BB * 30ish * MD * 10 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet/icy roads. Longer options will be entertained / available by popular demand on January 21, depending on weather. Check with leaders if temp is below 32°. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from MacArthur. Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] and Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942.
CC * 35 * MD * 11 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60s. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49°. If colder but sunny and calm please call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. If marginal or in doubt CALL! George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] or Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or day of ride C: 202/997-2376.
ALL(F) * 0-280 * DC * ANYTIME * Potomac Park, Hains Point (HAI)
Circle of Cycles, 24th Edition . To borrow from Joni Mitchell, "The cyclists, they go round and round; the cyclists' legs go up'n'down"--and that's about the size of it, along with the mixing of riders throughout the day (though it takes an earlybird or late hanger-arounder to catch sight of the DC Randonuts). Show up when you're good and ready, bringing some new Christmas goodies (gear, toys, treats) to show or share. Ride around with ALL types of riders--slow & chatty, smooth & swift, silly & squirrelly. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
CC * 31 * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID) * 20°
Bring in the New Year Ride, aka Ride off New Years Eve . Come ride a picturesque ride on all the usual roads - St. Louis, Atoka, Rectortown, Frogtown, Zulla - I'll stop here or someone will send an email that they know the route. I'll find a place open for lunch afterwards since not all will be open. All levels are welcome. No go in steady rain, sleet, or snow. Contact ride leader on cell phone the morning of the ride if weather is iffy and before the morning of the ride with other questions. Brin Luther [brinlutherATcomcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.
B * 35ish * MD * 10:30 AM * Veirs Mill Park RC (VMP)
Circle of Cycles Prelude . An honestly paced ride down to Hains Point and back to view the annual looping around Hains Point. This ride is notably non-hilly and the three mile loop at Hains Point is totally flat. A very easy route for fixed gear. Leader will most likely do a single loop before return - but of course anyone is welcome to do an many as they choose. No go if roads are wet or icy. Ken Sanford [sanfordken at yahoo.com] 301/942-5208.
BB/A * 42mi * MD * 10:30 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV) * 40°/40%
Looking for Reindeer . A fairly hilly ride that takes in Hipsley Mill, Watersville, Flag Marsh & Morgan Woodbine. One rest stop in Lisbon that could be very brief if it's very cold. Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.
ALL * 38/34/27 * VA * 10:15 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/30%
Charles Cushman Memorial Ride . This is a nice winter training ride, with some good hills, and it is remarkably traffic-free. There is one rest stop. Ride leader will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will basically be "leaderless" groups that will form according to pace and distance. There is usually a post ride lunch bunch. Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious. Paul and Linda Bankerd 703/548-8232.
CC * 34/39 * VA * 10 AM * The Plains (PLA) * 20°
Just the Plains Ride . This is another scenic horse country ride. We might head into Middleburg after the ride for lunch depending on what folks would like to do. Park next to the railroad tracks along the fence. All levels are welcome. No go in steady rain, sleet, or snow. Contact ride leader on cell phone the morning of the ride if weather is iffy and before the morning of the ride with other questions. Brin Luther [brinlutherATcomcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.

Flat and Cold . If the temperature is below 40° at the ride start time, then the ride leader will show up at 1 PM for the ride (see 1 PM ride description). You might also want to monitor PPTC Listserv, since I may try to send a note if the ride might be go at 1 PM or be canceled due to weather. This is a simple ride that should not challenge too many people. It is basically a ride down to Pierce Mill and back. Except for a short distance from the Mormon Temple to East-West Hwy, the entire ride will be on Beach Dr (except for an optional hill after leaving Pierce Mill, for those that cannot get enough of that kind of thing). Possible lunch after the ride at a restaurant nearby. Mike Divine [mikeandjoandivine@erols.com] 301/258-7820.

Flat and Cold (DELAYED) . If the temperature is below 40° at the 10 AM ride start, this ride start time will replace that for the 10 AM ride time, in the event (hopefully) that things warm up. However, if the temperature is still below 40° at 1 PM, this ride is also canceled. Mike Divine [mikeandjoandivine@erols.com] 301/258-7820.
B * 40ish * MD * 10 AM * International MS/Sligo Creek ES, Silver Spring
Silver Spring Winter Training . Joint ride with the "A"s. Please join us for a weekly training ride starting inside the beltway in MD. We will head to Potomac, shorter if it is colder (30ish miles), unless the weather is VERY cold (20ish miles) and then we will stay in Rock Creek Park. No rest stop for shorter rides. No go in rain or snow, wet or icy roads. Helmets please! This ride will leave every Saturday. All are welcome, but ride leader will maintain a "B" pace. A new tradition from last year! Please join us for lunch afterwards in "new" Silver Spring downtown. (Directions: Capitol Beltway / I-495: Exit 30/30B Colesville Rd / Rt 29 south, continue ~ 3/4 mile south, crossing Franklin and Sligo Creek Pkwy TLs as you enter downtown Silver Spring. Turn left at Dale Dr, then left at stop light on Wayne Ave, make an immediate left into the uphill driveway to the parking lot in front of auditorium for both the ES and the MS.) Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] 301/367-2430.
BB/A * 45mi * MD * 10:30 AM * Rileys Lock (RIL) * 40°/40%
Short Little Jaunt . Plan on a short little jaunt in the general direction of Dickerson & Sugarloaf, but not too far beyond that. Get your new year started right with a quality ride, hopefully with all our friends! Karen Berlage 301/963-1482.
A * 40-50ish * MD * 10 AM * International MS/Sligo Creek ES, Silver Spring

C/CC * 34 (MF) * VA * 10:15 AM * Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park * 44°/50%
A Country Quiet . MOSTLY FLAT AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND ON THIS NEW ROUTE. This beautiful ride takes us through the tranquil countryside south of Nokesville on many country roads - a few recognizable from other rides. The turn-around point is the Bristerberg store, which is a familiar stop for PPTC. Traffic is minimal and the route is mostly flat but not without a few rises here and there. The Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park features six notable buildings: the courthouse, jail, a one-room schoolhouse, the old Union Church, a wood cabin, and a wood-framed smokehouse. The park is open to tour after the ride. Total ascent is about 1,000 feet over 34 miles or only 30 feet per mile. Restroom facilities at the park may not be available; Porta-john at Aden grocery store at 5 miles. (Directions: Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA, immediately adjacent to Brentsville Presbyterian Church. (Please use Mapquest or similar for directions from your home.) If weather is doubtful, call rideleader at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or C: 703/585-1238.
CC * 20+ * MD * 11 AM * Greenbelt Metro
Ag Center Loop . We will spin through the Ag Center up to the Patuxent Wildlife Center. A nice and easy ride. No go on wet roads or starting temps at 30° or below. We'll meet at the Greenbelt Metro in the Reserved Parking Area in the big lot. Johanna Nathanson 240/432-3496 or 202/210-8599.
CC * 40ish * VA * 10 AM * Middleburg ES (MID) * 20°
This is IT Ride . Last ride before foot surgery on January 10, so ride leader is going to pick a route that will give her something to think about and look forward to doing in the Spring (it better be Spring - the surgeon didn't say Summer). We'll hit a local establishment after as always. All levels are welcome. No go in steady rain, sleet, or snow. Contact ride leader on cell phone the morning of the ride if weather is iffy and before the morning of the ride with other questions. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT (it's taken by church parking on Sundays). You can park on the Middleburg streets near the school (especially on North Madison St) and cycle / walk over to the Pink Box tourist information house, where the ride will begin from, across the street from the Red Fox Inn's parking lot. Brin Luther [brinlutherATcomcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.
B * 28 * VA * 10:30 AM * Lucketts Community Park
Lucketts to Lovettsville ATB Loop . Want to stay warm on a December day? Get out your ATB and come out for a beautiful ride with some good hills. We'll travel through the countryside on mostly dirt/gravel roads. The start is in Lucketts with a rest stop in Lovettsville. Temperature at start must be at least 35° and no go if 30%+ chance of rain. Call leader if weather is iffy. Follow the directions to LUK (Lucketts Community Center) in the PPTC Reference Manual, but coming from Leesburg, just before you get to the light in Lucketts, look for the commuter parking lot just before the school on your right. If coming from MD, go through the light in Lucketts and then look for the parking lot just after the school on your left. Janice Stoodley [janice.stoodleyATverizon.net] 703/532-3021.

RIDE! to the Annual Meeting (and maybe back, too) . You can make this a bi-modal ride: (take the Metro to Braddock Rd, ride to Bethesda, ride to the Bethesda Metro, Metro home); drive to George Washington Jr HS in Alexandria (on Mt Vernon Ave west of the Metro stop) and ride to the Metro stop; or drive to the Sailing Marina -- or even join us somewhere en route along the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail. The ride goes down the Mt Vernon Bike Trail to West Potomac Park, through the Park and on the trail along Rock Creek Drive to Georgetown, then under the Whitehurst to the trailhead of the Capital Crescent Trail, where we will join Joan Oppel and Leslie Tierstein's group (which started in Arlington) at 11 AM. From there, we'll all ride together on the Capital Crescent Trail to Bethesda, then ride 2 miles through ritzy Bethesda neighborhoods to the Annual Meeting on River Rd. We'll wind through Arlington, then meet up with Steve Palincsar's group at the Capital Crescent Trail in Georgetown at 11 AM and head for Bethesda on the Capital Crescent Trail and suburban Bethesda roads. Last year it was cold in the morning, then warmed up for the day - a typical D.C. winter day that made for pleasant riding. If you want to bring something to eat for the meeting, email the ride leaders - at least one of us should have extra room in our panniers. Mileage is approximate round trip. If you have any questions about the weather, please call ride leader before 8:30 AM on the day of the ride. Hellbent on Hills! . It is a new year, but let's visit a nasty little friend that we all know and love. The ride that is now a classic. This ride will work on your strength training and keep you warm. The ride is sheltered by houses and trees and the ride is slower because of the hills with an average of 14.5-15.5. There will be no official rest stop (but many options if one is desired), but there will be regrouping after hills. The route can be made shorter or longer depending on the group at the ride start. The ride has around 3400ft of climbing and most of it in Arlington. To check out the route go to Routeslip for elevation. http://routeslip.com/map.php?map=11177 . Nokesville Picnic 36 Mile Ride . This is a great ride because there are not a lot of cues and there are plenty of places to stop on the second half of the ride. Terrain is flat to gently rolling, but no matter what Butch says I think there is always a head wind in Nokesville. We'll leave 15 minutes before the "BB/B"s start their training ride but everyone from either ride who wants to can go to Joe's afterwards. I'll be "leading" the ride from the back because that's what happens anyway and one might as well make a virtue out of riding slowly. Questions on weather (won't go if it's raining or snowing) or any other contact ride leader (please note that ride leader does not obsessively check email on weekends so call if it's really important). Gandhi's Essential Real Ride . A variation of the ubiquitous "Real Ride from the Real City," with full credit to Al Robertson: I want to see people out on the bike they cherish most. It doesn't matter if it's a road bike, a cross bike, a mountain bike, a coaster-brake paperboy bike, or whatever - the point is to ride the one bike that has the most meaning to you. Your intrepid ride leader will be on his 1997 Marin mountain bike with bigger tires, so the speed will be more moderate. Please join us for this fun ride that starts and ends in the District! One rest stop for warming beverages. No go if icy roads, deep standing water, steadily falling rain or snow, or dangerously cold temperatures - otherwise, we roll! Leader will post late-breaking updates to the PPTC website and to the Pedalers Google Group. Ride starts at Gandhi Statue, across from the Embassy of India at the confluence of Massachusetts Ave NW, Q St and 21st Sts (one block west of Dupont Circle Metro station). Lunch near the end of the ride at Chipotle Mexican Grille restaurant (good food for "the masses") in Reston. New and prospective club members are welcome and encouraged to participate.
