D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington . Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet at 11 am in front of Best Buns (4010 South 28th Street, Arlington, VA 22206) to select a restaurant, then go to lunch at about 12:45 pm. See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 11 AM 12:45 pm you are welcome to join the Leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at the Italian Store in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow C pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining: lunch is at 11 AM; ride is no go.] Ron Trueworthy [Ron_Trueworthy@Yahoo.com].

July -- Mondays

B(H) * 20 * VA * 6 PM * Barcroft ES
Heavenly Hills of Arlington (reduction) . This is a shortened version of a longer 35 mile ride that cuts off most of the flat part in the front and gets you right into the hills! We will start from the Barcroft ES located at Wakefield Street and 6th and 8th Streets off George Mason Drive in the Barcroft Area of Arlington. Due to hills, traffic, and major route crossings (but mostly the hills), ride leader will lead at a slow B pace, but all B-like riders are welcome. The point of the ride is to get in some hills but also have fun and be safe simultaneously. Ride starts in Arlington and travels to McLean and back to Arlington where we gently segue to a couple of flat and downhill "mercy miles" at the end to help loosen the legs...ahhh, heavenly! Cynthia Priddy, diamrem@aol.com, 703/501-8525.

BB * 30ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet roads. Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead "A" ride below. Ride leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the "A" riders. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). B/A/AA * 20-30 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park

Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark. A/AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). (E.g., a 6:30 departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.

B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113 and Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.

B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a B pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.

BB (MH) * 26 * VA * 6 PM * Lyon Village Shopping Ctr, Arlington
Graceful Hill Route . A new after work ride offering an alternative set of hills through Arlington and McLean. The route was artfully designed by club member Grace Williams and offers endless climbs. For those interested in interval training --this is it! We climb, let up, climb, let up ... The ride is not tailored for continuous speed but for short bursts of energy, which builds strength and overall climbing speed. Some flat sections, but mostly up and down, and all scenic. Ride start is very close to Rosslyn. (Directions: From the Martha Custis bike trail, exit to the Giant/Big Wheel Bike shop/Italian Store shopping plaza. By car: corner of Lee Hwy and Spout Run Pkwy/other side is Kirkwood Rd. Meet at the east end of the plaza parking lot near the Giant.) If raining or rain likely, e-mail or call ride leaders. Colleen McNerney 703/408-2741 and Pam Willenz [willenzp@positek.net] 703/403-7026.

July -- Fridays

CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with two climbs to keep us honest. And plan on lunch after the ride at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.

B/CC * 18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! A slightly earlier start to encourage a social pace...all the better for llamma and cow gazing. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. Don't shy away if you can't make the "official" start time; come later and cut the ride short (cue sheet always on ride leader's car), meeting us in the parking lot by dusk to talk about where dinner will be. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd.; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather, on wet roads, or temps below 50. There is no sweep because of varying route lengths, but ride leader will make an effort to encourage group togetherness. CC: Brenda Ruby [pptc_cc_riders@yahoo.com] C: 301/602-4683 , B: Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600.

A/BB * 25 * MD * 6:30 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:30 Rural Rumble! Same ride as above with a later start to accommodate (encourage?) the speed demons among you. You know who you are so come and be in your element. A: Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600, BB: Bill Hermz [bhermz@yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.

A Double Shot of Brandy Station . This is a relatively new ride that extends the distance and the fun into the scenic, rolling farmland north of Remington which we seldom see. B/BB * 55 * MD * 7 AM * Sherwood ES (SES)
Early Birds . Early riders get it all! Less heat from both the sun and those non-bikers in your life. We'll put together 55 good miles and still get you home in time for whatever non-biking demands might have been scheduled for you. There will be plenty of shortcuts for those who need to hurry home. Only flood conditions will stop the ride, and we'll try to get up early enough to have some coffee at the start to help you get going. Eric Pilsk [epilsk@gmail.com] C: 240/893-3499 Nancy Kotarski [nancykotarski@comcast.net] SND/EEE-MAIL.

B/BB/A(H) * 50-88 * VA * 9 AM * Columbia Furnace (CFR) * 40%
Lost River Classic -- WOW . Way Out West (WOW) you'll find mountains, forests, babbling brooks, wildlife, (85%) sparsely traveled roads, historic "furnaces", quiet, and climbs. It's worth the extra drive, now and then. This ride starts on the western edge of the northern Shenandoah Valley, climbs over the ridge at Wolf Gap into WV, and then explores several valleys (and the ridges in between) in the George Washington National Forest and Lost River (WV) State Park. The shorter routes are out-and-back and 100% low traffic, so you can just turn around when you've had enough. The full route turns south into VA, comes back into the Shenandoah Valley with the waters of the Shenandoah's North Fork, and then skirts the west edge of the valley to return via the resort town of Orkney Springs. Total climb is 8500 feet. The cues (with pictures and notes on rest stops, elevation profile and ft/mi) are posted in the Cue Sheet Library. Riders will form groups and ride at their own pace. Ride leaders will wait at return for riders who request this before the ride, and go to help them if they return late. No go in rain, Heat Index much over 100, or air index for above code orange. Helmets required and several water bottles recommended. Contact ride leaders on day of event if in doubt. George Moore [geocmoore at aol.com] 703/304-4786 and Ken Widmaier [widmaier at verizon.net] 703/608-2849.

No cue sheet is necessary as this ride is flat and straight. (Directions to the trail head: take exit 12, Rt 56, from I-70. Turn east, past a convenience store (with food and bathrooms) to the parking lot on the left. The start point is approximately 1/2 hour past Hagerstown, MD so plan on a 1-1/2 to 2 hr trip from the Washington DC metro area.) I will not ride in the rain. Alison Andrews 301/208-0515.

The Wolf & the Turkeys . These routes explore seldom ridden roads of Rappahannock Co., which run amid the foothills of the Blue Ridge, and in a gorgeous pair of hollows roll over the side of it. The longer route follows the 56-mile Villes, Hills, & Mills route to Washington, but there turns westwards to rise up Harris Hollow beside the Rush River. The shorter one skips Ben Venue & Flint Hill for rolls up over Aaron Mountain and into Washington from the south. After Washington, they are the same, and will later follow the 56mi route into Sperryville and beyond. There are two dirt/gravel sections (of 0.4 & 0.5mi, resp.) just after the summit into Gid Brown Hollow; many road bikes have passed over these by now. On the shorter route, there is one 0.7mi flat dirt section by the Thornton River. No go in rain, Heat Index much over 100, or air index for above code orange. Contact ride leaders on day of event if in doubt. George Moore [geocmoore<>aol.com] 703/304-4786 and Ken Widmaier [widmaier<>verizon.net] 703/608-2849.

B * 60ish * MD * 7:30 AM * Southern HS (HAR)
Ragbrai Training Ride . An honestly paced ride thru the moderate to gently rolling Anne Arundel County countryside. This is sort of an annual romp. Even though I can't make RAGBRAI this year, we all still need to keep in training. Quite fixed gear friendly. Starting early to hopefully avoid the worst of the heat of the day. Ken Sanford [kanford at comcast.net] -- before 9 PM -- 301/942-5208.

B(MH) * 56 * VA * 8:15 AM * Amissville Commuter Lot
Rappahannock's Villes, Hills, & Mills . We join "CC" & "BB" riders, with a couple options for all. This route rolls out to a familiar passage through Ben Venue and Flint Hill (run in the opposite direction on Blue Ridge Views), and then turns southwest to Washington, en route Sperryville, with a spectacular panoramic view of the mountains. (The route's entirely paved.) If the weather's dubious, check with leader. Neal Molloy [Neal.Molloy<>comcast.net] 703/304-8351.

BB (MH) * 69 * VA * 8 AM * Amissville Commuter Lot
Old Rag Views . With the lack of BB rides on the schedule in VA lately, I have decided to step up and offer a few options this month, this being the first one. Wet conditions at the onset may be cause for cancellation of this ride, call if doubtful. (For those with extra ambition & energy, Dan might have designs for extending this ride into Sperryville and thus sweeping up "CC" & "B" riders, with whom we share our start.) Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727-0321.

A(H) * 68 * MD * 8:30 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
OMG - WTF . Although none of us are in the Tour we can attempt to simulate what it is like to climb all day. Come on out and enjoy four of the more notorious climbs in the region (Hamburg, Harp Hill, Middlepoint and finish it off with Coxey Brown). There will be some rolling hills in between the climbs and two rest stops to get us ready for the next hill. I am aiming for an early start to hopefully get us off the roads before the heat becomes oppressive. No go in rain. Kevin Smith [ksmith9296@aol.com] 301/977-8535.

Sunday Treat . Just a short ride to get outside early in the morning. We'll go out the Capital Crescent Trail after crossing the bridge for espresso and other treats on Bethesda Avenue, share stories, lament our chores unfinished and return before it gets too hot. Now of my three score years, not ten, Twenty will not come again. And take from fifty springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. Don't you just love the passing of time on two wheels. Bikers love to say four wheels moves your body but two wheels moves your soul. John Wannen, john@wannen.com C 202/441-5625.

CC * 41/61 * VA * 8:30 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
The Loudoun Round Up Ride and Hunters Head Tavern Lunch Ride . All ride levels are welcome. This is a great ride in the horse countryside and afterwards we'll drive 10 miles west to the Hunters Head Tavern in Upperville for a late lunch on their outdoor patio. If possible, RSVP to me before the ride if you plan to come to the Tavern so I can make a somewhat accurate reservation for an outdoor table (where we sat outside last January!). This route does include the stretch of Snickersville Turnpike where Hibbs Bridge is under repair. However, as of publication date, cyclists can walk over the bridge. If something changes the week of our ride, I'll bring a different cue sheet with comparable miles. Ride leader will likely do the 41-mile option but could be up for 61. No go in steady rain at ride start or a high probability of bad thunderstorms before we'd finish. Check the website forum or call ride leader morning of the ride if weather is questionable. Brin Luther [brinluther at comcast.net] C: 202/413-6548.

Another "AA" Ride--Calvert . Challenge yourself to a scenic, shady, and hilly ride in AA (Anne Arundel) County with a small intrusion into Calvert County for a rest stop. Some quick hills and a great view of the Chesapeake . Morgan Roberts [CARMTR3086@Comcast.net] 410/798-5187.

If precipitation is possible call us. Note that the ride start time is TBA - To Be Assigned ... The ride start time will depend on weather conditions and be decided 3 days before the ride. We will post the time on the PPTC website ride forum, send it to the google group and email it to anyone who asks. If you are not online just call. This is an attempt to see if we can make scheduling a bit more flexible and interactive. Cell for day of ride: 202/997-2376. Janet Young and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388.

B * 36 * MD * 8 AM * Colonnades at Kentlands
Kentlands Kaper . We will ride on Quince Orchard Rd., Route 28 and Seneca Rd. for a short stretch; a relatively short ride with an early start time so we can get home by noon. I recommend helmet or bike mounted mirrors. Riders can use the bathroom of Gaithersburg Dental Care to change. Directions: From I-270 take I-370 / Sam Eig Hwy west to a right turn (north) onto Great Seneca Hwy and proceed 2-3 miles. Turn left at Quince Orchard Rd. Make the first left (at Exxon station) which is Booth St. Another quick left at Arch Pl and proceed 2 blocks to the parking lot. Up West! Saturday was a day of hills on both sides of the Potomac (one of many this July!), and some longer commutes, so today we'll shorten the commute and moderate the terrain, and maybe even the pace, to recover. (This is a fine ride for B riders to do at their own pace--and, of course, the usual BBs, who have led this ride often.) Check with the leader if the weather's dubious. We then double back and after an energizing climb, we return on neighborhood streets and a secluded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sound of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Dr, Springfield. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.) We will use caution at high volume, high speed road traffic crossings on the Fairfax County Parkway Bike Trail. Also, the bike trail along the Fairfax County Parkway is a little hillier than the W&OD trail. Stop for a snack or light lunch and conversation at the fabulous new Whole Foods Market in Fairfax. Those who want to get in more miles can start in Vienna. Wear a helmet and bring water. New and prospective club members are welcome and encouraged to participate. Birthday Bash for Dave . This ride will help celebrate a big birthday for Dave Byrnes. If you don t know Dave, trust me it is worth helping him celebrate anyway and learning from his example what it means to stay in shape. This ride is mostly flat with just a few rolling hills. There are two rest stops to allow for regrouping and refreshment. A birthday picnic is planned afterwards, so please bring a covered dish to share. Ride leader (and friends of Dave) will supply hamburger and hotdogs. Please call ride leader the morning of the ride if the weather looks questionable. C/D * 26 * MD * 10:30 AM * White's Ferry (WIF)
Whites Ford Splash & Ride . This ride has a unique feature: an optional river crossing on foot. Bring your sports sandals if you would like to cross the Potomac at White's Ford (3 miles upstream from the ferry), which was an important river crossing during the Civil War, in particular before the battle of Antietam and on this very day in 1864, after Jubal Early's "raid on Washington." The river is only about knee-deep at the ford, and should be a nice way to cool off on a hot July day. The bike ride itself is on the towpath to Point of Rocks and back, shaded the whole way. Hybrid or ATB tires are best, but the path is in pretty good condition and can probably be managed on a touring bike. Point of Rocks will be a good place for lunch, but you may want to bring a sandwich, because the country store in town does not offer much variety beyond sodas and snacks. Mike High 703/597-7912.

CC * 33 * MD * 10 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)

The Century Chair, Kent Peters, will join us to check out the route. Call, email, or check the club website for updates. Peter Klosky [pptc@peterklosky.com] C: 703/727-4939.

B * 57-65 * MD * 9:30 AM * Riley's Lock (RIL)
Who Said Matt Does Not Ride outside DC? This ride will bring back memories of rides along time-honored roads past Riley's Lock. For the adventurous, Marlu will be there for the taking. For those looking to omit this thrill, there is a detour to miss it. Either way, there are two rest stops along the route. People who go on this ride are encouraged to ride hard. They also should not be ashamed to socialize and be merry. The ride leader is promising to jump in the water for a swim at the ride's end. All are encouraged to stay for an old-fashioned tailgate at ride's end, featuring beer and authentic Wisconsin brats (with, of course, veggie options). Please bring a dish/ refreshment to share. Matt Birnbaum [noshbygosh@comcast.net] 202/360-3969.

B (MH) * 40/61 * VA * 8:30 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
Middleburg Fox Hunt . This may or may not share roads and rest stops with the BB ride leaving 30 minutes earlier. Hopefully we'll socialize with our faster friends after the ride, if not out on the road. Shorter option in case it's beastly hot. There may be some long stretches between rest stops on the longer ride, so bring your large water bottles. No go in major rain; call ride leader if weather is doubtful. Bill Strong [williamstrongATearthlink.net] C: 202/277-1723.

BB * 46 * MD * 8:30 AM * Gwynn Park HS

BB (MH) * 71 * VA * 8 AM * Middleburg ES (MID)
Middleburg Fox Hunt Extended . Bastille Day Century from the District . A century from the heart of DC? Believe it! Celebrate Bastille Day as we start close to the French Ambassador's residence, pass the French Embassy, and hit all the fun roads out to Poolesville and around Sugarloaf before returning to DC and a well-deserved lunch of French food. The ride leaves early so that we can get back into town in time for lunch. Two or three rest stops along the way to replenish supplies, so that the mood stays jovial (and don't forget your sunscreen, as there are some long, non-shaded sections along the way). Stay tuned to the BikePPTC.org forums and the Google Group for info on post-ride arrangements or cancellations. No go if steady rain, thunderstorms or seriously wet roads; otherwise, we roll. Ride leaves promptly from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. On street parking is available on S St or 23rd St, NW -- please be mindful of posted signs and that this is a residential neighborhood (allow some extra time to find parking and e-mail the ride leader if anyquestions). The Plains, 245, and Hopewell Rd . MOSTLY DOWNHILL AND ALWAYS A TAILWIND. This is a beautiful ride through Virginia horse country. We ride through The Plains with rest stops at 9 and 20 miles, but restrooms may not be available. You will love the route, especially the unpainted country roads. There are quite a few rollers and one longer, gradual ascent just before The Plains, which a "C" rider can conquer with resolve. Total ascent is about 1,700 over 33 miles or 50 per mile. If weather is doubtful, call ride leader NLT 1 hours before ride start. Len Wilkinson (len.wilkinson@verizon.net) 703/455-0368 or C: 703/585-1238.

This ride no longer goes through Arlington. Hey, there are just as many local yokels in Vienna as there are in Arlington to look at, maybe more. We still stop at the Sweet Stuff Pastry Shop and we have found a new place to have an after-ride treat, it just will not be Mom's Place. Riley's Lock Express . Come out and join Alice Bellis for the first ride she's led. We should be done by noon, allowing time for other activities. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart'shorse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. E-mail ride leader for the meaning of God or other answers to great riddles. John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C: 202/441-5625.

BB (MF) * 67 * VA * 8 AM * Warrenton Municipal Lot (WAR)
Kellys Ford Long . A bit of a recovery ride after the Point of Rocks ride on Saturday. I haven't done this ride since last year, but always really enjoy the beautiful riding away down in Rappahannock River country. The stop in Remington for some reason always reminds me that VA is part of the South, even if it doesn't feel like it until you get that far down State. Weather isn't a limitation unless we have a good hurricane season. Rob Barber-Delach C: 703/727-0321.

BB/A * 100 * MD * 8:30 AM * Monocacy MS (MMS)
