Weekend Warmup. Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60s. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49°. Circle of Cycles, 23rd Edition. To borrow from Joni Mitchell, "The cyclists go round and round; the cyclists' legs go up'n'down" --and that's about the size of it (begin with the basics), along with the mixing of riders throughout the day (though it takes an earlybird or late hanger-arounder to catch sight of the DC Randonneurs). Bring a little repast to consume at the mile 3.2 (every 3.2 miles) pit stop and add to the festive spirit; we've not yet had a grill there, but this could be the year! So, show up when you feel like (what did you DO last night?), show off your Christmas goodies, and all of what manner of manual mechanical movements make our club go 'round. (We expect guests from VMP and perhaps elsewhere during the day.)

Hooray its January 1st!. Please see my "A" ride description for the full text version but suffice it to say that this year we'll coordinate our efforts with our fixee brothers and sisters from the "B"s and "A"s for a trip through Rock Creek Park with a gentle tour of the empty DC streets, a couple of spins around Hains Point and a nice easy ride back up to the VMP. Ride leader promises to show if it's cold and windy but otherwise rideable; however, you're on your own if it's icy, snowing, raining or otherwise too funky to ride in ~ and single digit temps qualify as ever soooo slightly too funky for me baby! This is a call to the FixeeNation and all Team Shiftless members, bring it ya'll.

Hooray its January 1st!. Happy New Year! Uh oh, that must mean that it's time for the annual New Year's day fixee ride... Again..?! Already?? Wow, where did the year go? Well hello 2007 - show us some love, cause ready or not here we come. Yes fixee fans it's time once again to give the ol legs a mild shakedown and brave the winter weather. This year we'll coordinate our efforts with our fixee brothers and sisters from the "B"s (and "BB"s too if they feel like it), heck we're not proud, we don't care what category you ride with. Come join us for a trip through Rock Creek Park with a gentle tour of the empty DC streets, a couple of spins around Hains Point and a nice easy ride back up to the VMP. We'll probably stop somewhere for something hot to drink and try to stay warm in a nice close group of friends. Ride leader promises to show if it's cold and windy but otherwise rideable; however, you're on your own if it's icy, snowing, raining or otherwise too funky to ride in - and single digit temps qualify as ever soooo slightly too funky for me baby! And yes, we're glad you asked, we have a strong affinity for fixee's but we won't spurn you if you show up on a multi-speed bike, just show a little respect for those of us who can't coast or shift and lets all have a good time. This is a call to the FixeeNation and all Team Shiftless members, bring it ya'll.

Charles Cushman Memorial Ride. This is a nice winter training ride, with some good hills, and it is remarkably traffic-free. There is one rest stop. Ride leader will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will basically be "leaderless" groups that will form according to pace and distance. There is usually a post ride lunch bunch. Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious.

Jets and Sharks Dirty Melee. As a biker who does most of my miles on road, but only races MT bikes, I feel that a dirt road ride is a good opportunity to have our two DC area bike gangs the Jets(PPTC) and the Sharks(MORE) do a joint ride. I will be on a cyclocross bike leading the "A"s and Ken from MORE will be leading on a FAT tire mtn bike leading the "B"/"CC"s. The "A"s will be doing the 34-mile route with around 2600ft elevation. There will also be a 30-mile 2000ft. Also is a shortcut after the rest stop to make it only 20 miles. So, come on out with your cross bike, rough tourer, or your MT bike, but please leave your switchblades and dancing shoes at home. The 30-mile route is on Routeslip http://routeslip.com/map.php?map=10939. And, we will be hitting Tuscarora Mill afterwards. Call the ride leader if the weather is dubious.

Highland's Horsey Hills. It worked last month so we'll do it again ...twice in January. Nice ride on low traffic, somewhat hilly, Howard County roads. Figure on the 38 for most but i'll have a longer and a shorter cue sheet. The temperature guide above is just that ... if colder but sunny the ride may go ... call if any doubt. BUT if it is too cold for the road ride we'll bring our mountain bikes and dog for a 1 1/2 hour spin on the nice trails in the park so bring MT bikes and dogs. Or, if snow prevents riding call about X-country skiing in the park!! After ride all are invited to ride leaders place a mile away for hot chocolate and hot tub (bring appropriate wear for tub and carrots for the horses). (Directions: follow directions to SES but continue East on Rt 108 about 5 miles to Hall Shop Rd (about 0.5 mile AFTER crossing Patuxent River). Join a go-lucky group of fast riders as we do the whistle-stop tour from Nick Persampieri's old stomping grounds. Then we'll have a faster return to DC via Rock Creek Park and its sheltering trees - or its wind-tunnel effect, depending on the weather. This ride will go if it's sunny and cold (within some reason) - the only deterrent will be snow, ice, or pouring rain (feel free to email or call the ride leader if the weather prognosticators' Magic 8 Balls come up with "questionable" as the answer). Ride starts and ends at Gandhi Statue at the intersection of Mass Ave, 21st St, and Q St NW, just one block west of the Dupont Circle North Metro exit.

Winter Training Loops. This is a repeat of the rides we did last month. I will bring cues for all three distances, to allow us to choose based on the weather. The shortest one has no rest stop, appropriate if it is cold. The middle loop goes to Deale, and the longest one to North Beach (with a rest stop in Rose Haven). The worst part of Queen Anne Bridge Rd, along with Patuxent River Rd and Franklin-Gibson Rd have been recently paved, so the whole ride is on smooth pavement, and there is no chip seal. Although Luigi's has closed, it was replaced with an Armand's, which has a $7 all-you-can-eat pizza and salad lunch buffet, so there is no need to starve after the ride. Please call or check the PPTC list server (hopefully working) if the weather is questionable. Depending on the amount of sunshine, if it looks like it will be less than 22-24° at the ride start time, I will probably not want to ride, but may consider delaying the ride start to noon if it looks like there will be enough of a warm-up to make that worthwhile. Please call or check the list server if it is really cold.

The Plains & 245 to Zulla & Hopewell Rds. MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a shorter and different route but still a beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. There is one long, gradual hill and a few rolling ones, but nothing a "C" rider can't handle with ease. We ride through the Plains (rest stops at 9 and 20 miles) but also be prepared for no stop because the merchants in The Plains are only sometimes understanding. You will love the side route and Hopewell Rd! If weather is doubtful, call ride leader the morning of the ride.
