Here are two ideas for Forum categories:
1. PPTC Rides - Use to discuss what rides are going depending on the weather, how they went, etc.
2. Prospective Members - Allow questions from prospective members. Have this forum available to prospective members. Leave the other ones locked up, if needed.

Forum Ideas
I think that when someone wants to reply to a particular item in the forum, the Subject line should default to whatever the subject was to which they are replying. For example, I am replying to an item titled "Forum Ideas" but I had to type "Forum Ideas" into the subject line [which was blank]. I think it's good to allow people to change the subject line if they want, but it's very nice to have the subject line automatically filled in.

Potential members and
Potential members and members of the general public can contact PPTC by using the "contact us" button in the lower left hand side of the website. Approximately 5 or so people a week do use the button and I answer the questions.
Forum useability
Generally - if this is to be our primary mode of comms for everything from selling off surplus gear to cancelling / running rides, it needs to be a lot closer to the top, more obvious and faster to access.
Next - the "Join PPTC" button. Any buttons that offer info to the first time visitor, or allow them to give money to the club should be big, bold and immediately obvious - not down the bottom of a long list of equally sized and coloured buttons. This is a short attention span world - looking for buttons takes far too long for the flutterbys of today.
