CC * 35 * MD * 10:30 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD) * 49°
Weekend Warmup. Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly flat ride with a few climbs to warm us up. And please plan on lunch with us after the ride if temps go into the 60s. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. We will ride if high for the day is forecast above 49°. If colder but sunny and calm please call cell after 8:30 AM on day of ride. Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or C: 202/997-2376 and

Regular Weekend Rides

March 3 Saturday

ALL * 38/34/27 * VA * 10:15 AM * Belle Haven Picnic Area (BEL) * 40°/30%
Charles Cushman Memorial Ride. This is a nice winter training ride, with some good hills, and it is remarkably traffic-free. There is one rest stop. Ride leader will have the sign up sheet, cue sheets and be there to get everyone started. Then it will basically be "leaderless" groups that will form according to pace and distance. There is usually a post ride lunch bunch. ( NOTE: We will have a tailgate after the last ride on March 17. See that listing for details). Park in the north lot (second one) Call the leader if you have questions or weather/road conditions dubious.
Tom Niedbala 703/799-4598

C(H) * 23 * MD * 10:45 AM * Cloverly Safeway (CLO)
Lunch at El Azteca. We'll do a "C" pace cruise up New Hampshire Ave to Ednor Rd, then head into Howard County to El Azteca in Clarksville for lunch. The return trip will follow a different route. The ride route includes two climbs out of the Patuxent River valley and a hilly stretch on Trotter Road in Howard County, hence the "(H)" designation. Bring helmet, ID, lock, and lunch money. No go if wet/icy roads, call ride leader between 8:30 AM and 9 AM on the morning of the ride if the weather is marginal. Joint ride with BBC and OHBTC. Cue sheet available online at http://www.qis.net/~cmoriarity .
Chris Moriarity -- before 8 PM -- 301/270-3416

CC * 37 * MD * 10:45 AM * Accokeek Fire House
Tour d'Accokeek Extended. An extended version of the Tour d'Accokeek, with stops at T&J's BBQ, Pisgah Fire Station and Marshall Hall. Optional extra loop to the Colonial Farm after the ride. Joint ride with Oxon Hill. Route is map no. 19836 in routeslip.com. (Directions: Take MD 210 south approximately 10 mi from the beltway. Go right on Livingston Rd at the Accokeek Rd / Rt 373 light / B&J Carryout. The fire station is on right after about 3/4 mi. http://tinyurl.com/2l3hdg links to a map to the Fire Station.)

B * 40ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Poolesville HS (POO) * 35°
The Ides of March -- Early. A scenic ride on the back roads of Poolesville. Since it is early in the season we will take a ride with few hills designed by Bob Bloomfield. Maybe he'll join us? Park in the corner away from the school. Helmets please. No go in rain or wet or icy roads.
Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] 301/367-2430

B * 43/52 * VA * 10 AM * Marshall P&R (MAR)
Horse Country. Come out and enjoy the beautiful Virginia countryside. This is the best of the best. Use the phone the morning of the ride if the weather is questionable.
Melinda Simons [melindasimons at yahoo.com] 703/892-4928

BB * 42-66 * VA * 9:30 AM * Tyler ES, Gainesville (TYL)
Tyler to Casanova, Take II. Thanks to Craig for taking Feb's rendition of this ride, which means I still need that base mileage! I first wrote this description in a winter heat wave, but now the bottom has fallen out of the thermometer while the anemometer's in high cadence! We'll hope that March's roar of the lion is less prominent, and much warmer. But the short route is available just in case. If it's brutally cold or otherwise dubious, check with the ride leader.
Kelly Smith [bike_kelly <> yahoo.com] 703/548-0424

BB/A * 50 * MD * 10 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
Spring Training Ride/Base Mile Builder. A moderately paced ride to get in shape for ensuing spring rides. Not overly hilly but given the area, there will be some climbing. 50 miles if the weather is "warm." We can go shorter if it is cold. Up to Sugarloaf and back. No go if temperature is below 15° at ride start time or if the roads are wet or icy.
Tim Guilford [Tim@k-b-s.com] 301/926-0082

(Directions from the Capital beltway: Take the Dulles Toll Rd / Rt 267 west to exit 9-B / Rt 28 north. After the second traffic light, exit to the left at Waxpool Rd / Rt 625 west toward Ashburn. CC * 25/31 * MD * 10:30 AM * South Germantown Rec Park (SGR) * 40°/50%
Friday Ride (on Sunday). Sorry, this doesn't mean you get to start your weekend over. Fans of the traditional Spring/Summer Friday Ride will know this is a short and sweet loop around Poolesville with a few extra miles. Don't worry if this is one of your first rides of the season because I have 15, 18 and 21 mile cues available. No go in rain, wet roads, high winds, or temps below 40° at ride start. Panera for lunch afterwards is a good possibility if folks are interested.
Brenda Ruby [pptc_cc_riders@yahoo.com] C: 301/602-4683

The Secretary of Energy will report the impact of this change to Congress. Congress retains the right to resume the 2005 Daylight Saving Time schedule once the Department of Energy study is complete.

Winter Training Loops. This is a repeat of the rides we did last month. I will bring cues for all three distances, to allow us to choose based on the weather. The shortest one has no rest stop, appropriate if it is cold. The middle loop goes to Deale, and the longest one to North Beach (with a rest stop in Rose Haven). The worst part of Queen Anne Bridge Rd, along with Patuxent River Rd and Franklin-Gibson Rd have been recently paved, so the whole ride is on smooth pavement, and there is no chip seal. Although Luigi's has closed, it was replaced with an Armand's, which has a $7 all-you-can-eat pizza and salad lunch buffet, so there is no need to starve after the ride. Please call or check the PPTC list server (hopefully working) if the weather is questionable.

Lovely Legs in Laytonsville. Yes, you can make your legs lovely and strong, building long bellied, sinewy quads, hamstrings, calves, by riding the hills of Laytonsville at an early spring aerobic tempo pace while at the same time enjoying catching up with hibernation horror stories such as excess eating, lack of riding, # of new lbs acquired in the month of February alone, all the while munching on your favorite 7-Eleven snack at the rest stop. Up to Lisbon.

The (Almost End of) Winter Naked Mountain Winery Picnic Ride. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Come celebrate St. Patrick's Day by cycling a shorter version of our Naked Mt. Winery route followed by an indoor/could be outdoor picnic (bring your own and to share) at the Winery. All ride levels are welcome. The ride starts at Naked Mt. Winery in Markham, VA (address, and link to the winery web site with excellent directions, below). Please NOTE: We cannot bring any alcohol or beer onto the grounds of the winery. IF the ride is snowed-out (I'm covering all bases), a hearty group of us plan to tackle the elements by going just to the winery at 2:30 PM without our bikes bringing sundry friends who may not be cyclists - but the plan is to bike to earn our repast. Check with the ride leaders if the weather is questionable and we will post to the topica by 9 AM the morning of the ride. The Beast. Team Shiftless, the Pedaler's eclectic group of fixed gear fanatics, is hosting a relatively-flat, fixed-gear friendly ride though Anne Arundel County. The Beast refers not our route, but to first-cut corned beef and cabbage as it is exquisitely prepared by the Killarney House Restaurant, and this is a St. Patrick's Day ride after all. We have several options available for today and will pick a distance that closely matches the temperature at ride start. Ken, Jim, and I ride about a 70-inch gear which is good for an average speed of 17-18 MPH. Riders with geared, carbon fiber bikes are welcome -- just expect to be ridiculed and asked to ride at the rear of the peleton. The Killarney House has a great selection of traditional Irish food and drink, so bring $15-20 and join us for a great lunch afterward. Green Machines To The Not-So Green Hills. Don your green jerseys, sport your green helmets, throw a leg over your green bike, or fill your water bottle with green sports drink to create a green line of cyclists as we head to Poolesville and back. Please keep the Nat'l Park Service happy by parking in the section of the lot furthest from MacArthur Blvd. No go if torrential rain, snow, or lots of ice - otherwise, we roll.

Highland's Horsey Hills. Nice ride on low traffic, somewhat hilly, Howard County roads. Most ride 38 mi in winter. Or, if snow prevents riding call about X-country skiing in the park!! After ride all are invited for nearby hot chocolate and hot tub (bring appropriate wear for tub and carrots for the horses). (Directions: follow directions to SES but continue East on Rt 108 about 5 miles to Hall Shop Rd (about 0.5 mile AFTER crossing Patuxent River). Turn right and in .3 mile turn right into park (address is 12975 Hall Shop Rd - see http://www.co.ho.md.us/RAP/RAP_HoCoParksSchooleyMill.htm) then immediately right to first parking area. ...or take either I-95 or Rt 29 north to Rt 216 west to a left on Hall Shop to a left into Park. Chrysalis Rustic Rendezvous. This ride is about 50% unpaved, and hilly. ATB, cyclocross, hybrids, and touring bikes will do. I plan to ride a road bike with 700c/28 tires and just take it easy on the rough stuff. If you want to be more prudent, then I recommend 26/1.50, 700c/32 , and I'll buy a glass of wine for anyone who shows up with 650b wheels that are really cool. I'll lead if it is cold, but not in cold winds with bad wind chill. No go with any precipitation on the road. Afterwards, enjoy the warmth of the winery and taste some of Virginia's finest. Bring some food to go with that wine because last time I was there they didn't have a lunch menu. Directions: Rt 50 west towards Middleburg; after Gilbert's Corner / Rt 50 / Rt 15 intersection, just past Aldie, L on Champe Ford Rd; winery in about one mile on left, clearly marked.)

The Ides of March -- Late. Developed by Bob Bloomfield, this is a delightful fairly flat classic around Poolesville passing by the foot of Sugar Loaf. The ride provides several shortcut possibilities at different stages, so we can cut it short in case the weather does not cooperate. No go on wet or icy roads.

The Plains, Rock Hill Mill, and Rectortown Rds. MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. Yet another beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. You will love the unpainted country roads. Rest stops at 9, 19, and 25 miles. The proprietors in The Plains (9 and 25 miles) have stated "no road-biking shoes, socks, or bare feet" due to scratching the floor and health code. MTB shoes are okay. There are a few rollers and a couple of longer, gradual ascents. Total ascent is about 1,480 feet over 36 miles. There are obviously equal descents, and the long downhills are glorious! If weather is doubtful, call ride leader the morning of the ride.

Local Trails Ride. This ride will go at a genuine "C" pace when trail traffic permits. The route will depend on trail conditions at ride time. We will take the C&O canal trail up to Great Falls for a picnic if the trail is dry (road bikes not recommended). If the canal trail is gooey, we will take the Crescent-Rock Creek loop with a picnic on the way back. If there is a nuclear bomb threat and the city has emptied out, we will take the Mt. Highland's Horsey Hills. Nice ride on low traffic, somewhat hilly, Howard County roads. Most ride 38 mi in winter. The temperature guide above is just that ... if colder but sunny the ride may go ... call if any doubt. Or, if snow prevents riding call about X-country skiing in the park!! After ride all are invited for nearby hot chocolate and hot tub (bring appropriate wear for tub and carrots for the horses). Ada's Flint Hill Fling (II?). We'll do something that complements our CC colleagues-on-wheels down to the friendly Settles Chevron in Flint Hill, and make our way back to Marshall amid the small mountains all around; Joan-O might need a push. Tentatively, expect at least one short (0.3) dirt section, which should be avoidable, though at the loss of seeing The Stone Wall Built By Giants (tm). The "Hey, Mr. DJ" Ride. That's the song you'll be humming on this somewhat hilly ride on the upper Montgomery County/lower Frederick County roads. I've been working on this route throughout the winter; I think you'll enjoy some of the "new roads" that are seldom thought about and off the PP radar screen. Don't let the low mileage concern you. There are some pretty good climbs on this route that will keep the ride interesting and challenging. If the temperatures are low, we'll skip the rest stop and keep moving to stay warm. If, by chance, a 60°+ day is predicted, I'll have a longer cue sheet with an extra 10 miles and a rest stop prepared. Minimum temperature 45° at ride start. Call if in doubt.
