DC Rides

Just out of curiosity, will the club be concentrating on more DC centralized rides this year? The only rides out/in DC that I have seen are the Tuesday night ride and a casual route on Thursdays. DC is a great starting point for numerous rides and may be a great angle to attract more riders to the club. Not trying to start a flame war here, however it's a bit frustrating to pay dues each year for a club that only features weekend rides hours outside of the city. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

what they said...but

But leading rides does more than get you the ride you want. It helps you make cycling friends. At the ride start everyone will talk to you to pick up the cue sheet. At the end of the ride everyone (almost) will thank you for leading. They will probably look for you at the rest stop. It is SOOO much better than being one of a dozen plus riders stretched out across the hills with no company and little socializing at the rest stop or ride's end. If you are a social butterfly or don't want to talk to people you ride with, then this benefit goes out the window.

I led some rides last spring from the city and once in the summer at least. Typically no one turned out or maybe one other rider. It may be that the BB pace is the wrong one for weekend DC ride starts. I used to think that Point of Rocks was an insane ride start. I went once and I've been hooked ever since.

Although it is out of the city, Allen Pond Park is only about 25 minutes east on Rt.50. That gets you less trafficked roads and not too far away, plus the trip back in is not congested like Rt.66. Another almost in the city start which can spare people some travel time on McArthur Blvd. is Glen Echo Park. There are rides from the city (already cued) that can get you 32-108 miles of riding. I think Eric has a 200 mile cue sheet from Hains Point to High Rock, Pennsylvania.

The main thing you need as a ride leader is confidence in your ability to handle your own mechanical problems. In case you get dropped. But as a leader you may have more people looking out for you than otherwise. If you don't make the route up yourself from your own knowledge, you will want to test the route, either on a bike or in a car to make sure you can follow the directions and to be able to improve them if you found something unclear.

What they said ... but

Well said Mark. For a few summers now I have co-led early ride starts in summer to beat the heat. It really filled a niche and there was a core of regulars who really loved the early start. People were super appreciative and became good friends. I think a well thought out DC ride start could fill a similar void.

Thanks for all the comments

Thanks for all the comments gang. I'll be sure to review a few routes I have in mind (mostly stolen from bike shops and friends) and see if I can put something together. I know Rudi, John, Liz, and Mark lead the Tuesday night ride quite frequently, so I'll be sure to touch base with them as well. I will also reach out to Cahterine to discuss options for some routes. Thanks all!!

DC Rides

Best way to solve this problem is to to become a ride leader and have your rides start in DC.

DC Rides

I second that solution! Rides, ride starts, etc. are all member-determined - if you want it, make it happen - I assure you no one will stand in your way! If you need help figuring out how to get started please feel free to contact me at ckitchell@comcast.net and I can help you design a ride description, etc.

DC Rides

I am sure there is interest, but to reinforce Catherine's comment: The Club does not organize the rides; the Club facilitiate and helps publicize the rides its members volunteer to lead. I think there would be substantial support for more rides with DC starts and all it takes to make it happen is for you (or someone) to step up and lead the ride. I will also offer to help design routes, set up the description and put you in touch with the relevant ride coordinator to get on the ride schedule. Leading a ride is really easy and very rewarding. The best part is, you are guaranteed to do the ride you want to do, becuase you are the one who sets it up! epilsk@gmail.com
