Wheel Failure

I brought my KLEIN Bicycle to Spokes, Inc for routine maintenance (new chain and freewheel). The mechanic called me to say that there were cracks in the rear wheel around the nipple holes and that the wheel should be replaced. The bike is 4 years old, but the warranty was still in effect for the wheels. TREK who owns KLEIN sent a new wheel set (front and rear) to Spokes, Inc at no charge. The wheels were BONTRAGER RACE. Recommend that you examine your wheel set for possible cracks. This will prevent a possible wheel failure that could have major consequences.

Bontrager Race -- Not Always a Problem

My Trek 5200 with these wheels has about 8500 miles on it, and the rims look very sound. Knock on wood, maybe they'll stay that way?

Wheel Failure too

My Bontrager Race rear wheel also failed after less than 5 thousand miles. I was given a used wheel of the same model even though it was under warranty. This for a Trek 5200 purchased at Revolution Cycles, Rockville. - Kent

Wheel Failure, also

I, too, had a wheel failure with the Bontrager Race. Same problem - tiny cracks around the nipple and rim. I identified this problem because there was a "tinkling" noise when I rode. Trek and The Bicycle Lane replaced the wheels without hassle. However, watch out for a catastrophic failure!
