B/BB(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead "A" ride below. Ride leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the "A" riders. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). Early April is a special treat: big old cherry trees decorate part of the route! Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.
A/AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3 mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). The plan is that the main group departs at 6:10 PM promptly, as any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (E.g., a 6:30 PM departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.
B/BB/A * 20-30 * MD * 6:30 PM * Ivy Lane Office Complex (IVY)

BB(MH) * 28 * MD * 6 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station (near-SES)

Please note the location. (Directions: The fire station is less than one-quarter mile from Sherwood ES (SES). From the elementary head east toward Sandy Spring (away from Olney) on Rt.108. Go through one light and make the next left on Brooke Road. The fire station is set back from Rt 108 about 100 yards on Brooke Rd.) Call if weather is questionable. B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10 PM, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL and
Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo .com] 703/241-9113.
B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups - with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60°. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49°. If colder but sunny and calm please call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 C: 202/997-2376 and George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
CC/C * 14/18/21/25 * MD * 6:10 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
Friday Scenic Social! A slightly earlier start to encourage a soc pace ...all the better for llama and cow gazing. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. Don't shy away if you can't make the "official" start time; come later and cut the ride short (cue sheet always on ride leader's car), meeting us in the parking lot by dusk to talk about where dinner will be. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. There is no sweep because of varying route lengths, but ride leader will make an effort to encourage group togetherness. Brenda Ruby [pptc_cc_riders@yahoo.com] C: 301/602-5683 and Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600.
BB/B * 25 * MD * 6:30 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
Friday Scenic Social! . Same ride as above with a later start to accommodate (encourage?) the speed demons among you. You know who you are so come and be in your element. Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600 Bill Hermz [bhermz@yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.
C(MF) * 17 * VA * 6 PM * South Run Recreation Center * 50%
South Run Burke Lake Occoquan Loop . Here is a new ride that we will try during the week. It is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a secluded bike path, then the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. We then double back and return through neighborhood streets and a secret bike path along Lake Mercer. The start and finish are very peaceful with only the sound of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center (off the Fairfax County Pkwy at 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield); well behind the Rec Center on the gravel car park adjacent to the indoor soccer field (previously the indoor horse arena.) Access the starting point by going through the lower car park adjacent to the rec center.) If weather is doubtful, call ride leader before 5:30 PM the evening of the ride. Teri Larriva 703/644-0884 or C: 703/629-8847.

The Annapolis Loop . I will be between jobs and can think of no better way to celebrate than to ride It has been awhile since I have done this ride and even longer since I have lead it as a club ride. This will be a preview of the ride held later this month. From Ellicott City we'll head down to Savage and toward the Ag Center, Old Bowie, and Crofton to Annapolis. We pick up wraps near City Dock and eat on the bulkhead watching the boats. From Annapolis we head up the B & A Trail and the BWI Loop to Arundel Mills for an ice cream break at Coldstone Creamery. From there it is about ten miles back to the start. We'll ride at a moderate to slow "B" pace as my intention is to ride with someone, not drop anyone doing a "B" pace (Around 14 mph). (Directions: Use the above address in Ellicott City, MD 21043 in MapQuest.) Bathrooms and water available here as this is my home. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.

Old Town Alexandria and Back . I will be between jobs and can think of no better way to celebrate than to ride. From the recreation center parking lot, we will head down Beach Drive over the 14th St Bridge and continue down the Mt Vernon Trail to a rest stop/lunch in Old Town. We'll head back via the Mt Vernon Trail to the Key Bridge, the Capital Crescent Trail and neighborhoods to Garrett Park and the recreation center. Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.
C(MH) * 22 * MD * 10:30 AM * Accokeek Firehouse * 40°/40%
Chinese Lunch Ride . There are a few rollers and couple huffy hills on this ride but none after the Chinese lunch buffet rest stop which comes at mile 16. The buffet has a reputation for being fresh and has several dishes to choose from, such as seafood, meat, and vegetarian, at a cost of around $7. Joint ride with OHBTC. (Directions: From the beltway go 10 miles south on Rt 210. Turn right on Livingston / Accokeek / Rt 373 at light. (B&J Carryout is at this intersection.) Go about one mile on Livingston road and the firehouse is on the right. Please park on the perimeter of the rear parking lot.) Don't forget bike lock. The Three County Tour . I will still be between jobs and while I love to ride, hopefully I will have a job since I like to eat and have a roof over my head even more than riding. We'll head west from Howard County and then hit Carroll County and Frederick County. We will find an interesting place for lunch in Frederick and then head back. We'll ride at a moderate to slow "B" pace as my intention is to ride with someone, not drop anyone doing a "B" pace (Around 14 mph). We'll meet at the end of the park road near Field 1. Port-a-pots are available. (Directions: From Rt 29 take I-70 west to Exit 83, Marriottsville Rd. Go right at the end of the exit and then left on Rt 99 / Old Frederick Rd at the traffic signal. Park is on the left. For MapQuest use 11685 East Old Frederick Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104.) Bob Bernstein [pptc_b_riders@yahoo.com] 240/593-2539.
C(H) * 26.5 * VA * 10 AM * Lucketts Community Center (LUK)
Luck 'N Love . This ride, designed by Dan Lehman, starts in Lucketts goes over the mountain to Lovettsville and then to the lovely historic village of Waterford which is a National Historic Landmark. As is the case in most of western Loudoun county, development is coming to this rural area – there are a dozen more homes on the route than there were last year but, still, this is very pretty and there are great views into Maryland (including the Dickerson incinerator smokestacks and Sugarloaf Mountain beyond.) One big uphill going out and coming back but the rest is mostly rolling. Shop for antiques in Lucketts at the end. Catherine Kitchell [ckitchell@earthlink.net] 301/657-9793.
C(F) * 32 * MD * 10 AM * Fell's Point, Baltimore
Scott's famous Baltimore Waterfront Ride . Ride through Fells Point, Canton, Dundalk, Edgemere, Millers Island and a park on the Chesapeake Bay (North Point State Park). Real easy for a 32 mile ride, exceptionally flat, and more rural than you probably think. Excellent views of the Chesapeake Bay (bring a camera!). (Directions: From I-95 North, use the exit for I-395 or Russell St and take a right onto Pratt St. Go through the Inner Harbor (stay to the right) and make a right onto S President St (Christopher Columbus Blvd). Go left on Fleet St and then a right on S Broadway. Recommended parking locations are in Fells Point itself (usually not too bad this time of the day on a Sunday) or the streets east of Fell's Point (S Broadway) and south of Eastern Ave.) Just arrive early enough to ride to ride start from parking location if not parking in Fells Point itself. Meet at the bottom of S Broadway. Scott Zelazny [scott_z@myrealbox.com] 410/525-2591.

Cue sheets will be available for each route and will show locations of rest rooms and places to stop for food. The Ice Cream Factory and Cafe in Brandywine is sure to be a favorite stop. Steve Palincsar [palincss@his.com] 703/548-1585.
B * 40ish * VA * 9 AM * Vienna Community Center (VCC)
Great Falls/River Bend Variation . Since there's a longer drive out to Nokesville for the picnic on Sunday, here's a closer in warm-up ride for the day before. Closer in, sufficiently challenging hills (Great Falls portion), but not quite as rural/scenic as further out west. Wet roads on those hills will mean CANCEL. Patrick Dominick [pld1 AT cox.net] 703/927-5986.
B * 52 * MD * 9:30 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
Detour to Thurmont . This ride goes through the rolling terrain around Frederick and Thurmont, with only a few short climbs. Rest stops in Detour and at the Thurmont Sheetz. No restrooms until mile 33. No go in rain or if roads are wet. Jeffrey Anspacher [janspacher@hotmail.com] 301/775-5803.

10th ANNUAL FREE FOR ALL PICNIC
On a cold January day in 1997 John Zebatto and Butch Counts came up with the idea of having a large multi-class, clubwide ride and picnic. From its meager start on April Fool's Day (20 total riders), it has blossomed into the second largest PPTC event, regularly drawing 300 or more riders of all abilities; members and non-members, fast or slow, young or old. A great way to meet new friends. At least three marriages and many other relationships have started with meetings here.
The Club will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, and other special veggie sandwiches, drinks, condiments, and all picnic supplies. As always, there is the famous PPTC Potluck, so bring a dish to share.
Picnic starts at high noon, rain or shine. Rides range from 11 to 51 miles on flat to gently rolling country roads, special guest Maryland ride leaders Karen Berlage, Larry Kessler, John “Hutch” Hutchinson, Brenda Ruby, Barbara Good, Catherine Kitchell and Sigrid Haines -- so come out and support your Maryland friends.
Volunteers will be needed to help with the grilling, set up, and clean up. If you would like to volunteer (there will be a volunteer ride), or have any questions, contact Debbie Reynolds at Deb_cla@hotmail.com.
Directions and parking: Nokesville is located approximately 40 minutes from the Beltway, in southern Prince William County. Allow some extra time, as rides will start promptly at the advertised time. From the Beltway, take exit 9, I-66 West 20 miles to exit 44 (second exit for Rt 234 South). After 5 miles, exit onto Rt 28 South / Nokesville Rd. Continue 4.5 miles to left at traffic light at Fitzwater (shortly after the dancing cow and pig). After left on Fitzwater, continue one mile and turn right at a T onto Rt 646 / Aden Rd. In 0.8 miles, turn into Nokesville Community Park on the right.
Parking: To help you find your ride and leader please park in the areas described below, and look for the placard indicating your ride on top of the leaders' vehicles.
A: Take3rd right and park
BB: Take 2nd right; bear left to park
B/Fixee: Take 2nd right; bear right to park
CC/Tandem: Take 1st right and park
C+D: Continue through and park in the lot at the bottom of the hill near the soccer fields

The Familiar . Come on out for a spin, and since I've chosen not to drive to Nokesville and support the crew, gears may desirable on this particular jaunt. A familiar route from Sherwood that adds some "fun" miles en route to Highs and back. We've been dishing this ride out for many years; just not offering it up quite enough. Towpath and Lunch at Harpers Ferry . Park at the picturesque Victorian train station on Rt 28 in the town of Point of Rocks. The bike ride itself is on the towpath to Harpers Ferry and back--an historic stretch where the Potomac cuts through the first line of the Appalachians: Catoctin Ridge and South Mountain. On the way to Harpers Ferry, there are great views of the islands and rapids of the river, as well as the old canal works and the abandoned mill town of Weverton. Hybrid or ATB tires are best, but it can be navigated on a touring bike. Bring a bike lock and money for lunch. Leader is planning to go rain or shine--it can be sunny up the river while it's raining in Washington. If it's raining cats and dogs at ride start, we'll explore other options. Wild & Wonderful . Join us for this beautiful ride through the Maryland and Virginia countryside with a brief visit to the panhandle of West Virginia, where you can grab a tasty pastry at the Sweet Shop Bakery in Shepherdstown. Don't worry about the calories as there is nearly 7000 feet of climbing, including three significant climbs and plenty of rolling countryside, to offset them. Waypoints include the scenic towns of Lovettsville, Brunswick, Burkittsville, Sandy Hook, Harper's Ferry (we'll stay on the MD side of the Potomac), Shepherdstown, Sharpsburg, Middletown and Jefferson. Notable climbs are Gapland, Hoffmaster, Reno Monument and Marlu Ridge ‘the easy way'. Bring your climbing legs and proper gearing for this ride that not only features some challenging climbs, but also explores some roads and towns, not to mention a state, not oft visited on our rides. Kent Island Social Encore . This was a very enjoyable and successful social ride both times I lead it last year. Skip one or most of the out-and-backs for a shorter ride or to catch up to the group. There are food opportunities but a long stretch with nothing so plan on bringing some snack. Ayrshire is open to the public on two or three occasions a year and this ride is in conjunction with the spring Loudoun County Farm Tour. If we are lucky the manor house will be open. One attraction they now have that wasn't open last time I led a ride there is the dairy that collects milk from a rare breed of cow, and you can sample the very rich and high-butterfat milk. We arrive at the farm about 17 miles into the ride and one can easily spend an hour seeing the sights. Better take a sandwich, they may not have food concessions. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible, major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. Lee's strategy that fateful day in July included a flanking maneuver by JEB Stuart, but he had his hands full with the newly formed Union cavalry and oneCaptain Custer (brevetted as a Brig. Gen. only days before by Pleasonton). You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. Please check with ride leader the morning of the ride by cell phone if any questions about the weather. Joan Oppel [oppel.js<>verizon.net] C: 703/328-1978.

Western Maryland Rail Trail . Enjoy a FLAT ride through beautiful Western Maryland countryside. This is a paved trail that is 23 miles long and runs parallel to the C&O canal. There are plenty of rest stops in Hancock, MD which is ten miles in to the trail. The trail had plenty of shade and clean porta potties at the parking area in Big Pool. All can be assured that we'll be hitting some back roads through Northwest DC and Montgomery County, including a long stretch on Beach Dr through Rock Creek Park leading to some meandering in Cleveland Park for the ringing of the bells of the National Cathedral signaling the ride's final mile. Tailgate at the ride leader's condo afterwards. I'll supply a pasta dish for carb recovery. If people are interested, I can get them $5 guest passes for using the heated pool afterwards. Plenty of places to shower for folks interested. (Directions: Sutton Place (now Balducci's) is located at 3201 New Mexico, off Cathedral Ave, near American University.) B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 to 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. CC/C * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! A slightly earlier start to encourage a socia pace...all the better for llama and cow gazing. D * 15-20 * VA * 10 AM * Bull Run MS, Haymarket
Lunch at The LeGrange . First, we will do some street loops in the communities of Piedmont and Heritage Hunt, and then we will be off to the newest winery in VA "The LeGrange." Bring along whatever victuals you like to have washed down with great wine, (the winery does have cheese and crackers for sale and the selections are usually enough for two). The communities we will be riding in are quiet wide streets, but the five miles out of Haymarket to the winery are on busier roads so you should be comfortable with riding with cars and occasional trucks. The winery is accessed by Rt 55 and Antioch Rd out of Haymarket, both are common to many local and PPTC routes, so these are roads that do have a bicycle presence. Terrain is flat to mildly rolling hills. (Directions: Follow the direction to Gainesville Tyler ES (TYL) via I-66, except you will turn right at the light just before Tyler elementary onto Catharpin Rd. The school will be in about 1.5 mile on the left. If you are approaching Tyler on Rt 55 from the west (through thetown of Haymarket), you would drive past Tyler School and turn Left at the next light, Catharpin Rd and proceed to the start as per above.)Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net ] 703/743-5062.

B&BvB . Beat the heat & Balance family v. Biking by joining us on a relatively short and relatively early ride that will get you home in time for those pesky non-Biking demands life makes. The ride leaders will lead the 40 mile ride, but offer a shortcut for a 29 mile version for those who need to hurry home. Both rides offer lots of short ups and downs but no epic climbs, some good long flattish stretches and beautiful countryside so everyone gets a great ride without leaving you wrecked for the day. Nothing but a typhoon will keep us home, and we'll try to get up early enough to have some coffee at the start to help you get going. Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Up Gambrill We Will Go . Bring you climbing gears and legs for this ride. "BB"s and others are also welcome. After a relatively flat start, we get tortured going up Shookstown Rd then continue the climb up Gambrill Park Rd. We follow the ridge, then after one mile of a slow, narrow, winding downhill, the road opens up so that 50 mph is a possibility. Next we turn our attention to suffering up HARP HILL. After descending Harp we can rest in Wolfsville--hopefully the store will be open, but you never know so bring plenty of liquid. Leaving Wolfsville, we climb by way of Foxville-Deerfield Rd. before the long downhill to Thurmont. The remainder of the ride is on rolling terrain over familiar roads, but tired legs may require more than the usual effort. There will be an optional rest stop in Wolfsville at mile 21, and a rest stop in Thurmont at mile 36. No go if it is raining or roads are soaked. If I am feeling kind, I may bring an option to avoid Harp Hill and eliminate 3 miles. Jeffrey Anspacher [janspacher@hotmail.com]301/775-5803 andKaren Berlage 301/963-1482.

CSC Invitational (Clarendon Cup) . A day at the races. Meet at the corner of Washington and Wilson Blvd.s in Arlington, across the street from the Silver Diner. We meet up around 7:35 AM. We will leave at 7:45 AM Sharp. They have done the races different this year, so the ride needs to be done earlier to watch the women's race. The route will do the usual Hills in Arlington. We should get back around in time to watch the Women's race. Ideally one would bring some extra clothes to change into to watch the races, eat food, and buy cycling stuff (some great deals on this!). Excursion to Three Fox Vineyards . This is a paved companion ride to the Fauquier Rustic paved/unpaved ride starting in Marshall that Tom Roberson has orchestrated. Please note that this ride starts in The Plains. We will meet up with the folks from the other ride at one of the smaller local vineyards in Delaplane for our lunch/rest stop at 16.5 miles. Three Fox Vineyards has terrific grounds with a huge meadow with scattered tables and hammocks, some on the edge of the stream about 300 yards down the hill. The Vineyard produces remarkable Italian Tuscan style wines. The wine may be like Tuscany, but the route is pure Fauquier County Virginia with the typical rolling terrain of this area. Except for the winery entrance there are no really steep rises or long climbs. Be sure to take advantage of bathroom facilities on your way out as you pass by Haymarket, as there are none at the start. If you want to buy food to take to the winery, arrive early enough to get something from the nice folks at the Farm Market (on corner across fromthe service station, good sandwiches) or bring your own. The winery also has some food available in the way of cheeses, etc. If you plan to participate in the wine tasting ($4.00), please RSVP by Saturday afternoon to Tom Roberson, 703/743-5062, or email roberson3084@comcast.net. Check www.weather.com and search Delaplane, Virginia for weather conditions.Barbara Binder [bbinder743@aol.com] 703/385-9669 or 703/309-3757.

Fauquier Rustic . Paved/unpaved excursion to Three Fox Vineyards. Visit, and lunch at, one of the smaller Virginia vineyards in Delaplane, Virginia, which produces remarkable Italian Tuscan style wines, and boasts huge grounds with tables and hammocks. The wine may be like Tuscany, but the route is pure Fauquier County Virginia, with unique unpaved county lanes combined with beautiful rolling paved roads. While there are no long hills, the hilly rating is deserved because of short steep rises you will encounter on the unpaved roads and including a steep rise at the winery itself. Bring food to go with the wine, or bring fruit and bread to go with cheese and sausage they have for sale at the winery. If you plan to participate in wine tasting ($4.00) please RSVP to leader by afternoon the day before. The winery likes to have a "heads up" on groups of 10 or more. Check www.weather.com and search Delaplane, Virginia for weather conditions. Tom Roberson [roberson3084@comcast.net] 703/743-5062.

He'll ride a leisurely pace at the rear of the group and leave no one behind. Lunch is at the Olney Ale House near the finish. Bear and Bull . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a new and sometimes challenging ride out of Tyler ES to points north, thereby avoiding the long hill into The Plains. The ride includes country roads along woods and pleasant pastures. When Ed Kerr and I pre-rode the route on May 4, a bear was spotted at mile 13. Later, Ed had a stare-down with a bull calf that had escaped from the pasture. BOTH TRUE! Me, I did not try to out-distance either the bear or the bull, but I made a point of keeping Ed between me and the critters. (I didn't have to outrun the bear, only to ride faster than Ed.) The ride has many moderate hills but is also refreshingly flat in many places. One rest stop at 16 miles. Total ascent is about 1,900' over 34 miles or 55' per mile. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader before 8:30 the morning of the ride. Len Wilkinson [len.wilkinson@verizon.net] H: 703/455-0368 or 703/585-1238.
