Weekday Rides

March -- Mondays

BB * 30ish * MD * 10 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE) * 32°
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet/icy roads. Check with leaders if temp is below 32°. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942 and Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] SND/EEE-MAIL.

March -- Tuesdays

B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 5:45 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Again, with the March time change to DST (and the coming of the cherry blossoms in the Leesville Rd area!), we'll begin our season of evening riding. Some folks will be accumulating base miles, and shaking off the pounds of hibernation; others will probably be feeling frisky already--damn them! The park is situated in a nice setting of smooth, quiet roads; the route stays within 3mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). Come April, we'll depart at 6:10 PM promptly. Now (and then) any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (Again, the ride is within 3 miles ... !) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride; Bill, e.g., has gills. Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL or Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.

March -- Thursdays

B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 5:45 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Again, with the March time change to DST (and the coming of the cherry blossoms in the Leesville Rd area!), we'll begin our season of evening riding. See the Tuesday listing for further information. Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL or Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.

March -- Fridays

CC * 35 * MD * 11 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 44° - 49°
Weekend Warmup. Seize the day and join our nice crew of regulars and irregulars on this casual true "CC" flatish ride with a few nice climbs for excitement. Lunch after ride if temps in the 60s. Hot chocolate stop possible mid-ride. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. Ride decision is dependent on temps and conditions so if cold but sunny and calm we might go - call cell after 9 am on day of ride. If marginal or in doubt CALL! Harold's cell for day of ride: 202/997-2376. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388.

There is usually a post ride lunch bunch, except on the 15 when we will have a tailgate. Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious. Tom Niedbala 703/799-4598.

CC * 44/34 * MD * 10 AM * Leonardtown MS
Piney Point Lighthouse Loop . Very gently rolling, scenic terrain and a rest stop at the lovely Piney Point Lighthouse. (Directions: Leonardtown MS is at intersection of MD-5 and MD-244, 2 miles south of Leonardtown (opposite the Fairgrounds). From MD-5 take right onto MD 244 at traffic light. March 2 Sunday

CC * 34/36/37 * VA * 10 AM * Loudoun Valley HS (PUR) * 35°/50%
Rustic Rides to Bluemont (paved/unpaved) . Some of the most scenic roads south and west of Purcellville are gravel, and this ride explores several of them. Three options will be offered for getting to North Fork, depending on your penchant for gravel hills. From North Fork we'll head for newly rebuilt Hibbs Bridge and then traverse several relatively flat gravel roads as we meander toward Bluemont to partake of the culinary offerings of the Bluemont General Store. From there it's back to Purcellville on a mix of paved and gravel. Amount of gravel will range from 9 to 16 miles, depending on route taken, so be sure to bring a bike suited to that terrain (e.g, cyclocross, touring with wider tires, ATB, etc). Ride cancelled if bad weather - all-paved alternative will go if weather OK but gravel roads icy or muddy. Norm Sandstrom [norm.sandstrom@gmail.com] H: 703/777-2158 or 540/454-8657.

Groups will stay together and NO ONE(!) will be left behind. Riders should come prepared to go non-stop. Route and length may vary from week to week depending on weather or road conditions. The ride will go if the temperature will be 30° or higher at the start. For questions about ride cancellations see PPTC forums day of. Any other questions contact ride leaders. The terrain is relatively flat, at least as flat as we can get in the Upper County portion of Montgomery. The distance will be between 40 and 50 miles, depending on the weather and temperature. Blue Ridger Backwards . There may be other rides out there, but they don't promise universal suffering for all riders. Too many riders are denied access to good hills. We'll be SO ready to say "yes we can" as we start the first big climb, while significantly reducing our future spending on porky snacks. Change can't be accomplished inside Washington, which is broken, so ignore the polls and pundits and become an audacious foot-soldier in the climbing revolution. There are 4400 feet to climb, but focus on miracles instead of math -- and help your ride leader celebrate his 45th! Disclaimer: both parties have penalized us for moving our ride ahead on the calender so the climbs won't count. Nevertheless, the ride is a go if it's over 25° with no snow or ice. If in doubt please contact the smoke-filled room to learn what the super delegates decided to do! Chris Ross [ross3ca<>verizon.net] 703/243-2042.

Birthday Blast . A terrific ride, taking in parts of two states, checking out the witches in Burkittsville and the snacks in Middletown before returning to Virginia. At this time ride leader intends to do the 55 but may opt for the longer, seeing what the day brings and how the legs feel. If the weather doesn't cooperate, the short version is available. I will have all cue options with me. Please contact me (phone only day of the ride) if you have any questions about the weather or temperature. Joan Oppel [oppel.js <> verizon.net] C: 703/328-1978.

B(H) * 46/50/57/61 * VA * 9:30 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Zap the Gap (Various Lengths) . A really fun route that goes through beautiful country with vineyards, farms, horses, and orchards. All that hard work at the beginning makes for a fantastic finish on 55, with more than a couple of long downhill spins. The ride is similar to the "Stormin' the Gap" ride (63) in Scott and Jim's Favorite Bike Rides (except the extensions, by Bill Strong, are more interesting). There are several variants to suit your distance goals or whims. Cue sheets (with directions to ride start) and some photos are posted on the PPTC Web at http://www.bikepptc.org/node/712 (longer versions and photos) and http://www.bikepptc.org/node/726 (shorter versions). We have some fallback routes of 29 and 38 miles if weather is not ideal.) No go in precipitation, ice on roads, or temperatures below 30. Ride will be rescheduled to the following day if canceled. Contact ride leaders on day of ride if in doubt. George Moore [geocmoore at aol.com] 703/304-4786 and Ken Widmaier [Widmaier at verizon.net] 703/346-2864.

Tour de Ag Preserve . With warm weather approaching, it's time to reacquaint yourself with the great riding Montgomery County's Agricultural Preserve has to offer. This ride offers a "grand tour" of the Preserve and its varied roads and terrain. The ride ends with a choice of tackling the climbs up Berryville and Black Rock Rd to really blow out that Winter rust, or a more sedate route back up Montevideo/Sugarland/ White Ground to Schaeffer if base miles are what you are after. Rest stop in Dickerson. No go in rain. Call if you have questions or weather/road conditions seem dubious. Eric Pilsk [epilsk@gmail.com] 240/893-3499.

Base Builder . This is the fourth of five March rides with a saddle time/early season fitness focus. This is a 100 mile route, but I will have a couple of options for cutting distance if weather is poor, or fitness/desire is deficient. We will start on time in light rain - but if we have a hard rain with improving forecast - we will ride a shorter loop at 12 Noon. I expect to ride a "BB" pace. Bring $$ and a lock as we may go for pizza after the ride. David Schneider [2tandem@comcast.net] 301/261-7979.

The ride, over flat to rolling countryside will provide an opportunity to watch the season change and have an enjoyable morning on your bike. I will lead the 30-mile route and have cue sheets of various lengths so those more ambitious may select a longer route. Hamilton Really Rustic . This ride explores many of the rustic, lesser-traveled roads of Loudoun that exist south of VA Rt 7. Nineteen of the 27 miles are on gravel, and total elevation gain is almost 2,500 feet, so bring your touring, crossover, ATB, or other bike with wide enough tires to do well on gravel roads. Only store (but no restroom) is at mile 9, and there are no other amenities along the route, except a port-a-john at the start. Ride a no-go if roads icy or excessively muddy. If ride is a no-go, leader will post in the Ride News section of the Forum on PPTC web site. The Hamilton Post Office is located at 53 West Colonial Highway, Hamilton, Virginia. Near Perfect Ride . It's Easter, but it's also Spring! If the weather is nice, we should ride. The roads around The Plains are gorgeous and ride guru, Dan Lehman, promises "ups'n'downs, but nothing of great note." (I'll actually check out the route before the ride so I know where the turns are.) And maybe, since it's Easter, the SUVs and pick-up trucks will be a little less threatening than usual. If weather is iffy, check with me. Len Burman [len DOT burman<>gmail DOT com] C: 703/216-5085.

In Search of Van Deventer Island . This scenic, almost all-flat ride is a combination of on-road and C & O Canal riding; so, a hybrid bicycle or at least a wide-tire machine would be preferable. Call ride leader if weather marginal. Willis Van Devanter [dutchman@aya.yale.edu] 301/972-7298.
