Bike Maintenance Workshops in Downtown D.C.
Long-time D.C.-area resident and bike shop owner, Neil Conway, will teach club members the basics of bicycle repair and maintenance at his Foggy Bottom-based, District Hardware and Bike Shop at 1108 24th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037. A $5 donation for each seminar will be collected for PPTC. Participants are invited (but will not be required) to bring a bike.
Monday, May 12, 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Flat Fixing and What Kind of Wheel is That Anyway?
Neil will teach us how to address the most basic of cycling mishaps, the flat. He also will address the difference between 27”, 26”, 700c and 650c wheels and tubular and clincher tires. Finally, he will cover the basics of truing, and depending upon interest, may offer to hold a truing clinic at a later date.
Monday, June 9, 7 – 8:30 p.m.
Derailleurs and Drive Trains, and the Purpose Behind All Those Little Screws
In this seminar, Neil will cover derailleur adjustment and drive train maintenance. He also will explain the derailleur’s dazzling assembly of screws, cogs and pulleys, and, if time allows, will cover chain repair and replacement. As of this writing, the shop has only two repair stands. The club is working on providing others. However, participants are encouraged to borrow stands or bring their own.
