Then we cycle along the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sounds of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. RIDE START: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield, Virginia. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.) B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.
CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 44°

George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388.
CC/B/BB/A * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. This ride invites pace levels from "CC" on up and naturally splits into smaller groups; a cadre of regulars know the routes well and will help those faster and slower. Though ride leaders will make an effort to encourage group togetherness, there is no sweep because of varying route lengths. Note: ride leaders may change from week to week and/or chosen from the "regulars" in attendance. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50°. CC Brenda Ruby C: 301/602-4683, B Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600, BB Bill Hermatch [bhermz@yahoo.com], A Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600.

CC(MH) * 48 * VA * 9:35 AM * Collingwood Park * 40°/50%
Alexandria to Vienna . The last time I led a similar ride, I goofed, as the prior ride start (Belle Haven) has a distinct lack of parking on Saturdays. This time, I'm beginning the ride at Collingwood Park, where parking is on an established lot, but people can also park in nearby neighborhoods if the need arises. The ride begins south of Old Town and is one of the few club rides that start relatively close in, thus saving on the cost of gas! We will follow the Mt Vernon trail north through historic Alexandria, then upriver to Rosslyn where we will climb out of the Potomac River valley on the Custis Trail and then take the W&OD Trail to Vienna. I will stop at the venerable Vienna Inn for hot dogs, mahi tacos, or provisions. The ride turns around at that point, returning via the W&OD, Shirlington, Beverly Hills, and Old Town to the ride start. (Directions: I-495 / Beltway / Exit 177 / "U.S. Rt 1 N, Alexandria/Mount Vernon"; very QR on Jefferson St just past the Liberty gas station; 3 blocks to R on South Washington St, which becomes Mount Vernon Pkwy; 4.7 miles to Collingwood Rd exit; QR on West Blvd; 0.5 miles to Collingwood Park on L. To mapquest the start location, use "8200 W Boulevard Dr Alexandria, VA 22308-1713.") Ernie Hazera [oldtownwest@yahoo.com] 571/332-2571.
B * 62 * MD * 9 AM * Allen Pond Park (ALP)
North Beach Metric . Let's try again as we were rained out in March. Get a head start on the metric season with this relatively flat ride to the "new" coffee shop in North Beach. No go in rain. Kirk Walder [kirkwalder@comcast.net] 301/210-5914.
B(MH) * 40ish * MD * 7 AM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Laytonsville to Woodbine (and back) . Come on, get up early and ride! "B" back home Before the rest of your family has finished breakfast. Spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning riding through some of Montgomery and Howard counties. There will "B" one rest stop on the ride. And, this ride includes the opportunity to ride the hills of Hipsley Mill--beginning at about mile 28. Riders at all levels are welcome. "BB"/"A" riders, however, must wait until 7:10 AM to leave the parking lot so we will all get to the rest stop together. No go in rain or wet roads. If in doubt, call the day of the ride after 6 AM. Updates (if needed) will be posted to forum webpage no later than 6 AM on the day of the ride. Ride leader believes in leading from the rear and strongly endorses/supports NCLB... "No Cyclist Left Behind". In fact, the last 9 riders to finish with the ride leader will receive a special Clif Bar brownie--probably not as good as the brownies that have been distributed in the past (or so I've been told). Drew Malizio [amalizio_AT_verizon.net] 301/237-7435.
B/BB(H) * 56 * VA * 9 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Blue Ridger . Yes, that classic is back again this month, and hopefully every month, if we can. Still one of the better hill workouts this side of the river, but a fairly short drive away. Just when you think it's not such a hilly one after all, things take an upward turn after Bluemont. No Go if rain or more than 40% chance of rain. Call before 7:30 AM, if weather is doubious. Keith Blinn C: 703/201-3003 or H: 703/830-3174.

If this is your first W&W experience you are in for a wonderful surprise. The views are awesome across the valley and along the Potomac, the descents are thrilling, and the German Bakery is decadent. Gapland, Hoffmaster, Reno Monument and Marlu Ridge climbs. No go if raining at ride start or forecast >60%. For the long option we will ride by the Azaleas and over to the Japanese garden. On the return we will lunch at the historic Eastern Market. Ride Start is east side of the Park Service Regional Headquarters at the North end of Haines Point by the I-395 off ramp. Bring lock and lunch money. The Plains, Rock Hill Mill, and Rectortown Roads . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. Yet another beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. You will love the route. The descents are glorious, as are the unpainted roads and the pasture scenery. Rock Hill Mill and Hopewell Roads are my favorites. There are a few rollers and a couple of longer, gradual ascents (to breeze down you must pedal up.) Total ascent is about 1,900 feet over 36 miles or 53 feet per mile. No restroom facilities at TYL. Rest stops at 9 and 20 miles, but facilities not reliable until the 20-mile break. Questions? Please call ride leader at home NLT 2 hours prior to ride start or on cell phone thereafter. Northern Loudoun Rustic (paved/unpaved) . Come enjoy this rustic alternative to the more familiar paved loop known by various names such as Waterford Wanderer. We'll do a clockwise loop, passing through all the same towns of Hillsboro, Lovettsville, Taylorstown and Waterford, assiduously avoiding Hillsboro Rd / CO Rt 690 and Lovettsville Rd / CO Rt 672 except to cross them. Ten of the 38 miles are on gravel roads, so bring a bike with appropriate tires. Ride a no go if raining. Please call leader if in doubt about weather. Leader will also post a message in the Ride Forum on PPTC web site if ride a no go. Norm Sandstrom 703/777-2158 or 540/454-8657.

Marshall to Aaron Mountain . We'll head to Washington via Flint Hill, but instead of the usual out-and-back, we'll climb Aaron Mtn from the West. This includes a short, flat unpaved section (the mischievous part of Mariette's Mischief). After a stop at Laurel Mills, we return via Amissville which puts us in position to climb Carter's Run Rd back to Marshall. I've ridden it many times the easy way but want to see what it's like to finish a ride by climbing the, I'm told, 13 hills. No go in rain or on seriously wet roads. Call if in doubt. Fauquier Rustic #11 . The Great Cobbler Mountains Roundabout (paved/unpaved). According to Tom Roberson, who designed this ride and was kind enough to loan me the cue sheet, "About 10 miles of this route is unpaved on picturesque bucolic roads that are typical to Fauquier County, which roads the county is fierce in preserving. No long hills, but unrelenting short rises qualify the hilly rating . . . Recommend touring bikes, cyclocross and hybrid bikes. Mountain bikes are also appropriate, but since most of the ride is paved I recommend not using the typical heavy treaded mountain bike tires. I do recommend 700c x 28 - 32; 26 x 1.50, and 650b." There will be one rest stop in Orlean. No go in rain. Jim Houghton [houghtonjf@hotmail.com] 703/266-2209.

Ayrshire Farm Excursion . Ayrshire Farm is only open to the public twice a year, and it is a fascinating place to visit. The farm is a conservancy for rare breeds of livestock and is famous for the Ayrshire show horses that are bred there, as well as the collection of 18th/19th carriages of all types. The farm also has one of the largest organic produce operations in the region. The leader will spend at least one hour at the farm. Bathroom facilities cannot be counted on in the Plains. I suggest you allow enough time to continue on I-66 past The Plains to Marshall (3 miles). R after you exit I-66, and there is a McDonalds just ahead. Hill Cheater ride . A one way ride to Bethesda for lunch via Great Falls and Glen Echo at a "D" / slow "C" pace, mostly on residential streets. We lose altitude. The attitude will be that we'll more or less stay together, "D" ride style. Return to Shady Grove via Metro. Leader will provide instructions for bike on Metro; WMATA guidelines are at http://www.wmata.com/riding/bike/bikeonrails.cfm . Exit Shady Grove Metro by turning right at the turnstile, meet outside the NE tunnel exit. Margaret Chapman -- evenings -- 301/977-8988.

Mason Neck Meander . This is a leisurely ride through the Mason Neck area and surrounding neighborhoods, with only a few climbs. Strong "D" riders are welcome to join us. Lunch afterwards for those interested. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader the morning of the ride. Teresa Brooks (tacbrooks@cox.net) 703/971-3617 or cell: 703/728-7635.
CC(H) * 35/45 * MD * 10 AM * Glenwood MS (GLW)
Glenwood Gambol . A fine, scenic, Howard County jaunt that won't be too hilly but, after all, it is Howard county. No go in rain or wet roads. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515.

Express-Non, Middleburg-Yes, Old Tavern-Maybe . Sometimes I lead the Middleburg (More) Non-Express on holidays, but this time we will do it in the opposite direction. In this direction it is feasible and interesting to go through Old Tavern, the mysterious other town listed on the Plains/Old Tavern exit from I-66. The ride will cover generally nicely rolling roads with a few hills thrown in for good measure. We will go through The Plains (optional rest stop), and the longer routes will go to Marshall with the option to extend through Old Tavern on the way there. After a rest stop in Marshall, we will head to Middleburg, where there is a great bakery (may not be open on the holiday) for another rest stop. Then back to the start going over Hopewell Gap the long, gentle way. Possible post-ride lunch at Joe's in Gainesville afterwards. Alternatively, can picnic at the La Grange Winery (http://www.wineryatlagrange.com/), which is a little over five almost flat miles from the end of the ride. They don't sell food, but you can get something in Middleburg to bring with you. Helmets please. Cue sheets are available on the web at www.pankin.com. Call leader if weather is questionable. Mark Pankin [mp@pankin.com] 703/524-0937.
B/BB/A/AA * 62 * MD * 9 AM * Southern HS, Harwood (HAR)
Memorial Day Metric . This is the classic annual ride from Southern High School in Harwood that heads south through beautiful farm country and the rolling hills between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. It is not unusual to get 100 riders for this event so show up early and get a premier parking spot. Weather wise, we'll start on time in a drizzle or light rain - but if we have hard rain but an improving forecast - we will ride the same ride at 12 Noon. David Schneider [2tandem@comcast.net] 301/261-7979.
BB * 30ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet/icy roads. Longer ride options will be available on the holiday schedule. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Warren Farb [wfarb@comcast.net] 301/320-4942 Dereck Woodward [dereckw@comcast.net] .
BB/A * 57 * VA * 9 AM * The Plains (PLA)
Circumnavigating Warrenton . A reasonably gentle end to a long weekend. (Carter's Run Rd the easy way this time.) Mostly rolling hills with a little climbing at the end. No go in rain or on seriously wet roads. Call if in doubt. Jim Sherman [cryptic22000<>gmail.com] C: 571/232-0164.
Three Unions & A Windsor These rides explore the beautiful rolling farmland of Frederick & Carroll counties, visiting the small towns of Unionville, New Windsor, Uniontown, & Union Bridge (hence the title). There are rest stops in New Windsor & Union Bridge. For each of the "C/CC/B" rides there are a couple route choices which share many roads. We might have some picnic afterwards as a nice option -- share some food, further conversations & acquaintances (in the sun, we'll hope). Although there is a pretty full slate of local recreation at the nearby park, there might yet be room for us to use (some of?) the shelter's tables and grills -- something we'll investigate. (Directions: Pick your preference--some like longer & straighter, via Frederick; Dan prefers over the fields and through the woods ..., on Rt 75 / Green Valley Rd, Libertytown Park is located 0.25 mi east of the junction of Rts 75 / Green Valley Rd & 26 / Liberty Rd. Some MD members should look for routes through Mt Airy onto Old Annapolis Rd; others & Virginians can go north on I-270 to exit #22 for "Barnesville, Hyattstown"; turn L onto Rt 109 to the light (T), L again onto 355 north for about 0.5mi, then bR onto Rt 75 / Green Valley Rd and follow it north to Libertytown (there is a slight jog L-R at a light w/80, and just south of the I-70 overpass at New Market, a L t-r-o Rt 75, well signed). In Libertytown (Rt 75 named "Walnut St"), cross Rt 26 / Main St at the light and then turn quick left (North St) & right into church lot. There are bathrooms at the park, 0.3 distant. The longer, less scenic, not-my-way but the highway route is: From the south, take I-270 to US 15 North to a right onto Rt 26 towards Walkersville. Follow Rt 26 into Libertytown to THE light; turn left onto Rt 75 / Walnut St at the light, and make a quick left-right at the first street (North) into the church lot. The park address is 12201 Liberty Rd, Libertytown 21762, which via MapQuest etc. can give you a look of the lay of the town; the park is 0.3 from the church.)

Three Unions & A Windsor . Here's one our favorite rides, both for the rolling farm lands, and the mixing with riders of other classes. This one is a real treat: quaint towns, beautiful countryside, a little climbing. Joan plans to do the longer ride but will bring all the cue sheets. Any updates will be posted to the Pedalers Google group and the Forums section of the PPTC website. E-mail or call the leader up until 9 pm the day before the ride with any questions. Joan's phone # is for the morning of the ride. Joan Oppel [oppel.js <> verizon.net] C: 703/328-1978 and John Hutchinson [hutchjm<>us.ibm.com] H: 301/926-8767 or 240/997-5820.

Three Unions & A Windsor . Join me on one of my favorite rides. Beautiful country roads, historic old towns, lovely scenery, generally low traffic. The temperature and the group will determine the ride length. As Libertytown Park, our launch point, is hosting games all day, we'll park at a nearby church and roll to the park for 0.0 setting & potty use. Libertytown is a little north and east of Frederick. No go in rain. If in doubt about the weather, call the ride leader the morning of the ride. Denise Cohen [bikergal101<>yahoo dot com] 301/233-7535.
BB/A(MH) * 60-70ish * MD * 9:30 AM * St. Peter's Catholic Church, Libertytown
Three Unions & A Windsor . I missed this ride in '007, so it'll be good to reacquaint myself with the region that held so many enticing roads that I had to cue rides for many classes, to use more of them! We'll be before, behind, and otherwise around our fellow club riders of other paces. Conceivably, "BB" & "A" groups will use slightly separate cues. Whether re weather? Heck, if it's pouring, I'll ask Hugo to sub.; for dubious conditions, check the local e-waves or call. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.

Wayson's to North Beach . This is a modification of a David Schneider PPTC ride in southern Maryland. Departing from a rural park and ride adjacent to MD4, it winds its way, mostly on lovely, small roads, out to and back from a lunch stop at North Beach (mile 21). There are no long climbs, but the route is rolling with several short, steep sections. Overal, there is a total of 2500 ft of climbing. No go in rain. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. E-mail ride leader for the meaning of God or other answers to great riddles. John Wannen [john@wannen.com ] C: 202/374-1523.

Weather wise, we'll start on time in a drizzle or light rain - but if we have hard rain but an improving forecast - we will ride a shorter loop at 12 Noon - so call. I expect to ride a "BB" pace.
