The 7th Annual Family weekend is a family/child-focused weekend with fun rides (approx. 20 miles on quiet back roads), lots of stops, fun destinations, and affordable accommodations. Once again our headquarters for the weekend will be Pocomoke State Park/Shad Landing near Snow Hill, about 20 miles southeast of Salisbury, MD. This year the event will be held the 20-22 of June.
This is a low cost, cooperative weekend. Camping Loop D also known as Robin’s Nest has standard campsites for tents and campers and 8 camping cabins. The cost for a cabin is app $55 per night and generally includes 1 double bed and 1 set of bunk beds for a family of 4. (Some cabins vary in sleeping arrangements so ask when registering.) The Campsites are $25 per night. There is no electricity at the camping sites, but there is in the cabins. There is a bathhouse with running water and free hot showers located in the camping loop. Each participating family will be responsible for making their own reservations. We recommend that participants to get as close to campsite 182 as possible. Campsite 182 will be the area where most of the cooking, eating and activities occur. Cabins are often in demand so reserve early. For more information click here.
All meals are communal, with all participants offering to bring specific items. These will be coordinated once it is known who is attending.
In addition to cycling, Pocomoke State Park has a pool, a Nature Center, playing fields and canoe rentals. In the past, the Park has had an evening Fur, Fin and Feather’s show by the resident naturalist, showcasing some of the wildlife of the area. We will be having the obligatory campfire with s’mores, weather permitting. In case of serious rainouts, the Wallops Island NSA visitor center is located about 20 miles south, the Salisbury Zoo is about 20 miles east, and the Virginia and Maryland access points to Assateague Island and the ponies are about 25 miles away.
Ride possibilities include Furnace Town, which is a historic restored colonial village and Public Landing Park on the Chincoteague Bay. Hopefully we will be coming up with more options.
Registration cost for each family is $25 for PPTC members and $30 for non-PPTC members. Food and camping fees are dependent upon menu planning and accommodations used.
