The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. Longer options will be entertained / available by popular demand on December 24, depending on weather. No go in the rain or on wet/icy roads. Check with leaders if temp is below 40°. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Boulevard. Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] and Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942.
CC * 35 * MD * 11 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60s. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49°. If colder but sunny and calm please call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. If marginal or in doubt CALL! George Schneider [gbs319@juno.co] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or day of C: 202/997-2376.
ALL * 38/34/27 * VA * 10:15 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/30%
Charles Cushman Memorial Ride . This is a nice winter training ride, with some good hills, and it is remarkably traffic-free. There is one rest stop. Ride leader will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will basically be "leaderless" groups that will form according to pace and distance. There is usually a post ride lunch bunch. Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious. Roger Cubbage [jwcubbageatjuno.com] 703/534-4027 or 703/447-7169.
D * 15 * VA * 9:30 AM * National Capital Park Headquarters (HAI) * 45°/45%
Bagpipes and Kilts . We will cross the Potomac and take the Mt Vernon bike trail to Alexandria to view the Scots Walk, the parade that kicks off the Christmas season. Riders need not be Scots to ride but wearing "a wee bit of tartan" is permissible. We will meet up with the "C" ride at the Washington Marina before continuing on to Alexandria. Lunch will be at the Fish Market or a restaurant of the choosing of the group after the parade before returning. Bring helmets, locks and money. Call leader if weather is iffy before 8 PM on Friday night or before 8 AM the morning of the ride. Jack Marney [JA1776CK@aol.com] 301/942-0875.
D /C * 24 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Library, Arlington
Lunch at Anita's . A slow ride to Vienna and back along the W&OD trail. Warm up in Vienna with good Mexican food at Anita's. (Direction: Shirlington Circle on I-395 and the library is two blocks away from the highway at 4200 Campbell Ave. There's lots of free parking on the weekends, but it's crowded. There's an 800 car garage next to the library.) Alan Faber [alanfaber@mac.com] 703/931-1633.

Flat and Cold . If the temperature is below 40° at the ride start time, then the ride leader will show up at 1 PM for the ride (see 1 PM ride description). You might also want to monitor PPTC Listserv, since I may try to send a note if the ride might be go at 1 PM or be canceled due to weather. This is a simple ride that should not challenge too many people. It is basically a ride down to Pierce Mill and back. Except for a short distance from the Mormon Temple to East-West Highway, the entire ride will be on Beach Drive (except for an optional hill after leaving Pierce Mill, for those that cannot get enough of that kind of thing). Possible lunch after the ride at a restaurant nearby. Mike Divine [mikeandjoandivine@erols.com] 301/258-7820.

Flat and Cold (DELAYED) . If the temperature is below 40° at the 10 AM ride start, this ride start time will replace that for the 10 AM ride time, in the event (hopefully) that things warm up. However, if the temperature is still below 40° at 1 PM, this ride is also canceled. Mike Divine [mikeandjoandivine@erols.com] 301/258-7820.
B * 40ish * MD * 10 AM * International MS/Sligo Creek ES, Silver Spring
Silver Spring Winter Training . Joint ride with the "A"s. Please join us for a weekly training ride starting inside the beltway in MD. We will head to Potomac, shorter if it is colder (30ish miles), unless the weather is VERY cold (20ish miles) and then we will stay in Rock Creek Park. No rest stop for shorter rides. No go in rain or snow, wet or icy roads. Helmets please! This ride will leave every Saturday. All are welcome, but ride leader will maintain a "B" pace. A new tradition from last year! (Directions: Capitol Beltway / I-495: Exit 30/30B Colesville Rd / Rt 29 south, continue ~ 3/4 mile south, crossing Franklin and Sligo Creek Pkwy TLs as you enter downtown Silver Spring. Turn left at Dale Dr, then left at stop light on Wayne Ave, make an immediate left into the uphill driveway to the parking lot in front of auditorium for both the ES and the MS.) Suburban Surprise . We'll let conditions of the day set the agenda & mileage. No go if under 20° or raining at the start; check with the leader if conditions are otherwise dubious. John Carey [carey<>aya.yale.edu] 703/534-4613.
BB/A * 51 * MD * 10 AM * Damascus HS (DAM) * 40°/40%
A Trip Up Fire Tower . We rarely get up Fire Tower Rd, which is a shame. It's a nice little road that hooks up Hyattstown with Urbana. Today we'll rediscover this little delight. At the end of the ride we'll wind our way thru the new Megatropolis of Clarksburg. That may take some rerouting on my part, but we'll make it thru. Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.

The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. The Plains, Rock Hill Mill and Rectortown Rds . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. Yet another beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. You will love the route. The descents are glorious as are the unpainted roads and the pasture scenery. Rock Hill Mill and Hopewell Roads are my favorites. There are a few rollers and a couple of longer, gradual ascents (to breeze down you must pedal up.) Total ascent is about 1,900 feet over 36 miles or 53 feet per mile. No restroom facilities at TYL. Rest stops at 9 and 20 miles, but services not reliable until the 20-mile break. Questions? Please call ride leader at home NLT 1 hrs prior to ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Nokesville Picnic 36 Mile Ride . This is a great ride because there are not a lot of cues to follow and there are plenty of places to stop on the second half of the ride. Terrain is flat to gently rolling, but no matter what Butch says I think there is always a head wind in Nokesville. We'll leave 15 minutes before the BB/Bs start their training ride but everyone from either ride who wants to can go to Joe's afterwards. I'll be "leading" the ride from the back because that's what happens anyway and one might as well make a virtue out of riding slowly. Questions on weather (won't go if it's raining or snowing) or any other contact ride leader (please note that ride leader does not obsessively check email on weekends so call if it's really important). Highland's Horsey Hills . Low traffic, somewhat hilly, but always bucolic, Howard County roads are featured on this pleasant route. I figure on doing 42 but will have longer and shorter cues. If colder than listed temp but sunny/calm the ride may go ... call if any doubt. BUT if it is too cold for the road ride bring mountain bikes and dogs for a 1 1/2 hour spin on the nice trails in the park. After ride all are invited to ride leaders place a mile away for hot chocolate and hot tub (bring appropriate wear for tub and carrots for the horses). Note that the ride start time is TBA ... I will set the start time 3-4 days before the ride. I will post on the RIDE forum, send it to the google group or you can call or email me. (Directions: follow directions to SES but continue East on 108 about 5 miles to Hall Shop Rd (about 0.5 mile AFTER crossing Patuxent River). In Defense of Beverley Mill . Have you ever noticed the tall, stone, half-ruined building on the right side of I-66 as you go west, before you get to The Plains exit? That's Beverley (Chapman) Mill. Built in 1742 by the Chapman brothers, it was a successful mill for 200 years. During the Civil War, the mill was used to cure and distribute meat. After the first battle of Manassas, Confederates burned the meat and the mill to keep it from Union troops. Later the Beverley family purchased and restored the mill in the early 1870s. Beverley/Chapman's Mill ground cornmeal and flour for American troops during seven wars: the French and Indian, Revolutionary, War of 1812, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. The ride will offer an opportunity to stop and take a 10 minute walk through the woods to see the Mill. If you have any questions about the weather, please call ride leader before 8:30 AM on the day of the ride. Joan Oppel [oppel.js <> verizon.net] C: 703/328-1978.

It's a quaint little place that sells sandwiches and pastries among other selections. After the ride, those that want to stay for lunch or a warm beverage would have that option.
