August 2007 Ride Schedule

Weekday Rides

August -- Sundays

D/C (MF) * 16 * VA * 11 AM * Shirlington Village, Arlington (SHR)
Lunch in Shirlington . Join us for lunch at one of the many restaurants in Shirlington (free parking in garages and lots on weekends). We meet at 11 AM in front of Best Buns (4010 South 28th Street, Arlington, VA 22206) to select a restaurant, then go to lunch at about 1 PM. See you there!!!! [P.S. Between 11 AM and 1 PM you are welcome to join the Leader on the bike trails of Arlington (the Arlington Loop: traveling first on a portion of the W&OD Trail, then the Custis Trail, the Mount Vernon Trail, and the Four Mile Run Trail) with a rest stop at Starbuck's in Lyon Village, and a brief regrouping at Gravelly Point (cue sheet on PPTC website, and passed out at ride). The 3-4 miles on the Custis Trail are hilly; the rest of the ride is pretty flat. Leader rides a slow C pace; all levels welcome (those wanting more or fewer miles may wish to continue up the W&OD and return to join us for the main event: lunch!). If raining: lunch is at 11 AM; ride is no go. Ron Trueworthy [Ron_Trueworthy@Yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.

August -- Mondays

B(H) * 20 * VA * 6 PM * Barcroft ES
Heavenly Hills of Arlington (reduction) . This is a shortened version of a longer 35 mile ride that cuts off most of the flat part in the front and gets you right into the hills! We will start from the Barcroft ES located at Wakefield St and 6th and 8th Sts off George Mason Dr in the Barcroft Area of Arlington. Due to hills, traffic, and major route crossings (but mostly the hills), ride leader will lead at a slow "B" pace, but all "B" like riders are welcome. The point of the ride is to get in some hills but also have fun and be safe simultaneously. Ride starts in Arlington and travels to McLean and back to Arlington where we gently segue to a couple of flat and downhill "mercy miles" at the end to help loosen the legs...ahhh, heavenly! Cynthia Priddy [diamrem@aol.com] 703/501-8525 or 703/926-2899.

BB * 30ish * MD * 9:30 AM * Glen Echo Park (GLE)
The Usual Weekday Ride From Glen Echo . Moderately hilly ride through Potomac, with a probable stop at a cafe near the end. No go in the rain or on wet roads. Check with leaders if the weather is questionable. Please park in the lower portion of the lot farthest from Macarthur Boulevard. Bob Thompson [bob@farandawaycycling.com] 571/275-2814 and Cathy Wilson [cswilson@aol.com] 703/538-0987.

August -- Tuesdays

CC * 14 * MD * 6 PM * Capital Crescent Trail (CCT)

We go to dinner afterwards at a moderately priced Bethesda restaurant. The ride leaves promptly at 6 PM from the far corner of the parking lot at Woodmont and Bethesda Aves. Bring quarters!! The meter maids are out until 10 PM. No go if it's raining, pavement is wet or storms are seriously threatening. Helmets required. Patrice Coss 703/521-6159 and Polly Choate [scooterpea@yahoo.com] 202/966-5571.

CC/B/BB * 22 * VA * 6:30 PM * Cameron Run Regional Park, Alexandria

We'll ride unless it's raining at start time. (Directions from the Beltway in Virginia: Take Exit 174 to the Eisenhower Ave Connector. R on Eisenhower Ave @ light. L into Cameron Run Park after 0.5 mile.) Please bring your helmets. Dan Stoltz [BikerDan1<>comcast.net] 703/684-5909 and Cynthia Priddy [diamrem<>aol.com] W: 703/926-2899 or 703/501-8525.

B * 15 * MD * 5:30 PM * Colonnades at Kentlands
Kentlands Kaper . We will ride on Quince Orchard Rd, Rt 28 and Seneca Rd for a short stretch. Traffic can be heavy and the shoulder is not wide. I recommend helmet or bike mounted mirrors. Riders can use the bathroom of Gaithersburg Dental Care to change. (Directions: From I-270 take I-370 / Sam Eig Hwy west to a right turn (North) onto Great Seneca Hwy and proceed 2-3 miles. Turn left at Quince Orchard Rd. Make the first left (at Exxon station) which is Booth St. Another quick left at Arch Pl and proceed two blocks to the parking lot. My office is at the corner of Granite and Arch; 8 Granite Pl #22, Gaithersburg, MD 20878. Please use Mapquest as Yahoo or Google don't work for this address. There is a parking lot next to Famous Dave's BBQ.) Call ride leader if in doubt or for directions. B Gerry Chan [GeraldChan@aol.com] 301/977-7777, CC Alice Ogden Bellis [aobellis@comcast.net] C: 202/549-9368.

B(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Bees . This is a complementary ride to the hammerhead A ride below. Ride leader intends to ride the 1st (big) half of the route used by the A riders. Quiet roads, pleasant suburban setting, and an easy return from anywhere on the route make it a good choice for uncertain conditions or times (i.e., being late, or needing an early departure). Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57<>juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.

B/A/AA * 20-30 * DC * 6 PM * Mitchell Park
Downtown Breakaway . Come join us for this urban/suburban adventure! Did you know that you could ride in DC at rush hour and not be in the midst of cars? Come join us for this is a beautiful ride, through the tree-lined streets of NW and out to Potomac. The ride goes up and down many hills between Dupont Circle and Potomac. The return, as the daylight is fading, is flat and fast along MacArthur Blvd. Something for everyone. Plenty of short cuts along the way to finish by dark. Ride leaves promptly from Mitchell Park, S St NW, between 22nd and 23rd Sts. Ride leaders of various speeds will be ready to lead each week according to availability. If you'd like to help lead, please contact one of the leaders. B Liz Milor [lmilor@comcast.net] C:301/367-2430. A/AA Jonathan Mirsky [mirsky2207@hotmail.com] C:202/320-1310; Rudi Riet [rudi@songfta.com] C:860/869-7610; Brian Freburger [freburgerbe@cox.net] C 703/508-0282.

B/BB * 20-25 * MD * 6:10 PM * Layton Village SC (LAV)
Another Weekday Option . Whatever happened to this weekday ride? We will be riding into Howard County via Riggs, Zion, and Howard Chapel roads and coming back via Hipsley Mill Rd. Sorry, no Hawkins Creamery route. There will be multiple lengths options of the same basic route. Cue sheet available at http://home.comcast.net/~g_chan/. No go if raining or wet roads. Geng Chan [gchan@sandglass.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.

A/AA(MF) * 25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . Hard riding in a suburban setting of smooth, quiet roads, staying within 3mi of the park (with ample shortcuts). The plan is that the main group departs at 6:10 PM promptly, as any later riders have an easy intercept path--no matter how late! (E.g., a 6:30 departure should still be able to get 18 mi of riding with group.) Restrooms & live entertainment at the park. Note: some riders might ignore rain to ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns<>yahoo.com] 703/241-9113.

August -- Wednesdays

C (MF) * 17/20 * VA * 6:XX PM * South Run Recreation Center
Alternate Wednesdays in Virginia . Two rides, alternating on Wednesdays, offer C riders and others a chance for evening cycling and socializing. See their particular listings under each Wednesday, below, for details. C. Ya There 703/FOR-BIKE.

B/BB/A * 22-30 * MD * 6:30 PM * Ivy Lane Office Complex (IVY)
Midweek Madcap . Come out and enjoy a mid week ride through the Ag Center and Old Town Bowie. Terrain is flat to rolling. There will be several routes to choose from with no rest stops. Choose the ride/mileage that will ensure that you get back to the ride start before it gets dark. No go in rain/wet roads. Jeanette and Jay Howard [Tucohoward@comcast.net] 240/271-7001.

B/BB/A(MH) * 28 * MD * 6 PM * Sandy Spring Fire Station (near-SES)
Sandy Spring Trainer . Expect a good work-out traversing the many hilly roads of the area. We'll try to hang together (strong riders can repeat part of a climb). Call if the weather's dubious. The Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department Station 4 is located at 17921 Brooke Rd in Sandy Spring, MD 20860 (off of Rt 108 Between Sherwood ES and Sherwood HS). A: Alan Muldawer [Alan AT Muldawer.com] 301/996-2526; BB: Bill Anderson [bjkanderson AT verizon.net] 301/570-7704.

August -- Thursdays

C/CC(MH) * 10-20 * DC * 6:30 PM * Tenley Circle (TEN)
Socially Acceptable! Friendly, social ride through side streets down to the river or into the park and back up the hill to Tenley Circle . Route varies each week. Then on to Armand's for pizza, beer, and salad and more socializing! New people are welcome and will soon be part of the regular group, so come on down and share your experiences! Join the group on the East side of Tenley Circle on Yuma St. Ride leaves promptly, and parking on Yuma is usually no problem. No go if raining or wet roads. Call ride leaders for more info. Get your weekend riding started here! Reggie Beard 240/899-4391 and Steve Brickell 301/946-2520.

B-AA(MF) * 15-25 * VA * 6 PM * Wakefield Park (WKP)
Annandale Evening Speedworks . See the Tuesday write-up for details--more of the same. We aim to roll out at 6:10, but the route stays within 3 miles of the park, so later folks can easily join the group during the ride. Dan Lehman [riDEsigns <> yahoo.com] 703/241-9113. Peg & Bill Morris [PShea57 <> juno.com] PLS/NOT-CALL.

B/BB/A/AA * 18-25 * VA * 6:30 PM * Belle Haven Marina (BEL)
Belle Haven Blast . This long-running and social training ride has a bit of everything. A relatively flat first half that offers a lot of opportunities for serious speed work yields to almost unrelenting hills for the last 10 - 12 miles. The ride usually breaks up into several different groups -- with a punishing pace at the front. But if you can keep a "B" pace, you'll almost certainly find someone to ride with. Brian Dixon [Brian<>popconnect.org] 202/489-5247 and Todd Nedorostek [TNedorostek<>earthlink.net] 571/436-6128.

August -- Fridays

CC * 35 * MD * 10 AM * Buddy Attick Park (BUD)
Weekend Warmup . Take the day off and join us; we have built a nice crew of regulars and irregulars for this casual and true "CC" paced mostly rolling ride with two climbs to keep us honest. And plan on lunch after the ride at Greenbelt Center. NOTE: park in the Buddy Attick parking lot (despite what the ride start description says) and not across the street at Ivy Lane. George Schneider [gbs319@juno.com] and Harold Goldstein [mdbiker@goldray.com] 301/854-0388 or 202/997-2376.

B/CC * 15/18/21/25 * MD * 6:16 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:16 Scenic Social! A slightly earlier start to encourage a social pace...all the better for llamma and cow gazing. This ride rolls from Germantown into Poolesville on lightly traveled roads with green pastures and orchards along the way. Varying route lengths to accommodate many riding abilities and desires. Don't shy away if you can't make the "official" start time; come later and cut the ride short (cue sheet always on ride leader's car), meeting us in the parking lot by dusk to talk about where dinner will be. We meet in the first parking lot on the right on Schaeffer Rd; entrance just prior to the traffic circle is easily missed, so look for it immediately following all the townhouses. No go in inclement weather or on wet roads. There is no sweep because of varying route lengths, but ride leader will make an effort to encourage group togetherness. CC Brenda Ruby C: 301/602-4683, B Willy Alladro [smd03901@allstate.com] 301/467-2600.

A/BB * 25 * MD * 6:30 PM * South Germantown RC (SGR)
6:30 Rural Rumble! Same ride as above with a later start to accommodate (encourage?) the speed demons among you. You know who you are so come and be in your element. A Ken Rowe [investorken@yahoo.com] C: 301/367-2600, BB Bill Hermatch [bhermz@yahoo.com] SND/EEE-MAIL.

August 1 Wednesday

C * 17 (MF) * VA * 6 PM * South Run Recreation Center * 50%
South Run Burke Lake Occoquan Loop . This ride is a pleasant jaunt to Burke Lake along a seclud°ed bike path and the bike path adjacent to Ox Road to Occoquan Regional Park. We then double back and after an energizing climb, we return on neighborhood streets and a secluded bike path along Lake Mercer. The beginning and finishing legs are very peaceful with only the sound of birds and the occasional deer to dodge. (Directions: South Run Rec Center, 7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield. Go through the paved parking lot adjacent to the Rec Center and park in the gravel lot next to the lower field house (now the indoor soccer field; previously the indoor horse arena.) ) If weather is doubtful, call the ride leader to confirm the ride is a go. Jeff Mankie jsmankie@aol.com, 703/497-2368.

August 4 Saturday

PEACH PICKERS' DELIGHT!

Don't miss the this popular event featuring somewhat hilly and wonderfully scenic rides originating from Stribling orchard in Markham, Virginia. Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills, the orchard has rest rooms, water, soft drinks, and homemade pies. For participants opting to bring post-ride lunches or dishes to share, there's a nice picnic spot with several shaded tables atop a hill featuring remarkable views. You can pick or simply purchase delicious tree-ripened peaches. Bring a few dollars for peaches. Bags are provided. All routes have a fair amount of shade. If the forecast calls for temperatures of 94° or higher, rides can be shortened by using cue sheets from the next lower category and abbreviating the "C" route. If rain threatens, call your ride leader. Weather may differ at the orchard, and ride leaders will be checking with the locals. New members and prospective members are most welcome. Please wear a helmet. (Directions: All rides begin at Striblingorchard. Take I-66 west 46 miles beyond the beltway to exit 18 - Markham / Rt 688. From the exit ramp, turn left on Leeds Manor Rd / Rt 688, go under I-66 and continue straight on Rt 688 at stop sign / Rt 55). At T, turn right to remain on Rt 688. The orchard is another 0.3 miles on the left, just past the RR tracks. Parking is on the grass along the dirt road leading into the orchard. Please pull completely off the roadway so other orchard visitors, including occasional trucks and RVs, can get by. Don't leave too much space between cars so everyone can fit. And avoid parking in the area nearest the store, as regular orchard customers must be accommodated. If the primary parking space is full, inquire about overflow parking at the orchard store.) Sim Hall 703/847-0734.

C(H) * 34 * VA * 9:30 AM * Stribling orchard in Markham
Peach Pickers' Delight! . Are spectacular views and succulent tree-ripened peaches worth riding up a few hills? If so, please join us for this mid-summer treat. We'll have just a single rest stop at Orlean market (mile 16), so bring plenty of water. This is great ride for new members looking to experience some of the best bike roads in the region. If a high temperature of 94° or more is predicted, the route can be shortened by about five miles. See event overview for directions and more details. Bob Downs [rwd@bskb.com 703/615-3702.

CC (1/2 H) * 48 * VA * 9:15 AM * Stribling orchard in Markham
Peach Pickers' Delight! . We'll venture into the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, the relatively easy way, via Manassas gap. Our somewhat hilly ride up the valley features panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Tour the historic mill or feed the golden trout at our first rest stop in Millwood (mile 21). Don't miss the waterfall (mile 25). The return route periodically follows the cool banks of the meandering Shenandoah River. Our second rest stop is at a country store (mile 34). See event overview for directions and more details. Sim Hall 703/847-0734.

B(H) * 62 * VA * 9 AM * Stribling orchard in Markham
Peach Pickers' Delight! . Explore incredible Shenandoah Valley roads rarely used on club rides. The mostly rolling terrain includes four or five substantial climbs and a couple of long flat stretches. After taking 688 from the orchard to Paris we'll cross into the Shenandoah Valley on route 50 and head north along the tree-lined riverbank for several miles. Our first rest stop will be at mile 24. Spectacular Blue Ridge vistas abound as we turn south, passing through Millwood. Following another nice stretch along the Shenandoah River we'll have a second rest stop at mile 45 before returning to the orchard via easier Manassas Gap. Although considerable shade along the route mitigates the expected heat, you may want an extra water bottle. Awe-inspiring scenery, extensive river rambles and luscious peaches make this ride truly memorable. See event overview for directions. John Lynn 703/528-1611.

BB (MH) * 66 * VA * 8:30 AM * Stribling orchard in Markham
Peach Pickers' Delight! . (A/AA riders should stay tuned to the e-waves on the hope that by ride time there will be a leader found for an 8:45 AM start, with maybe a challenging climb option on the third leg.) This ride offers considerable variety, awesome scenery, some little used roads, and fresh-baked pies. We'll basicly follow the "B" route into the Shenandoah Valley, with the added challenge of an extra four-mile loop (including a significant hill) bypassing Millwood. Rest stops are available at miles 24 and 49. Most of the climbing occurs in the initial, cooler half of the ride, and the final few miles along Rt 55 through Linden encourage a fast finish. See event overview for directions and B ride description for more route details. Claude Cavender [CCavender<>cox.net] -- before 10 PM -- 703/255-7096.

Now of my three score years, not ten, Twenty will not come again. And take from fifty springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. Don't you just love the passing of time on two wheels. Bikers love to say four wheels moves your body but two wheels moves your soul. John Wannen, john@wannen.com C: 202/441-5625.

CC * 33 * MD * 9 AM * Rileys Lock (RIL)

BB/A(H) * 72 * MD * 8:30 AM * Catoctin HS (CAT)
Battle Around Camp David . It's time to try something new! This cue sheet was in the library and I've never been on it, but it sounds like fun. Allow a little extra time to get to the starting location since it is North of Frederick. The cue sheet says the 72 mile version has 6,780 feet of climbing which means we should be prepared to get some hill work in. Bring plenty of liquids to help beat the heat. One full rest stop, with several other less featured facilities along the way. No go in rain. Kevin Smith [ksmith9296@aol.com] 301/977-8535.

August 5 Sunday

TANDEM * 39/46 * VA * 8 AM * Tyler ES (TYL) * 90°/50%
Middleburg Non-Express . This ride features a good climb as it crosses over Bull Run Mountain, then climbs and dives and winds its way through the horse country of Fauquier County to Middleburg. The ride leader will be stopping at his favorite bakery in Middleburg for a slice of pie and a drink before continuing around through Marshall and returning to Gainesville via The Plains. For those who desire it, the longer route offers some gratuitous mileage, but you don't have to make the decision until the 25 mile mark. No go if the chance of rain is over 50% or the forecast high for the day is over 95ø. We're making an early start to beat the heat if we can. When in doubt call. Between The Rivers . The largest cavalry battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Brandy Station, occurred on June 9, 1863 and involved nearly 17,000 horsemen under Confederate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and Union Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton. Amid rumors of a possible major Confederate offensive, Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker (famous for "Hooker's Girls" and you know the rest of the story), commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, assigned a reconnaissance-in-force to Pleasonton's 11,000 man cavalry. Though the Confederates could claim the victory, the Battle of Brandy Station, remarked one Confederate, "made the Federal cavalry." Along with this new-found confidence, Union horsemen discovered the position of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederates were slipping west, to the Shenandoah Valley on Lee's last great offensive, which would end a month later at Gettysburg. You're going to like this ride and six miles before the end we stop for lunch at the Inn at Kelly's Ford. The Pelham's (Maj. John Pelham commander of Stuart's horse artillery) Pub downstairs invites us with outdoor seating and a grand vista of an equestrian meadow. Sympathizers of all causes welcome. E-mail ride leader for the meaning of God or other answers to great riddles. John Wannen [john@wannen.com] C: 202/441-5625.

Return to Galesville . I led this ride 2 years ago and got a positive response from all riders. Route is familiar one to Galesville, but starting from Staples Corner (MD 450 & MD 424), which is 3 miles west of Davidsonville P&R. Roads are nearly all back country, some rolling hills with stop at West River Market and waterfront park in Galesville. Caution on steep winding downhill on St. George Barber Rd. Possible post ride lunch at a new Mexican restaurant. Jerry Collins 301/641-3415.

B (MH) * 42 * MD * 7 AM * Sherwood ES (SES)

Come on out and enjoy the ride AND the rest of the day. "BB"s and "CC"s who are looking for an early ride and don't need a formal leader are welcome too. Shirlington Social . Years ago there was a weekly ride out of Shirlington. The idea is being resurrected every other Wednesday and on Sunday (see weekly ride listing). The ride takes you on the local bike trails of Arlington and Alexandria and is enjoyed by all levels. After the ride, plan on socializing at one of the local dining establishments. Riders should meet and gather in front of Best Buns on South 28th Rd. Call ride leader if weather looks doubtful -- no go if raining. Teresa Noonan [teresanoonan@hotmail.com] 703/379-8490.

August 11 Saturday

FAMILY/TANDEM (MH) * 11-26 * MDDC * 11:30 AM * Rock Creek Parking Lot
Family Ride . Mostly on the closed section of Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park. We will climb a moderate hill (which might considered steep by family standards), and is open to light traffic, to the Nature Center for a picnic snack (bring your own - no food available). Hopefully we can then catch the free 1pm planetarium show. After biking back to our cars, there is the option to add another 15 miles or so on the open-to-cars section of Beach Dr and Jones Mill Rd. My 5 yr old daughter and I will be riding on our tandem - other tandems are welcome! (Directions: From the Beltway / I-495 in MD, take Connecticut Ave / Rt 185 South for about 1.25 miles and turn left/east on East-West Highway / Rt 410. Go about 3/4 mile and make a right on Beach Dr. Take Beach Dr until it dead-ends (on the weekends) at a gate and parking in the lot on the left. Zap the Gap (Extended) . A really fun route that isn't led nearly enough. It goes through beautiful country with vineyards, farms, horses, and orchards. All that hard work at the beginning makes for a fantastic finish on 55, with more than a couple of long downhill spins. The ride is similar to the "Stormin' the Gap" ride (63) in Scott and Jim's Favorite Bike Rides (except the extensions, by Bill Strong, are more interesting). There are several variants to suit your distance goals or whims. Cue sheets (with directions to ride start) and some photos are posted on the PPTC Web at_http://www.bikepptc.org/node/712_(http://www.bikepptc.org/node/712) (longer versions and photos) and http://www.bikepptc.org/node/726_ (http://www.bikepptc.org/node/726) (shorter versions). Mudd Ride . Do you know where the phrase "My name is Mudd comes from?" Well, today you will find out! Let's take a ride out to Dr. Mudd's house and you'll see where it all happened. This is a classic ride for Oxon Hill Bike Club. It is a nice cruise. Not too far as it could be a hot day, we'll start on the early side to try to beat any heat. (Directions: From Beltway I-95 take Exit 7-A / Rt 5 south and go 9 miles to Brandywine Rd / Rt 381. Turn left and go 0.3 mile to Brandywine Rd entrance to the school. Black Rock Rising . Another early start to get the miles in before the day heats up and the lawn needs mowing. We've got a grand tour of Montgomery County's Agricultural Reserve in mind with a rest stop in Dickerson. Plenty of shade, a few hills and we end on an "up" note on Black Rock Rd back up to SGR. Olney Country Roads . Repeat of a favorite! Here is a chance for slower riders to finish ahead of faster riders on the same route. Everyone rides the first 11 miles to the country store in Sunshine (rest stop) and the last half of the short ride back to the ride start. At the country store, riders can decide to bike all or part of a 14 miles middle segment in a very scenic area of Montgomery and Howard Counties. The ride leader will do the full 36 miles. He'll ride a leisurely pace at the rear of the group and leave no one behind. Lunch is at the Olney Ale House near the finish. (Directions: From the Beltway, drive north on either Georgia Avenue / Rt 97 or Connecticut Ave / Rt 185. After Connecticut Ave intersects with Georgia Ave, drive north on Georgia Ave / Rt 97 past the 20-foot-high world globe at Leisure World. Harpers Ferry . This ride will make a good TRAINING RIDE FOR THE CENTURY. A couple of CC riders tagged along with the BBs earlier in the year and reported back that this was a great ride. The ride leader is training for a week of biking in early September in the Sierra Mountains of California. Come along and help out. Regarding the early ride start: some riders grumbled in July when we started a ride at 8 AM, but then said at the end that they really appreciated it. The Hills of Ellicott City . So you think you can handle hills. These hills run the gamut from short and steep to long and not quite as steep. A fairly easy ride from Savage to Ellicott City and then we will do the loops including the seven hills of Ellicott City. As a bonus, the longer ride goes from the foot of Illchester Rd on the Grist Mill Trail to Gun Rd. Which way we go on Illchester Rd will depend upon how sadistic I am while developing the route which was last done in 2005. The 37 mile route in 2005 had 3,000 ft of climbing while a different 60 mile route had 5,000 ft of climbing. The mileages in the header line are approximate. Boyce 'N Berryville . The Boyce/Berryville ride goes through beautiful rural areas familiar to Club riders. By virtue of the nature of the topography and the roads, the ride is a relatively fast one through rolling, and later, quite hilly terrain, looping through West Virginia back to Berryville and Boyce. Riders should be aware that there are few viable routes to shorten the 42 mile distance and in August the heat and humidity are definite considerations: much of the ride is in full sun with few shady spots. Please plan to hydrate accordingly, as well as consider the pace and distance requirements for this loop in Clarke County . The ride will occur at ALL temperature levels, but won't go in rain. (Directions: I-66 west from Beltway about 40 miles to exit Rt 17 / Delaplane (after Marshall); L (west) @ T on Rt 50 west for 9 miles; at first TL (Sheetz, potties), R on Rt 340 for a few miles into Boyce; L at blinking light onto Rt 723; L in 0.2 miles into the school parking lot.) Unpainted Country Lanes . MOSTLY FLAT WITH A COOLING TAILWIND. The intention is to avoid roads with paint on them, and the design does an excellent job of it. To accomplish this, the route twists around country lanes like a calender full of over-cooked spaghetti. And yet, there are plenty of long, uninterrupted stretches. Traffic is minimal and the route hardly has hills, but there are one or two rises here and there. The ride starts at Brentsville Courthouse Historical Park, which is worth a trip in its own right. It features six notable buildings: the courthouse, the jail, a one-room schoolhouse, the old Union Church, a wood cabin, and a wood-framed smokehouse. The courthouse and jail were built next to each other circa 1822. The jail is a two-story gable roof structure, and the one-room schoolhouse - built around 1928 - is one of the few if not the only remaining one-room schoolhouses in Prince William County . I will bring a light picnic, and I hope you will bring picnic fare for after the ride. Total ascent is only1,000 feet over 33 miles or a very reasonable 30 feet per mile. Plan on no restroom facilities at ride start. But through the kindness of the superintendent, the park facilities might open early just for PPTC. One rest stop at mile 14 in Nokesville Park - no snacks; some water. (Directions: Brentsville Park, 12291 Bristow Rd, Bristow, VA 20136, immediately adjacent to the Presbyterian Church on Bristow Rd in Brentsville.
