagull Century. The ride has two rest stops, the first at 50 miles and the second at 80. There is an optional stop at mile 19. If it is warm, bring plenty of water as there is not much shade. No go if rain or the roads are wet. This will be a great way to stay in shape for the Seagull Century. Tim Guilford [tim@guil4d.net] C: 301/704-2723.

This ride is great enough to lead it twice this month! (Check w/ride leaders if the weather looks dubious.)
